Eric Omondi has sparked renewed online debate after reportedly issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to nominated Senator Karen Nyamu, demanding that she apologise to a student she allegedly mocked and help support the girl’s education.
Omondi, who is widely known for his philanthropic campaigns and outspoken activism, is said to have made the remarks following mounting criticism directed at Nyamu over comments linked to a female student who had visited Parliament as part of an educational programme.
“It will not be business as usual,” the comedian reportedly stated in a message that has since circulated widely on social media.
Backlash over Senate remarks
The controversy began after Nyamu faced public criticism for remarks she allegedly made about the young student during a Senate-related event.
Many Kenyans online condemned the comments, accusing the senator of humiliating the learner and failing to uphold the decorum expected of a public official.
Following the uproar, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi directed Nyamu to issue a formal apology to the student, her family, the Senate, and the public.
Nyamu later apologised on the Senate floor, stating that she had complied with parliamentary procedures and admitting that her remarks did not meet the standards expected of her office.
Calls for further action
Omondi’s reported intervention has added to growing calls from members of the public and civil society figures demanding accountability beyond a verbal apology.
In statements shared online, the comedian is said to have urged Nyamu to take practical steps, including offering educational support to the affected student, arguing that words alone were insufficient.
“An apology must be followed by action,” Omondi was quoted as saying in posts widely shared across social media platforms.
