6 female Kenya celebrity journalists born of mixed descent

They are adored on TV, a sight to behold on our screens, you can almost tell when they have had a rough day from a good day. Journalists are best known for their personality on the screens but little about their background is told.

Our local TV stations house a diverse team of professionals, some locally-made, a section from our neighboring countries who found a home in Kenya but others are actually from overseas heritage.

Meet the team:

1. Victoria Rubadiri

Despite her modesty, her tranquility, her subtly deep voice and ravishing beauty, Victoria Rubadiri’s background trickles down to several countries.

Her mom, who she is a complete replica of, is a mix of Maasai and Kalenjin while her dad is Malawian. Vicky’s granddad was half-Kalenjin and half Scottish while her grandmother is Kikuyu, Maasai and Seychelloise.

2. Maalika Kazia

Young, ambitious and hardworking, a dear Maalika Kazia stars on KTN News as business host for her show The Trading Bell.

She has an impressive, welcoming smile, her natural hair and striking beauty that would make you mistake her for a runway model. Little is known about her origin but she is of Asian descent.

3. Olive Burrows

First let me introduce her formal names Olive Kalekye Burrows. Yes, the voice behind our NTV screens is an only child born to a Kamba mother and a Kenyan dad who was born to a British father and a Tanzanian mother.

4. Smriti Vidyarthi

Known as the subtle NTV journalist whose love for nature bagged her the Wild Talk show. Soft-spoken and a serious-faced individual on the screen.

The NTV prime time news anchor was born to parents of Indian descent. Her granddad was renowned journalist Girdhari Lal Vidyarthi.

5. Julie Gichuru

Julie Gathoni Sumira Gichuru, is a seasoned journalist and media personality of mixed origin; her dad haiing from a state in northern India and her mom a Kikuyu from Kiambu region.

She is also an entrepreneur and professional criminal lawyer from University of Wales, Cardiff.

6. Lulu Hassan

Lulu Hassan is the first born in a family of three girls, born and bred in Kenya’s coast, Mombasa.

Known for her Swahili prowess on our TV screens, Lulu was born to a Kikuyu mother and Seychellois father.

Otile Brown was probably one of the most decently dressed secular artists in the country until he decided to go extra on his hair.

The brown-skin lad known for his Swahili romantic ballads must have been hit hard by the pandemic if his recent hairstyle is anything to serve.

He put on locks and clean shaved the sides, basically a Mohawk-look depending on how he sets them.

The first day, things were fine, they were neatly held back so there wasn’t much to say about it.

2nd day, 3rd day, it was a pass until a recent video of him driving on the streets, locks loose and this guy looks crazy. Probably bush-y is the word – just saying.

Anerlisa Muigai on the receiving end after unveiling new project

After her eventful weight loss journey, Keroche’s own Anerlisa Muigai has revealed plans to start her own fashion company.

Ms Muigai who is in the thick of a rocky marriage to Tanzanian music star, Ben Pol has had a rough time trying to accept herself in her own skin and believes it is time to equally support women going through the same.

The curvy lass has since worked her way up to achieve that ‘perfect’ body, with her wasp-like waist and hippy edges worth dying for.

Despite being CEO of Nero Company, Anerlisa keeps her dreams burning this time, going into fashion and targeting to start her own clothing line.

When asked, she says it will focus on making women feel confident in their own skin.

Unfortunately, knowing her economic background and social circles, fans are worried that her business does not target just any woman but the high and mighty.

According to masses, their only hope is that the prizes will be affordable in the first place otherwise, she might loose a fair share of her fans.

A section actually believes she is smart at her marketing in that; the company is already up and running, she just needed to make her fans feel part of the decision-making. Boom!

Celestine Ndinda is probably a storm we never saw coming. Pretty humbled and a down-to-earth wife and mom.

Addressed by many as Wakavinye, Mrs Njugush has never cared much about how she looks or which fashion trends she needs to chase after, as long as she is comfortable in what she wears, then that will carry the day.

We have seen here more often stepping out in those loose deras and baggy shirts paired with loose trousers but what many did not know is that when she decides, she can bring out the curvy girl from within.

Corazon Kwamboka is back on social media after taking a weeks break to focus on her new born son, Taiyari.

From the look of things, the new mum is definitely having an easier compared to most new mums; but hey, with money anything is possible, right?

The loss of a brother hit a different spot for Citizen TV’s Linus Kaikai who lost his brother Maurice Kaikai ole Kaikai on Sunday, August 9.

Maurice was working as County Attorney for Kajiado before his untimely death while receiving treatment at Kenyatta University Training and Referral Hospital.

Born in a family of 11 children, with the most popular Linus Kaikai known for his career in the media.

Linus who broke the news to netizens on the fateful day has given his last words to a fallen brother, penning:

A brother he cherished, adored and who went ahead of him admitting it was going to take forever to come to terms with his untimely death.

As seen from his obituary, Maurice married Winfred Imaana Kaikai with whom he bore two children; Kilian Mayiana and Aidan Meliyio.

Maurice is set to be laid to rest Thursday, August 13, at his home in Osinoni village, Transmara Sub-county in Narok County.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Jeff Koinange officially resumes duty after 3-week absence (Video)

Jeff Koinange tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday, July 20, asymptomatic but away from work forcing him to self-isolate at home until further notice.

For the first JKL on that Wednesday, he was turned into a guest in his own show while his colleague, Victoria Rubadiri took over.

He was the one to tell us what has been happening, how he has been feeling and how he is coping with his condition.

That came and went. Following Wednesday, July 29, it is not until the 9pm news when we heard his voice and we were utterly shaken. We were like, is this virus a joke or what exactly is it?

Only for it to turn out he was doing a home edition of his own show. Had everything set prior to and took up the show running. Same case as his Aug 5, JKL show that saw him do it from the comfort of his home library.

However, the following morning his second round of Covid-19 results came out and he tested negative – 17 days after he tested positive for the virus and he could not believe he had just beaten what he called “a monster”.

Couple of days later and he is back on set, Live, co-hosting the 6 am- 10 am breakfast show on Hot 96 with Professor Hamo; shaking hands, all excited and prepping up for the session.

Jeff however seemed a little beat weak and worn out from the virus as he announced:

Well, that means he will be hosting tonight’s JKL show from the Citizen studios, where he last stood roughly 3 weeks ago. Let’s wait and see.

But either way, we are glad he overcame the battle.

Wema Sepetu not only as money but fame and everything else that comes with it. However, the only thing that continues holding her back from her true happiness is childlessness.

Yes, Miss Sepetu had 2 abortions when she was still young; a choice that continues to hurt her each and everyday now that she cannot conceive! In an interview done a while back, Sepetu opened up about her abortions and how Kanumba warned her against them. The actress opened up saying;

He told me I owe him, he told me I will not get babies with anyone else because he was the father of my babies. He told me I owe him two babies. This is because I had terminated two of his pregnancies. Every time we used to meet he would remind me that I owe him. I saw him on Wednesday and I heard he was dead on Thursday.

Regrets

Seeing how things have turned out years later, Wema says she now regrets the decisions she made back then. If she could, Wema says she would turn back the hands of time to correct her mistakes.

In a recent interview with Clouds FM, Wema once again opened up about her childlessness, weight gain and hope of conceiving in the near future. Although it may seem impossible right now, Wema went on to say;

Bahati and Diana Marua were off on a short vacation in Malindi, before tables turned in the deep of the Indian Ocean.

The couple who had made their trip to the Coastal hub for a Shamba project, spent several days and nights touring the place before a visit to the Indian Ocean.

Accompanied by one of Diana’s close friends, Shicco the pair enjoyed their sunny afternoon even though Bahati had grown tired of his wife’s unreasonable demands.

The weather started changing, a strong cold breeze blowing but he sacrificed just to see his wife happy.

Then came the downpour amidst their boat ride to the other side of the ocean where they had scheduled to have their lunch. Either way, they held on, enjoyed some barbecue seafood before the trip back to their apartment.

They left in their small boat only for the weather to drastically change amid deep sea, strong ocean tides that threatened the lives of those aboard and Bahati immediately reacted.

Diana manned up and consoled her sickly husband but sea sickness saw him throwing up several times and the situation became overwhelming for Marua.

Unknown to Vera and to his baby mama, Calisah was but playing the two.

At the time, I was living with my baby mama. I lied to her I was going to Arusha to shoot a video and I took a flight to Nairobi where I spent with Vera. My baby mama used to call me a lot but I didn’t pick the calls, I would hang up and go to the toilet to talk to her. All the time my phone on ‘no disturb’, it was so hard.

Unfortunately, their cover was blown and things became tough for the light skin lad.

I didn’t want the relationship with Vera out and when the photos were released, it went viral. The photos leaked while I was still in Nairobi. We had an argument but my baby mama is understanding.

Eventually it struck Calisah that he was hurting his baby mama and their kid and opted to return to her, leaving Vera out to dry.

I didn’t value Vee more than the woman I have a kid with. I understood I’m a father and I was hurting someone, I went back to Tanzania, that’s when we had issues in the relationship and I ended it.

Betty Kyallo’s daughter recently celebarted her 6th birthday; and yes, we also can’t believe how time flies so fast when we are not watching!

At 6 years, of course Ivanna continues to change both physically and mentally. From the few videos shared by her mummy BK we understand that Ivanna is one smart baby who definitely got her brains from her parents.

Looking at her photos, it’s also obvious to see that she may have inherited most of her looks from her grandmother (BK’s mum).

Not just the serious facial expression but her calmness; and physical appearance prove that BK’s family genes highly came through when she conceived Ivanna.

Being a Wednesday of course we choose to celebrate the adorable baby girl who continues to entertain through her social media pages.

We also want to acknowledge the fact that she is a fighter who overcame a rare autoimmune disease acute disseminated encephalomyelitis; that was marked by a sudden widespread attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord.

She however recovered and continues to make her parents proud with her funny character that probably earned her the name ‘Ivanna the entertainer’ on social media.

The young girl has also managed to bring her parents back together, even though it means co parenting since Okari already moved on!

According to Kenyans, Wangechi did not have to congratulate the pair so publicly if at all she was genuine.

Thirdly, Kenyans did not understand why Wangechi was in support of a marriage that had broken other marriages for the pair to come together.

The BBC didn’t allow me, an actual black man, to use the N-word in an article when quoting an African American who used it.

This was after the BBC boss, Tony Hall recently apologized for a news report from their end containing racial slur that was broadcast and ended up offensive.

End of June 2020, Mediamax employees could only cry foul after the corporate swept clean its entire newsroom team, from editors, to reporters, to news anchors…they were all shown the door.

This is after the media house’s previous mass firing in late October 2019 with a solid 160 editorial staff asked to exit and at least 10 editors affected, citing hard economic times.

Divulging finer details to a local publication, Frank revealed he was now Communications and Public Relations Officer at Kiambu County Government, a role he landed barely 2 weeks ago.

RIP! Popular Kenyan DJ dies in tragic road accident

A Monday morning car accident claimed the life of one of Kenya’s most celebrated DJ who died on the spot.

Kenyans are still in shock, trying to come to terms with the every-day accidents, just a few days after we witnessed the grisly road accident of popular Kikuyu gospel artist Dennis Mutara who survived.

This time round, luck was not on our side, we lost the creative.

Nyeri-based virtual deejay Dunny Boy breathed his last on Monday after the Toyota Fielder he was travelling in lost control and veered off the road before rolling several times into a ditch.

This left the car in total wreck, entangling the DJ in its broken parts that saw police and residents struggle to get the lifeless body out.

Ever since King Kaka’s wife, Nana Owiti landed a job at Switch TV, she has been serving us some body goals, making bold statements with her fashion trends.

The Kamba beauty’s humility, natural curves and enchanting smile are undeniably ones to thirst over, one not known to stir controversy despite her man’s public image.

Taking a break over the weekend, the TV personality travelled home to Kamba land, paying a visit to her great grandma with memories of her childhood days still alive.

However, things took a different turn after the young fishermen could not help but drool over the Kamba doll from Nairobi – probably even not aware of her fame – but they could tell she was a fine goddess.

One of them openly yet boldly affirmed to King Kaka’s wife that he will marry her, take care for her and grow a family of at least 12 children together.

Shocked by the candidness and self-confidence this man had, Nana could only stare and give that smile to show just how impressed his confession had made her.

She however went ahead to reveal she is a married woman therefore such possibilities would be like crying over spilt milk but the man straight up replied:

After 7 years of battling childlessness, Kambua’s miracle baby is finally one year old and the gospel beauty could not help but gush over him.

August 10, remains a day engraved in Kambua and her hubby, Jacskon Mathu’s lives – a day that God took away the pain, the embarrassment, the despair and finally answered their prayers.

Baby Nathaniel Muhoro Mathu warmed his mom’s heart, brought life to their home and proved that God’s timing is the best.

Then the breastfeeding journey was an everyday tale for the young mum.

Then came the baby’s name reveal – Nathaniel Muhoro – with photos of Kambua’s baby shower that we never got a sight of until months later.

Eventually, Parents Magazine allowed us a glimpse of the baby boy’s height and a rough idea of what kind of personality traits he might have and that was enough at the time.

These were signs that we’re getting there with warm mum-son photos grabbing onto each other, giving us baby fever.

Since then, patience and hope has put us together and eventually, recent events are showing a good sign that it is probably time baby Nate was showcased to the world.

This past weekend Jaguar decided to give fans a reason to talk and what best way than to wish his alleged Tanzanian son a happy birthday!

Well, just like Diamond Platnumz the Kenyan politician sent out a heartfelt message dedicated to baby Daylan! Of course Jaguar knew this would make him trend one way or another and I guess this how we also got our story.

Back in 2017 when Dylan was born, many went on to claim that he shared striking resemblance with Jaguar and not Diamond Platnumz. Many could have sworn that the baby boy was indeed Jaguar’s but with time he slowly started looking more like his daddy; but a little more light skinned!

Fans in the comment section could however not let this go as they trolled both Jaguar and Diamond Platnumz for allegedly having an interest in the same woman. But, truth is we really can’t pin Jaguar to Mobetto as they have never been spotted together whether in public or private.

However like they say, Nairobi is one big bedroom with untold stories that would definitely shock the life out of you!
