Vera Sidika’s Bleaching Gets Top American Blog Vice Talking About The Bleaching Epidemic In Kenya

Vera Sidika has caused quite a storm with her open unapologetic bleaching. When it started off, there were trolls from every corner of the internet taking shots at her. But now things just got serious. When I first posted about Vera toasting the creams she uses and thanking them for making her lighter, I refused to get in too deep to the story and the issues.

As far as I was concerned this is not the avenue for discussing such issues. but for me to say that is sheer cowardice. Plus someone else will just come out to ask all the tough questions. So I will do that… Some other day. For now, allow me to show you how a top American website called Vice picked on the story, the angle they opted to use and the story they ran:

Rich Kenyans Are Injecting Themselves with Black Market Creams to Become White

Standing in a small wooden booth cluttered with brightly colored cosmetics boxes a heavily made up woman unwraps a syringe and a needle, then fills the syringe with pink cream that’s been decanted from a blue packet. “You must only use a small amount, otherwise you can become albino. This is strong stuff,” she says as she pricks her customer’s skin.

Rose is one of dozens of skin bleaching gurus that operate along River Road in downtown Nairobi, a hub for illicit activities that is notorious for its knock-off electronics, budget brothels, flamboyant transsexuals and petty crime. It is also known for its backstreet beauticians, like Rose, who promise clients that their treatments will make them look six years younger and ten shades lighter.

These salons have been around for a long time, and have caused a number of health scares over the years, often due to creams with high mercury content, but recently more extreme treatments have started to become popular and are causing concern amongst health officials.

The popularity of skin-bleaching injections has rocketed over the last 18 months according to Dr Pranav Pancholi, a Harvard-trained dermatologist who works at Kenya’s Shah Hospital. Pranav says because it’s a recent phenomenon, no one really knows what the long-term health implications are.

“The products used on the streets are not used by certified professionals” he says. “The trade in black market creams and injections is completely unregulated. There is no way of knowing just how dangerous they are.”

Biggest Festival for Fashion and Arts Just Got Better!

Jameson Irish Whiskey is delighted to partner with this year’s Festival of African Fashion & Arts (FAFA).  For the second year running the premium brand will take centre stage at the worthy cause.

The Jameson spirit is a celebration of the enthusiasm, passion and pride for craftsmanship, a tradition dating back to the origins of the whiskey created by John Jameson.  A partnership with FAFA is therefore a natural fit as we come together to celebrate the passion and innovation of our local designers.

Wanjiru Njenga, Marketing Manager Pernod Ricard Kenya highlighted ‘the Jameson culture is about savouring every moment in life.  Today, that means celebrating our whiskey-lovers stories in every way. We come together at FAFA to celebrate the stories our designers share through their collections’.

She further added ‘together they form a complete lifestyle experience’.

Guests attending the FAFA show on 31st May 2014 will be able to enjoy a premium experience within the exclusive Jameson lounge.

Who is Hotter? DJ Nijo vs DJ Pinye

Political Activist Responds to Allegations that He Planned to Kill Robert Alai

In April, blogger Robert Alai claimed his life was in danger. The highly-influential was accusing political activist, Moses Kuria and a controversial lawyer of plotting to kill him over comments he posted on Twitter.

This week, the political activist was finally given a right of reply when he was interviewed by a Nairobian reporter and his answer is quite interesting. Here’s an excerpt of the interview;

JOURNALIST: Some people on social media rejoiced when reports claimed you were among those dead when former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga’s vehicle was sprayed with bullets. Your take?

MOSES KURIA: Yes I died. I am here in hell. JARAMOGI says hi.

JOURNALIST: There are allegations that you are always high on something when you appear on TV debates. True or false?

MOSES KURIA: Yes. I speak under the influence of patriotism. I am always high on my love for this country.

JOURNALIST: There is a voice recording on the internet in which it was purported you said you wanted to kill activist Robert Alai…

MOSES KURIA: I heard it from my good friend called John Mututho. He told me Robert Alai claimed I wanted to kill him, and he wanted Sh300,000 from me. Who has got time to kill Alai? When people are broke they should engage in real work, not conmanship.

CNN’s ‘Inside Africa’ Profiles Kenya’s Lamu Island

Following a recent profile on CNN International’s ‘Inside Africa’ programme on Kenya’s old fishing village, Watamu, the show returns to the Kenyan coastline once more.

This week on ‘Inside Africa’, there’s a special focus on the Swahili culture and traditions that form part of East Africa’s best travel destination, Lamu. ‘Inside Africa’ reveals that unlike other Swahili settlements along the East African coast, Lamu has been inhabited for more than 700 years.

For centuries, Lamu was a thriving town, along Arabic, Portuguese, Indian and African trading routes.  Today, it’s one of the most historically important Swahili towns, and stands out for its charm.

lamu2.jpg

‘Inside Africa’ takes viewers through the famed island of Lamu, showcasing the architecture, coral cutting activities and reveals that most buildings are a fusion of Indian, Persian, Arabic and European influences. It is these foreign influences that makes Swahili a unique culture though also some-physical culture are very much  influenced by Indians, Chinese, Arabs.

‘Inside Africa’ also meets with some Lamu residents, like artisans and builders who are key in preserving local customs and maintaining Lamu’s Swahili identity – one largely characterized by distinct architecture that has stood the test of time

Sonko is without a doubt one of the most popular, bighearted and hardworking politicians around, he is a man of the people and the public have such a soft spot for him such that they prefer to turn blind eye to his theatrics.

Rapper Octopizzo blames Sonko’s problems on ‘ana umtaa mob’ that is he is too ghetto and that’s why carrying himself civilly in public is a toll order. He thinks that Sonko should just take a chill pill and iron out his issues with Shebesh. Check out the clip below:

In 2012 Ruth Matete emerged the winner TPF 5 and it wasn’t long before her life became the media’s scrutiny. Well, the House of Grace praise and worship singer has had her fair share with drama.

Sauti Sol: We Are Unapologetic For Our Actions

After the release of their sizzling video, “Nishike”, everyone was busy castigating Sauti Sol for their eroded morals but secretly propelled the video to a whooping 500,000+ views.

And now Bien, speaking for the hottest boy band around has broken silence on their position as a group post “Nishike” video. He said;

“Sauti Sol is unapologetic for our actions, which we feel have done the music industry more good than harm. The truth is nobody ever made history by playing it safe. Playing safe explains why most of our adverts on local TV look the same. If the opportunity cost of getting endorsements is to do that which is NOT game-changing, then it’s a cross we’re willing to carry.

We have opened the gates for artists to express themselves freely, including sensually without prejudice. Will it take 10 more Nishikes from 10 other artists for us to embrace publicly what we enjoy in private? I’m sure most of you watch Nishike during your private moments. I mean how else could you explain 500,000 + views in 21 days?

Kenyans largely suffer from tall poppy syndrome—a  social phenomenon, in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers. So forgive Sauti Sol for taking a two-month intense gym programme, a low carb diet and risking the road less travelled in the attempt to rise above.

KOT (Kenyans on Twitter) were salty at Lupita during Shuga and embraced her after the Oscars. To date, some people still hate claiming she’s not Kenyan enough or doesn’t dress in Kenyan designers (who btw didn’t dress her for Shuga’s red carpet). In retrospect, are you waiting for Sauti Sol to win a Grammy to then come on board? Note I am not only fishing for complements; I am very open to constructive criticism because social media is a two-edged sword. Nonetheless, let’s face it – there’s just too much hate on social media. If all that negative influence is carried to the boardroom it directly affects critical decisions that upset a whole industry.”

Click HERE to read more on what he says.

You’ve Got To Salute This New Kid On The Block for Making Kenya Proud

Why so many prominent and established Kenyan artistes are yet to have their songs on VEVO is yet to be known and any pointers for now will just be conjecture.

Shebesh Takes To Drum Magazine To Dispell Infidelity Rumours (PHOTO)

I have to get myself this month’s issue of Drum Magazine because I want to read all about this marriage. See the thing is, there have been rumours swirling about the Women’s rep and Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko. there is even a story about a gun drama that I shan’t get into seeing as melanin isn’t bullet proof.

However, there is a story in this month’s issue of Drum Magazine that is beautifully written and is Shebesh’s effort to change her demonized image in the public eye. Now, boys and girls, it’s time for a short story from Uncle Chim Tuna, God’s Chosen Blogger:

A while back, some blogs ran a story backed by alleged photographs of Sonko in bed with Shebesh. The blogger has since passed on to glory (he’s dead). But that damaged Shebesh’s public standing.

She has somehow put that behind her and is now focusing on celebrating her marriage. Check out the cover of the issue below:

Life Takes a DepressingTurn for Sauti Sol after the Release of Their Steamy Video ‘Nishike’

Boring. Average. Feeble. Mediocre. That’s what society wants us to be. ‘Do not be a risk taker’, ‘play it safe’, ‘don’t stand out fit in’ they say but as we all know everyone who has made a change was willing to break out of the norm .They dared to become different.

I believe as human beings we should dare to be different, a little weird maybe, bend and break the rules if possible. Being different or revamping yourself to stand out from the crowd however comes at a price, just like the band Sauti Sol has come to realize .

In his blog Bien Aime says:

“With the release of our third album around the corner, a bi-weekly meeting to discuss general progress is paramount. This morning we (Sauti Sol) met with our overall management to discuss the way forward. The meeting started in a rather disheartening tone. All our potential corporate sponsors pulled out after the release of Nishike. After months of meetings and presentations, below are their reasons for the sudden change of heart.

  •     ‘Sauti Sol is now too out there’
  •     ‘Sauti Sol has ceased  to be a brand that associates with family and Kenyan values.’
  •     ‘Sauti Sol is too risky; they show great potential to break up, get into drugs or other vices that don’t represent       company values.’
  •     ‘Sauti Sol is not Kenyan enough.’
  •     ‘Sauti Sol has lost more fans than they have gained’”

For anyone else, they would bend over backwards to fit into their sponsors needs but not Sauti Sol.

Bien says, “We bid farewell to all corporates who have walked away from what we felt would be classic industry changing partnerships, Sauti Sol will continue haunting you by trending and setting trends for your consumers. To our fans, aluta continua. We will always count on you to be ambassadors of the new generation of epic thinkers. Our value will never decrease based on someone’s inability to see our worth.”

To Sauti sol, stick to your guns. Make your videos friskier, different ,riskier; remember “Only those who play win. Only those who risk win. History favors risk-takers and forgets the timid. ― Iveta Cherneva

When Ethnic Rap Becomes Awesome! You Have To Watch This Video

The last time i saw Raj, he was being accused of being a member of the illuminati. That was then. He’s back with some great instrumentals and an awesome track that seeks to celebrate everything about being Kisii! And I kid you not when I say that this track is many levels of awesome.

On this one, Raj teamed up with one of the hottest names in Kenyan rap at the moment: Smallz Lethal. And he went in H.A.M making me actually seek out a Kisii just so no lyrical delivery was beyond my scope! I had to get to know what this was about.

The track celebrates bananas and is called “Ndizi Flow” after the one thing Kisii are known to love. And with that, allow me to let you watch the video without me sapping from the awesomeness:

Following in big brother’s footsteps, “Government Blogger”, Dennis Itumbi’s younger brother a graduate in Education and Public Relations has taken to the entertainment industry.

Kevin Karaya who is also a trained DJ under the stage name, DJ Kid, is currently playing prank roles on Citizen TV’s Naswa.

Contacted to confirm the development, Itumbi said, “I play his music in the car, DJ Kid is hustling and claiming his space, am sure he will succeed because he is passionate about it.”

Adding, “They recorded together with his cousin Brian and soon he tells me he will be releasing a video”

This By Far is the Most Hilarious Comedy Clip by Anne Kansiime

There’s no doubt that Anne Kansiime is the best thing that could ever happen in comedy in East Africa. In fact, it’s safe to say she’s the reigning comedienne in the region.

So I just came across one of her numerous clips, and I can almost swear that it’s the best and most hilarious Kansiime skit I’ve watched.

In this particular clip, Kansiime an armed robber breaks into a man’s house but instead of getting away with his valuables, he decides to wake up the guy and give him a lecture on why he doesn’t have expensive possessions in “this era of flat screen TVs”.

Have a hearty laugh;
