SAD: Only Two Kenyan Films Nominated For African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA)

Well, the announcement for the nominees for Africa’s most “prestigious” film award; Africa Movie Academy Awards took place at the Emperor Palace Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa few weeks ago.

As expected, Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana are leading the pack in the race to win the coveted prizes at the 2014 edition of the award ceremony which is to take place in the few coming weeks at the oil-rich state of Bayelsa in Nigeria.

I'm not even mad. (Will Ferrell)

But I was downhearted to realize that out of the 27 Categories, Kenya bagged only 5 nominations; 4 nominations went to “Ni Sisi” and the other one to “Haunted Soul”. But Ni Sisi’s 4 nominations can’t make me happy, why? Check out the sort of categories it was nominated in.

This Has Got To Be The ‘Thirstiest’ Reaction To The New Sexy Sauti Sol Video

We all have something to say about the new Sauti Sol video ‘Nishike’ where the boys men embrace their sexy side and step out looking all hot and ravishing  leaving girls all hot and bothered in their wake.

I have seen hilarious reactions to the video but this by JB Kiptanui took the cake:

You people are foul. Horrible, awful, terrible for this #nishike video!!! Did you not take into consideration any female lady parts when you made this vid??? The elastic in my underwear practically melted as I watched from all that heat.Y’all low key made me reassess my cookie action…y’all made me go to the mtaani gym to scout for a bae…I’ve stopped talking to men if I think they can’t do them Delvin squats with that rod action!!.. Yal frustrated me….whoooooooo *fans self* God Bless the strength of those video girls for not coming out of character! (But we need the behind the scenes hmmm) I wanna Praise not only God but Jesus for your Talents and bodies Urgh *bites lip and opens a cold shower*

KTN’s Gavana Actors Land New Jobs

Two of the actors in KTN show, Gavana, have just landed themselves a new gig.

This Saturday, Derrick and Scolly will be the official MCs at Candy n Candy’s first ever event in Nairobi, a road-show around Nairobi meant to promote its new Garage & Grime .

Gavana is a comedy sitcom for general family meant to satirize the political antics of the newly elected governor. The local drama on the new country Government structure in Kenya sheds light on the drama behind Governance as told through the lens.

The Candy n Candy road-show will cover the most popular residential areas in Nairobi with plenty of entertainment from the Shepherds Dance Crew, plus there will be plenty of give aways from sick headphones, MP3 players and more so watch out for their truck.

“We Don’t Know You”: iClub Nairobi

Plausibly one of the hottest night clubs in Nairobi, iClub has stepped forward to deny any involvement in a club using a similar name and being promoted by its owners who claim to be aligned to the CBD club.

According to club’s manager, Joseph Kalama, the Nyeri based club has been in operation for quite some time and he only got wind of it a few days ago.

The Nyeri iClub copied the same design as the Kimathi-street one from the interior design and everything ambience. However, the only thing they never jacked is the logo.

Joseph warns the public, “Please beware that we’re in no way affiliated to the iClub in Nyeri. They’re using our name to market themselves and we want the public to be aware of this.”

Sauti Sol: From Sweet Singing Sensation To Sultry Sex Symbols

Sauti Sol has inflamed the lusts of an entire generation with their new video’ Nishike’. With over 29,000 views in less than 24 hours its clear Kenyans love this rare, risqué and risky side of Sauti Sol.

The boys looked every inch the strapping gentlemen, shirtless, flaunting their chiseled bodies and taut oily abs. I for one I love the new side of Sauti Sol because damn, the boys look good! I also love the fact that they went out of their way to actually look good for this video, working out, getting posh props and getting the best man in the business to shoot their latest video.

{youtube}KYFQRuqQ7EM{/youtube}

I have a feeling that breaking out of the sweet naïve Sauti Sol look for something more raw, beastly and different could just push their career into the stratosphere because nothing screams sexy like eye candy that is ear candy.

Popular Artist Vows to Marry Multiple Wives Now that Polygamy is Legal

Yesterday, President Uhuru made polygamy an easy affair after he signed into law a controversial marriage bill legalising polygamy.

It now brings civil law, where a man was only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners.

Controversy surrounded an amendment to the bill, supported by many male MPs, allowing men to take more wives without consulting existing spouses.

Anyhow, fast-rising rapper, Majirani, has become the first person in showbiz to react to the bill saying that he will now marry upto 7 wives.

“Marriage bill 7 wives pap MTU asibonge mbaya so wale madem husemanga ati baby all I nid from u is a gud f**k n time haha inafaaa ujue hakuna hio time yote sahi coz kuna wengine sita inafaa washugulikiwe ichieni#teamMAJIRANI” posted the Ivo Ndio Kunaendanga hitmaker on social media.

Hilarious Open Letter to Citizen TV’s Lilian Muli

Lilian Muli is one of the best things that ever happened to Kenyan TV because her presence just makes the news interesting again and that is a fact. As top anchor at Citizen TV, Lilian is undoubtedly one of the fashionable female TV anchors.

The anchor toes a fine line when it comes to style. Her wardrobe is dynamic enough to hold viewers’ attention but not so outré to distract from the evening broadcast. And this seems to be the issue with a section of women.

In an open letter addressed to Lilian, the “women’s rep”, Beryl Wanga Itindi wants her to know the “torture” she subjects them to. Here’s the open letter as it appeared on Beryl’s blog, Stories And Poems From Kenya;

Dear Lilian Muli Kanene,

When we leave our homes each day/night to go and earn a living, we always make sure that we are at our best. We risk our ankles by balancing on those high heels and swing our hips by force. We carry expensive handbags and make sure our jewelery is intact! You see those wigs/weaves that some of us have on, Lilian, they are uncomfortable, but do we have a choice? Hell no! We don’t! We just have to make our husbands proud by being at our best, it’s always full of suffering, our Golgotha.

Once we get home in the evening, we leave our bags at ‘mama mboga’ coz they are always too heavy for us in the evening and ask our children to go back for them once we are in the house. We remove our shoes at the stairs coz that’s where the suffering ends, our Calvary. We live on the 11th floor remember? And our stairs are too steep! By the time we are on sixth floor, we meet our children running down stairs to mama mboga to bring us our bags, they meet us with a glass of water to give us the strength to get to 11th floor.

Lilian_Muli_3.jpg

When we reach our houses, our heads are spinning around, probably from the long day we have had in our high heels and sexy attires. That figure belt we had all day that presses our stomachs inside, we remove it at the door and finally start breathing normally. Our wigs, we drop them on the coffee table as we ask our lastborns to massage our feet. We go to the bathroom and freshen up then put on a t-shirt and tie a lesso. We then drop (remember I did not say ‘sit’, I said ‘drop’), we drop on our seats and stretch our legs in time to catch the nine o’clock bulletin coz we are always caught up in traffic at 7pm.

Just before it begins, our husbands walk in, tired and ready to give us all the attention we need. We miss them all day remember? We only see them at night because they leave us on Saturdays to go have fun with fellow men. They sleep all Sunday coz they were up all night on Saturday. When they finally wake up Sunday evening, they already have the Monday blues and are so edgy. Lilian baby, we only get to see them in their good moods during weekday, at night to be specific.

Lilian_Muli_4.jpg

It was all going well until your dresser improved his/her services. Surely Lilian, whoever is dressing you is making us suffer? Do you want us to maintain the heels, figure belts and wigs even in our own homes so that you don’t catch our husbands’ attention while presenting news? Lilian, you will be the end of us! Instead of night dresses we are now serving dinner in heels and making sure our lip balm is intact so that we match up to the game! Calvary jumped out the window in our homes and Golgotha sneaked in through all the openings! When are we going to be free?

Dear Lilian, I hear there is a new radio station coming up. I swear you sound so nice on radio, please apply for it. I will even canvass for you!

Yours truly,
Secretary General Komayole Forward Travellers,
Window shopping at Jamia mall right now because of you yet am broke!

Capital FM’s Mogul Chris Kirubi Sagely Advice To The Youth

Anne Waiguru’s announcement that over 700,000 jobs were created last year caused some loud grumbling from the young and jobless .”How is it possible that over 700,000 jobs were created and we did not get any?” they asked.

Business mogul Chris Kirubi had some words of advice for those complaining:

Yesterday when Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru announced that 700,000 new jobs were created last year, it caused an uproar especially with the many young unemployed people.

However, I would like to say this… Governments anywhere in the world create more of opportunities than jobs. You cannot afford to sit back and wait for jobs to given to you. Identify the opportunities and get hold of them. I am impressed by those in the diaspora who identified opportunities and managed to create great livelihoods for themselves and their families. It’s all about what we are willing to do with the opportunities and resources that we have been given. If you are too ‘blinded’ by your current state and are waiting to be spoon fed, then woe unto you. Be pro-active and rightfully demand and get what is yours.

Sieze the opportunity and make it work for you

Citizen TV’s Kambua Pays Glowing Tribute to Late Dad in a Touching Post

Renowned Gospel singer, TV and host, Kambua Manundu, has paid a rich tribute to her late dad, Professor Manundu, who was laid to rest over the weekend in Makindu in a moving post on her blog, Reflections of an African Girl (Kambua).

Here’s that;

On the 9th of April 2014 heaven gained a most amazing angel- my daddy. There is so much I want to say but the pain in my heart is like none other I have experienced before. But this blog post is not about the pain, the tears, or even the void that my dad left, but more so the life lessons I learned from a most peculiar man.

The months leading up to his home going were difficult in many ways, but it is during that time that I gained invaluable strength that I would otherwise have never attained.

I thank God that He accorded dad the opportunity to bid us a proper farewell, and gave us in turn a chance to let him know how much we loved and valued him. Some days were harder than others, and my strength waned more often that I would like to admit. But each day God poured his grace afresh. I have come to know that grace is not the absence of the struggle, but rather the presence of God’s protection in the struggle. God protected us, and he protected my precious father until the day He called him home.

Together with my family and friends we prayed and trusted God to heal my dad, and we held on to the hope that since God had graciously healed him in the past, He could do it again. One day as I was walking through the corridors of the hospital that had quickly become a second home, I bumped into a lady who had brought her ailing mom for treatment; she was terminally ill. The lady recognized me and we began to talk.

Kambua dad

Kambua & her dad during her wedding

She told me that she was trusting in God to heal her mother, knowing fully well that God can heal physically or permanently by taking her mother home. Up until then I had wrestled with the possibility of God taking dad home. But that day my prayer changed.  I made my peace with God. I continued to trust for physical healing without relenting, but I found comfort in knowing that if dad went home to be with God, that was healing too. Today I can boldly proclaim that my daddy is healed…forever healed!

Koma nesa daddy…lala salama…you are home now…kwa Yesu ndiko nyumbani. Until we meet again, dance with the angels, teach them all your fun, cheesy songs…your laughter will always ring in my ears. I will carry you in my heart always…

Stunning HBR News Anchor Joins the ‘Fattening Room’

Reserved for women only – six young ladies from across Africa enter the Efik Fattening Room on an adventure of self-discovery for the every first time.

The FATTENING ROOM is an authentic experience set in the historically significant city of Calabar, also home to the famous Calabar Cultural Festival.

The Fattening Room is an ancient rite practiced by the Efik culture of Nigeria when young women would enter a house of seclusion to learn everything a woman needs to know about running a household, raising children and keeping her future husband happy at home.

Beautiful singer, actress and HBR News Anchor, Patricia Kihoro is among the six ladies.

In old Efik tradition voluptuous women with wide childbearing hips were more than desirable. Tended hand and foot with large meals, they would fill out fast in the fattening room.

Add to it a modern twist and these women will embark on a journey of self-discovery as they experience an age-old tradition and learn the art of true womanhood and the secret of finding and keeping true love

The ladies start the series in the strict Efik tradition and journey towards modern invention while always honouring their African roots.

Patricia joins Stephanie Unachukwu (designer and fashionista from Nigeria), Roselyn Ashkar (a fashion model from Ghana), Sally Berold (an adventurer and skateboarder from South Africa), Tshepo Maphanyanye (publicity and public relations executive from Botswana) and Limpo Funjika (a business development manager from Zambia).

Kenyans On Twitter Viciously Roast South Africa

Kenyans on twitter are on fire this fine sunny morning; this is due to a careless comment by the South African Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula.

According to Mail and Guardian, a journalist questioned the minister on the fact that some South African National teams remain predominantly white.
You can’t transform sports without targets,” said Mbalula. But at the same time, South Africa wouldn’t be like Kenya and send athletes to the Olympics to “drown in the pool”, he added.

This Comment elicited some harsh reactions from KOT. Check them out:

When Talent Meets Opportunity, The Success Story Of Sarakasi

Talent incubation and development has always been an issue in this side of the world. However, thanks to several players in the industry, a lot is turning on the positive and many a youth can directly live off their gifts.

One such major player on the local scene is Sarakasi Trust. Here are three premium events organized by the trust that have shaped the local talent scene and ones you shouldn’t miss out on!

sawasawa3.jpg

One of these is the annual Sawa Sawa Festival, held during the Madaraka weekend in the beginning of June. Important objectives for hosting an event of this kind are to develop audiences, bring profile and exposure to Kenyan artists and build capacity in the area of cultural entrepreneurship and festival production.

Sarakasi Trust initiated the concept of the annual Sawa Sawa Festival to create a unique festival with an African identity appealing to the Kenyan public at large while at the same time creating an opportunity to reach out to audiences across age, gender, cultural and economical back grounds.

Sawa Sawa aims to promote and stage the performing arts through several platforms like workshops, exchanges between local and international artistes, technical skill and cultural sharing workshops, community building (theme) activities, jam sessions/studio recordings, media activations and the multi stage multi day concerts.

The Sawa Sawa Festival attracts audiences of over 100,000 people. To date two documentaries about the festival have been produced. Always at hand to spice up the event are the Sarakasi All Stars, showcasing the best in acrobatics and dance.

Another such event are the Sound In Motion workshops held each third Friday of every month. The Sarakasi Dome is the venue of Sound in Motion workshops facilitated by Artists for Artists in which invited deejays, producers, speakers and seasoned artists share their experiences and provide advice to young affiliated musicians. After the first Sound in Motion workshop at a Sawa Sawa Festival 2012, Sarakasi was asked to continue the initiative on a regular basis – and we did just that!  The seasoned artists who have given time to our developing performers include Kris Darling, Nick Odhiambo, Octopizzo, Karen Mukupa and her band, and Mzungu Kichaa.
