There’s More to Nyeri Than Meets the (Beating)

Nyeri county has consistently featured in the news lately for (mostly) the wrong reasons and particularly for its women, who are consistently accused of making mince of their spouses.

Well, 23 year old British film graduate Joshua Douglas Bagley, a remarkable young man with ambitions of directing visually exciting films, has come up with a short documentary on Nyeri town.

He recently visited the area, and with a focus of promoting particularly primary schools, came up with this short clip showcase of Mathari and the Ol Pejeta and Sangare conservancies in the area.

The video features the famed soundtrack to Disney’s animation ‘The Lion King’ and sees Joshua taking the viewer on a virtual safari around Nyeri, Kenya.

Have a look at the video below…

KENYAN MEDIA ACTIVIST SHOT DEAD!

Independent Media Centre Kenya organizer Stephen Nyash was shot dead last Tuesday under mysterious circumstances just outside where he lived in Nairobi’ Korogocho slums.

Stephen Nyash, a radio journalist and activist, was one of the founders of popular Koch FM in the area and had dedicated his life to serving his community, which included the slum dwellers of Nairobi’s sprawling slum area, Korogocho.

John Bwak, Nyash’s colleague, narrated of how Stephen always had a smile on his face and a deep passion to serve the less fortunate of the society, guarding them against the injustices he consistently witnessed targeted at them.

On Saturday 18th Feb 2012, John had spoken with Nyash over the phone because he was in Lamu on business, and they had planned to meet the following Wednesday to plan over some Indymedia activities for the coming month. He got back a day before and on the morning they were supposed to meet, Bwak got a text message from another colleague telling him:

‘We have lost Nyash, bonge la maandamano Koch.’ (there are demonstrations in Korogocho)

Nyash had been shot in the chest and stomach barely a few hours earlier under circumstances that still baffle the police. He did not make it to hospital.

In Independent Media Centre (Indymedia’s) last ‘Conference of the People’, organized to coincide with the ‘Conference of Parties’ talks on Climate Change, Stephen was focal in organizing and mobilizing local activists and stake holders to the meeting that was meant to help empower area residents.

‘From the moment he knew about Indymedia Kenya, he became not just an active participant, but a leader of the movement,’ said John Bwak, ‘ he even represented IMC Kenya at the continental meet in Dakar earlier in the year.’

Nyash will be buried on the 3rd of March 2012. He leaves behind a widow and two children, aged 3 and 10 years.

The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has announced that it will be distributing royalties from radio and television stations to Kenyan artistes from yesterday, Feb 28th 2012.

These royalties will be distributed based on the log sheets collected from radio and television stations which have paid and submitted proper documentation from the period of July 1st 2010 to June 2011. The society will also use some in-house monitoring software for comparison purposes.

Of a total of over Kshs. 16 million submitted by broadcasters, the MCSK will deduct administrative fees amounting to close to 20% resulting in the relevant artistes obtaining the remainder of just over Kshs. 13 million.

50 Cent’s new song inspired by visit to Kenya & Somalia

Last month, 50 Cent toured Somalia and Kenya with aim of seeing the hunger situations here, and helping out the best way he can. In Kenya, he even walked the streets of Kibera and spent some time with the kids.

He got to see, first hand, the suffering, poverty stricken and hungry families that are not visible in the sandy beaches advertisements for tourism’s sake.

All this inspired the rapper to do a track that will reflect on his time spent in Africa. He told sources, “I’ve put portions of my experience there in the actual songs, but it’s so small that they’ll have to listen to get it. I wanted to keep the record, creatively, in a space where when people listen to it, they just enjoy it before they can really understand what it was I’m saying; there’s things on it that have double meanings.”

Donating proceedings from sales of his energy drink, ‘Street Kings’ to families and orphanages, 50 Cent is at the front line on the war against hunger in Africa.

Way to go Fiddy.

He was called TPF4’s Ng’ang’alito, reason… hehehe, I won’t mention that here. We are all about positivity. Well then, guess what? I don’t know exactly where he has been but he is back and he’s not quiet about it.

K-denk just released his latest track titled ‘Engu-Gori?’. As you probably guessed from the name of the track, I can’t understand anything in the song since most of it is not English or Swahili (except the part for the lady), but it sounds really good and is definitely for the clubs.

Watch out for this one. have a look below.

KBC STAFF GO ON STRIKE

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) employees have this morning gone on strike as a result of an alleged excess of over Kshs. 300 million in salary arrears.

The strike, initially set for February 23rd 2012, was differed by the staff union as they gave the management time to put its house in order. A week later, however, the company’s Director came up with what employees said were virtually insignificant reforms.

According to sources, KBC accrues roughly Kshs. 30 million from unpaid salaries and allowances, and with the growing number of casual workers at the station, who were apparently also promised speedy integration into the workforce, there are numerous people within the organization obviously disgruntled.

Trouble began when scores of employees received their payslips which had deductions from their union allowances. This ofcourse was evidence that they had been silently demoted. Now KBC staff members are waiting for official letters of demotion so that they may commence the legal process.

Other allegations that KBC hires casual labourers or interns, and fails to employ them, even upto nine years down the line. They receive no allowances of any sort from the management and are constantly assured of employment.

On February 10th, Information Ministry Permanent Secretary Bitange Ndemo ordered KBC to implement the Code of Conduct and pay its employees but it seems the issues facing the corporation are deep rooted.

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) is a state run organization that broadcasts in both English and Kiswahili, which are national languages of the country. It was started in 1928 under the British colonialists and has steadily grown to what it is today.

KBC staff goes on strike as GSU take’s over the security

It’s official that State owned media house KBC workers are on strike from today even as their Managing Director

Chief WaithakaWaihenya declared the strike illegal.

The government deployed its paramilitary police unit GSU to KBC to take over the security for fear that the striking workers may paralyze the normal functioning of the parastatal.

It’s reported that the GSU are harassing other journalists who want to cover the KBC’s story. They are even confiscating their cameras in order to see the contents of what has been recorded.

The workers have downed their tools demanding better pay and working conditions. They also want the company to pay them their outstanding areas.

A SONG FOR KENYA’S GREAT SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN

Kenyans haven’t had the chance of listening to much music celebrating our great sports personalities who consistently and continually put our great country on the map.

In fact, if you were asked about what song you thought represented the best in our athletes or players, I’m sure not many of you would name just one…let alone five. The last effort at recognizing these patriots must be Nameless’ hit single ‘Coming Home’.

Checkout ‘Coming Home’ Lyrics here >>

WHY YOU COULDN’T DOWNLOAD OVER THE WEEKEND

If you’re a Safaricom subscriber and were wondering why you could not stream your YouTube videos or download your favourite songs over the weekend, and Internet speeds were unbearable, well here’s why…

Safaricom announced that a cut had occurred on its critical TEAMS (The East African Marine Systems) undersea data cable over the weekend.

Maritime officials at the Kenyan coast had confirmed that a shipping vessel had severed the cable around midday on Saturday 25th Feb 2012, about 5 miles off the coastline when it dropped its anchor. Safaricom customers experienced low Internet speeds during the weekend, with other services such as blackberry services and international voice calls being affected.

The company however swiftly altered all Internet traffic to other routes, principally the other SEACOMS network, though they are concerned over the impact this will have on all data services in the region, as TEAMS is one of 3 focal connectivity points for the wider East African region.

Anto Neosoul’s new song

First thing’s first… I really have to say, I love this guy’s voice [no homo]. I mean, dude can sing and can act too. Talk about extreme talents.

Any way, Anto’s been busy as most Kenyan Artistes are these days, and has been cooking up some some hot tracks for us all. The track titled ‘engineer penja’ is yet another Afro soul genre from him and this one, like all his previous songs, is just amazing.

He also worked on a track with Octopizzo and was surprised to know that tuko rada yake mbaya!!!

Well, Anto, now you know. It is because we are your die hard fans that we are on your every move.

Just the other day Ogopa DJs singer Jaguar bought a white Range Rover sports.

Gospel singer Ringtone was not left behind as he purchased a Range Rover vogue while Nameless is driving a BMW X5 and now word is that the award winning gospel musician Daddy Owen will be importing an Escalade.

When asked about it he refused to comment on the issue. If it`s true then he will join the ranks of musicians who owns the best rides in Kenya. It seems music is paying nowadays.

Most popular lyrics on Ghafla!

The multi-talented artiste has recently did a new track which is getting quite a good reception as all his songs do. After releasing a serious hit,

‘toklezea’, Abbas Kubaff is now back with a new track.

‘Safari na hii’ is on top of our most popular lyrics chart and has been there since it was uploaded. The lyrically lethal rapper just finished shooting his ‘toklezea’ video with Chantelle and will soon be released.

Check out ‘safari na hii’ lyrics.

who is the real owner?

It seems Jimmy Gait and DK are not in good terms as they all want to take credit for ‘furi furi’ song.

DK claims that the whole idea was his and that Jimmy Gait registered the song with Skiza under his own name without his knowledge and did not even credit him.

He confirmed that there are two versions of ‘furi furi’ song. First version was labeled as DK ft Jimmy Gait while the second one is by DK and Jimmy Gait (this the hit song).

Jimmy Gait insists that the idea was his and that DK only featured in the song.

‘SOUL BOY’ is about a young boy that sets out in search of the witch that stole his father’s soul.

The acting, script and quality of everything in this movie is just OFF THE HOOK.

MTV award winner Wahu’s ‘still a liar’ is going higher.MTV award winner: Wahu

Produced by R Kay, the video has been the topic of many conversations on the social networks . Despite criticism on the song, ‘still a liar’ has won the hearts of many… even mine.

Let us see if it will survive the next month on the number one spot.

Man Ingwe releases ‘Ngeli’…with swag

The man that spreads the gospel through humor is back and this time, he brought swag (but he’s still using the Luhya Swahili-which is quite entertaining).

All his tracks have captured the hearts of his fans through the humor that comes automatic with his character,(check out his lyrics) and this is no exception. ‘Ngeli’ is all about teaching everyone on the polite language to be used when asking or talking about anything. Especially politicians.

If you observe the video carefully, you will notice that, compared with his other videos, this one actually has some swag to it. He even mentions it.

Check it out.
