Mutua Matheka’s Photo Featured on BBC

Budding photographer Mutua Matheka is not new to the limelight (pun intended). His photographic lens coupled with brilliant angles and timing have made him famous on the social network scape as the go-to-guy for excellent photography.

His star is shining so bright that the visual artist, an architect by profession by the way, was today featured on BBC’s African Images of daily life. What an achievement.

Click here to have a look at some of the featured work

Mutua Matheka (aka the Truthslinger) currently works as an interior designer, though his photography began in 2009 when he got his first camera, a Nikon D40. He didn’t really study photography professionally but developed a taste for it, and particularly architectural scapes, interiors and buildings. He mostly likes taking pictures from the top of the Kenyatta International Conference Centre at the heart of the Kenyan capital.

Prince William and Kate Middleton at Launch of ‘African Cats’

Following the British obsession with African, and more perticularly Kenyan, wildlife, Disney released it’s latest photographic exhibition, ‘African Cats’ over the weekend in the English capital.

African Cats the photographic exhibition, is captured by photographer Paul Goldstein and based on the massively popular African Cats series of films based on two prides of lions and a cheetah with her cub on the plains of the Maasai Mara.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were at the launch of the series. You can check out some of the images on display HERE

Documentary Filmed in Kenya wins Tribeca Film Award

A film titled ‘Wavumba’, set just off the coast of Kenya, has won an award for ‘Best New Documentary Director’ at the 2012 Tribeca Film Awards which were held on Thrusday night last week in New York City, USA.

The 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival, co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, and presented by founding sponsor American Express, announced the winners of its competition categories on teh night of April 26th 2012, at a ceremony hosted at the Conrad New York in New York City. The Festival ran through to last night, April 29, 2012.

The world competition winners for narrative and documentary films were chosen from 12 narrative and 12 documentary features from 18 countries. Best New Director prizes were awarded to a first-time director for both narrative and documentary films, selected from a pool of 24 feature films throughout the program. Awards were also given for the best narrative short, best documentary short and student visionary films in the short film competitions.

This year’s Festival included 89 features and 60 short films from 46 countries, programmed by a team led by Tribeca’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Gilmore, new Artistic Director Frederic Boyer, and Director of Programming Genna Terranova.

Also announced at the awards were the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival feature and short film winners selected by the online audience.

“It’s been so gratifying to see the audiences react so positively to the films, and our juries have been equally passionate. I celebrate these immensely talented filmmakers,” said Nancy Schafer, TFF Executive Director.

The jurors for the 2012 Best New Documentary Director Competition were Stuart Blumberg, Jared Cohen, Rachel Grady, Bethann Hardison, Sal Masekela, Ricki Stern, and Olivia Wilde.

The award was ‘Best New Documentary Director’ given to Dutchman Jeroen van Velzen for the title ‘Wavumba’ and for this prize he received $25,000 thanks to American Express.

The brief synopsis of Wavumba is:

Mysticism and color reign in this stunning documentary, steeped in the fishermen lore of Kenya. Dutch filmmaker Jeroen van Velzen explores his visceral memories of an early youth spent in coastal Kenya, where a reverence for the sea reigns high. Via the locals’ enigmatic recitation of a well known folktale, we are introduced to a spirit-filled island, to which a fisherman’s visit has the magic to alternately bless or curse his bounty.

Enter Masoud, a legend of shark fishing, a man who proudly wears his scars and knotted bones as proof of decades spent battling underwater foes. His glory days long gone, Masoud and his stoic grandson take to the seas, the elder fisherman unhappily relegated to the role of castigating mentor, battering his protégée with nagging critique. As he tries to close out his days on the water with one final, spectacular capture, Masoud spins grandiose stories told with swaggering pride and heartbreaking nostalgia.

Still, just as you start to question Masoud’s hold on reality, he confirms his stature with a display of astonishing skill and an intrinsic, almost religious mastery of his craft. An Old Man and the Sea story brought to vivid life, Wavumba enchants with its poignant protagonist and magnificent visuals.

The Tribeca Film Festival has screened more than 1,300 films from more than 80 countries since its first edition in 2002. Since inception, it has attracted an international audience of more than 3.7 million attendees and has generated an estimated $725 million in economic activity for New York City.

Ghafla’s video of the week

Celebrated Kenya’s dancehall king Kevin Wyre has proven to us that our Kenyan music is already on the international level.

His song ‘Guarantee’ where he features Jamaica’s sensational reggae stars Gramps and Peetah Morgan is a massive collabo. The video is tight, and this shows that Wyre is in his own class thus the other artistes should aim at attaining this.

Watch the video and have a say about it.

A Haven For Poets

The Kenyan Poets Lounge started almost two years ago and its active nature and speedy growth has attracted many poets both from within and without the country. Late last year, the members thought of creating something tangible out of their strong on-line relationship and that marked the birth of an anthology titled: THE POWER OF WORDS.

The book project incorporates poets from a wide range of poetry groups which include; Full-house, Poets Spot (All Saints Cathedral), Poetry Night (St. Andrews), the Kenyan Poets Lounge (University of Nairobi), the A.M.K.A. women’s forum… among others.

This all aims at uniting Kenyan poets and campaigning towards re-embrace the reading culture and appreciation of poetry as well as using it as a tool to transform society.

The main aim of the Poetry hub is to use the power of words to make a difference and empower the country in a positive way. They believe that poetry can speak for the voiceless, walk for the crippled and do much more than receiving moments of applaud in a restaurant.

In case you are interested or know of a poet who would want to be part of this initiative, you can send three of your poems as soon as you can, preferably on the topics of; FREEDOM, LIFE ISSUES, SOCIAL (IN)JUSTICE and LEADERSHIP, to:

The Battle for East Africa’s Viewership Tightens with Zuku…

In a move aimed at consolidating its market position by attracting new subscriptions, Kenya’s pay TV premium broadcaster Zuku has announced key projects for 2012, including the production or co-production of a number of new local programmes, the introduction of a Swahili Movie channel and a regional basketball tournament.

“As a local brand it makes absolute sense for us to invest in originating fresh, relevant and highly entertaining programming for the East African region” said Mwananchi Group CEO Richard Bell at the launch event.

It’s clear to note that there seems to be an ongoing tussle for East Africa’s home entertainment viewers, what with the recent launch of a brand new bouquette of DSTV Africa Magic channels, as well as Nation Media Group’s QTV launch. The broadcasters seem to be turning to localizing their brands in order to connect more with the regional audience.

Click here to read more on Africa Magic’s Launch
Zuku launched in Nairobi (on its cable network) in 2009 and countrywide in both Kenya and Uganda in late 2011. Tanzania was added to the platform later in 2012. Up to 400,000 people are now able to watch its channels.

“We project that by the end of 2012 we will have doubled our subscriber base as we plan to continuously enrich our product offering through accessible, affordable and relevant content” Mr Bell went on to say.
The new initiatives include a partnership with Steps Entertainment in Tanzania to develop Zuku Swahili Movies, a second series of popular talk show, Mentality, a travel / cooking series hosted by chef Kiran Jethwa, and two very different music shows.
Zuku is also looking to make its presence more tangible through a sponsorship of Nite of a Thousand Laughs, and Zuku Slamfest, an ambitious regional basketball tournament, to be held at Kasarani in July 2012 and which will bring together some of the best players around Africa to compete for the grand prize of $100,000 (approx Kshs. 8 million)
“We believe that there is a rapidly growing market segment that is eager to be part of a digital multi-channel television world for the range and choice that it offers to the whole family. Our offering has been structured to meet that need – and we see a truly exciting opportunity in this. As an East African company we are committed to maintaining a close focus on this market, and are delighted to be a part of its growth” concluded Mr. Bell.

The new programmes to be included in the Zuku Home entertainment bundle include:
Nite of 1000 laughs

A live comedy show featuring top comics from Africa including ‘Klint da Drunk’ Mandy Uzonitsha, Eric Omondi, Patrick Salvador, funny face amongst others. Zuku is an event sponsor and will also be broadcasting a series from May.
Mentality

Returning for a second season, the show is purposely designed to create controversy or confrontations as the 3 panelists, Ian Mbugua, Pastor Simon Mbuvi and Edward Kwach, push the envelope where discussions of topics deemed to be taboo are readily explored on mainstream TV.
Bush Larder

takes the viewer on a tour of Kenya and her more unusual and unknown gastronomic delights. The series is led by Kiran Jethwa, a Kenya born and internationally trained Chef who has returned from a global gastronomic education to settle in the country he loves, Kenya.
Slamfest

In collaboration with Vision 21 Sports Consulting – an avenue to showcase talent and skills in basketball. 8 countries will compete in this series.
Passport

A supplement to the Slamfest, this documentary series will act as a sort of behind the scenes that visits the diverse cultural backgrounds of those participating in the slam fest series
Black medley

will bring to light the diverse interests of the African Diaspora through film, webisodes and music.
Zuku Swahili movies

the first Kiswahili Movie channel done in partnership with Steps Entertainment from Dar es Salaam.
Hyped East Africa

a music travel show that showcases the different nightlife in cities and clubs.
AfroFuse

an African music show that will feature Africa Fusion music and is aimed at celebrating African Music.

Movie and videogame pirates to blame for the end of Safaricom unlimited data

According to Bob Collymore, a small number of internet users were taking up a large majority of the bandwidth available on the Safaricom network, which made offering unlimited internet an unsustainable business. How is it possible that it all came to this?

Well, studies have shown that the most bandwidth intensive activities on the internet are torrenting and streaming of large files, mostly movies and video games. Many Kenyans, especially those who pirate movies via torrent websites, are guilty of such practises. Was it beyond Safaricom to check out who is guilty of torrenting and prevent them from using the network? Many major ISPs, Access Kenya included, have systems in place to monitor the use of torrent and magnet files, and effectively lock down the perpetrators of these offenses. Safaricom’s actions seemed like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We spoke to a Safaricom Value Added Services manager Raymond Juma to clarify this issue.

He said, “Torrenters were abusing the system and ruining the experience for the other users. We decided instead of letting paying users to get a negative experience, to pull the plug on it altogether.”
On whether they should have identified the abusers, he said, “We tried throttling the offensive users one by one according to fair use principles, but what happens when you do that is that all the subscribers to the bundle get a negative experience. This is a global issue with mobile traffic. It didn’t make business sense. Other bundles were being used alot, so we decided to offer those to our customers.”

This is the perfect plan for tonight

Movie Review: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Indeed

You may not know this but ‘The Avengers’ director and writer, Joss Whedon, is also responsible for other amazing adaptations such as the Television series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ as well as ‘Angel’. He is also behind the action flick ‘Serenity’ which sadly didn’t make much of a footprint on the global box office, but nonetheless lives on to be a great work of art that Whedon should be proud of.

Other titles that can be accredited to Joss Whedon include Dollhouse (TV series), Toy Story, Firefly (TV series) and the 2011 film ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, alongside a plethora of other films and series.

His latest offering though, Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ is what has got appetites whet with anticipation of just what an amalgamation of the Marvel superheroes Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Hawk Guy and Captain America would be like.

Click here to read more about the Avengers release in Kenya

In the opening scene, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who has been banished from Assgard for his insatiable thirst for power, is in cohoots with the leader of the Chitauri, a forgotten but mystically powerful race of not so good looking aliens (come to think of it, which aliens as depicted really are?), bent on conquering earth and retrieving the Tesseract: a vital energy source that would be instrumental in linking the realms of Earth and that of the Chitauri.

What was worrying however was how exactly the director would succeed in fusing the strong personalities particularly of Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk, maintaining them on the same side of what would nonetheless be an epic battle in all proportions. Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) does not disappoint with his effortless sarcasm and self assurance, as does Chris Hemsworth (Thor) with enchanting early century prose, gallantry and a perfunctory stamp on duty and chivalry.

Romance was virtually non-existent in the film, aside from the chemistry that Downey and Paltrow (Pepper Potts) clearly maintain. The affection that drew Thor to Earth in the first place, in the embodiment of human Jane Foster is notably absent, but I assume that is because the god of Thunder had other pressing matters, such as the rebellion of his borther Loki, to attend to. There are brief references to her though, but not as strikingly evident as Mr. and Mrs. Stark.

Humour with a tad bit of both dry and hearty laughs placed the icing on the Avenger cake, particularly with the Incredible Hulk and his abandon love for destruction and ‘smashing things’ minced with an array of the other characters having their moments. Although Johansson (Black Widow) was a late and final casting, the feminine and sensual touch she adds to the power team did not go un-noticed, as she whimsically obtained the necessary information for S.H.I.E.L.D and associates.

Now, S.H.I.E.L.D is like some super duper FBI agency that has a firm grip on world intelligence coupled with a flying machine called the Hellicarrier. The leader of this agency, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is according to Whedon’s adaptation, responsible for the assembly of the Avengers to help foil Loki’s dasterdly deeds.

If there’s a next level of ‘action’, then that’s what should be slapped on to ‘The Avengers’, as we’re altruistically taken through belt-buckling and titanic confrontations, battles and escapes as the war between Loki’s ‘possessed’ henchmen together with the Chitauri, team up against Earth’s mightiest heroes as they seek to destroy and colonize.

The Avengers is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America

The film opened on Friday and is showing at IMAX XX Century and Fox Cineplex Sarit Centre.

Gait and DK: We have no beef

There have been lots of speculations that talented gospel artistes Jimmy Gait and DK of the hit single ‘Furi furi dance’ were not seeing

each other eye to eye due to ownership rights of the song.

Word out was that they both claimed ownership to ‘furi furi dance’ which almost spoilt their friendship.

The two artistes categorically stated that they don’t have any beef, and that all those speculations in the media were just rumours.

In an interview on Tukuza, Jimmy and DK thanked their fans for voting ‘Furi furi dance’ as the best Groove song of the year.

DK thanked Jimmy Gait whom he refers to as his big brother for his massive support and also for showing him the right direction.

Kuwa mwenyeinchi sio mwanainchi

Kenyans have been crying for long due to bad governance by our political elite, forcing people to ask themselves

the difference between them and the rich (politicians).

Of late there has been an argument on social media between ‘mwanainchi and mwenyeinchi’.

We are the employers of the political class and that makes us the ‘wenyeinchi’. All the flashy cars they role with belongs to us. Let’s unite as a country and sing to Erick’s song ‘Daima Mkenya’ as we take charge of our beloved country Kenya.

Avril Turns How Old Today?

Kenyan super sensational songstress Avril (real name Judith Nyambura Mwangi) is celebrating her birthday today, even as she crosses increasingly more major milestones in her life and career.

Avril was born on April 30th, 2012 1986 and grew up in Nakuru county but studied in both Kenya and Uganda for her earlier years of school. She participated in a variety of school competitions in poetry and drama while still in elementary and high school where she developed a love for the craft she excels in today.

International artistes reap big from royalties paid by MCSK

It was a sad day for Kenyan artistes when MCSK director Maurice Okoth revealed that 80% of all royalties was awarded to international musicians.

The director urged the local media to air more of Kenyan music than international one so that our own could benefit more as there is much local talent in the music industry.

Word has is that the biggest local artistes who benefited from the royalties are Fadhili Williams, Safari Sound Band, Wyre, MOG, Abbas Kubaff, Daddy Owen, Betty Bayo and Ukoo Flani Mau Mau.

We hope with this kind of rewarding, most artistes will be motivated to produce quality staff that will impress the people.

I can finally put pen to paper after confirmimng that indeed Camp Mulla has just penned a deal giving Safaricom rights to the instrumentals to their club-banger “Party Don’t Stop”. Details from Vibe Weekly claim that Safaricom -one of the biggest companies in the entire Eastern African region- has purchased said rights for MILLIONS! In the immortal words of Charlie Sheen, “Winning!”

CAMPMULLA

Camp Mulla aren’t the only ones harvesting from their hard work& good tidings, according to Zuqka, Redsan, Kenya’s living legend has also inked a deal with a New York based company UrFilez through their imprint Rapidcom to distribute his music kinda like iTunes. Actually these guys are in direct competition with iTunes and they’ve also signed Jay-Z &Beyonce. And incase you don’t see the big deal with Redsan’s deal, He’s the only African artist thus far to sign the deal with these guys!

Big things for Kenya’s &Africa’s entertainment acts! It seems these guys are on Charlie Sheens #TeamWinning!

DJ Soxxy Launches Event for the Non-Alcoholics

DJ Soxxy and DJ Celeb will host an event dubbed ‘The Lounge’ at Petma restaurant located in Kenwood House on Kimathi Street.

The event is meant to act as a haven for people who are avoiding the Friday night traffic but don’t want to go to a pub or bar. It will feature live accoustic versions of popular songs as the musicians do their best on stage backed by a live band.

The Lounge is for people who are looking for what they call ‘alternative entertainment’.

‘This event is on every Friday and the theme changes to avoid monotony’, Soxxy told the Nairobi Star. BMF are the headliners and charges are only Kshs. 300.

US president Obama shifts to entertainment industry

Our president Mwai Kibaki has been the most hilarious president in Africa especially when his giving out his unwritten speeches. We are accustomed to his ‘pale pale, Yule Yule and kumbafu’, but US president Barrack Obama is also not left out.

The US president decided to sing while giving out his speech on student’s loans. The son of Luo land decided to slow jam when Jimmy Fallon hosted him on Late night with Jimmy Fallon show. I think Hon. Kajwang is his tutor and that is why Obama is incredibly good.

What’s your take on Obama’s style of campaigning?

Emmy Kosgey’s big heart

She has revolutionized the gospel music industry with her well crafted songs proving that language is never a barrier.

Emmy Kosgey has been releasing hit after hit, but the best part is that whatever she gets from her music she gives it back to the society.

emmy kosgey2

She has set a children home at Eldoret where the Groove party tour popped in to say hallo to the lovely kids.

Emmy this is an awesome way of thanking God for the blessing he has showered unto you.

The leaders of the cool kids

Just who are the leaders of the cool kids? For those of us not in the know (read too old) the cool kids are the generation XBox. These would be the kids in skinny jeans, multicoloured outfits and swag (sic).

My draft pick for the leaders of the cool kids consists of 3 groups &/or artists who i feel are trailblazing the way for the rest of the otherwise ignored generation in as far as entertainment acts go.

To start us of, i will pick Coola Gang. Who? Well if you’ve had your ear just deep enough to scratch the surface of the musical underground, then you know just who they are. These guys are students at USIU and they are the antithesis of everything the biggest group right now are. These guys are anti “swag” as they believe that their talent should do the talking for them. Their cool factor is the fact that they dare to go against the grain of the mainstream: they’re rebels with a cause! And the best thing about these guys is that they are Nairobi’s best kept secret! They are poised to blow since they have the determination& hardwork ethics combo going on. All the rebels can identify with not just their music but their come-up aswell.

COOLA GANG

The 2nd choice draft pick would be Octopizzo. For those of y’all too lame to know who this is, this is the Kibera bred mc that spits fire everytime he gets infront of a mic; so much so that i believe he has a furnace burning in the pits of his belly! This lad single handedly put Kibera on the map interms of both positivity and rap. When you talk of Octopizzo, Kibera’s finest think Atlas lifting the globe on his shoulders. And his impact on pop culture? “Get that mulla/ buy that ndula!” or “Octopizzo numba nane!” Nuff sed!

octo studio

Camp Mulla. The biggest group out right now would have to be these guys! They are so huge at the moment that established celebs are lining up to get in on some of the camp mulla action. Word has it that even Safaricom are trying to get in on the action… Need i say more?

camp-mulla

So there it is ladies and gentlemen, lads& lasses, i give you the leaders of the cool kids.

Is this rapper dissing Camp Mulla?

Camp Mulla are currently flying high with their brand new single ‘Hold it down’, but there is an upcoming rapper called Khaligraph who is hating on them.

He dissed Camp Mulla when hip hop group Coolagang organized a cypher to talented artistes who did not make it for the Chaguo la teeniez cypher.

In an exclusive interview Coolagang distanced themselves from that issue as they don’t have any beef with Camp Mulla.

What’s your take onm this?

Between these two, who should share the same stage with Sheila Mwanyigha

They are amongst Ugandan’s finest when it comes to showbiz industry. Both of them have hosted Tusker Project Fame, but between

Gaetano Kagwa and Dr. Mitch Egwang, who do you think is fit to host TPF 5 with the beautiful Kenyan radio presenter Sheila Mwanyigha?

sheila-mwanyigha-avantgarde 004

                                    Sheila Mwanyigha

Gaetano used to bring drama in TPF together with Judge Ian and due to this you wouldn’t have missed to watch the performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Mich is the romantic guy whom ladies love to watch especially when he surprised Sheila with a flower on national television in one of TPF 4’s episode. I think any lady would love a gentleman like him.

I think Gaetano is the most suitable one, but who do you prefer?

10 Tips To Improve Your Recordings

Whether you are recording in a home studio or paying for a state-of-the-art experience, you must prepare. Way too often, artists/bands go into the recording process thinking they know everything. Shutup, sit down and read. It could save you money and time, and be the defining moment in understanding how to pursue your next project.

1. Make SURE you have all the vocals and recording parts practiced and ready to record. Don’t waste any one’s valuable time, especially your own!

2. Sleep well, don’t get wasted the night before and make sure to eat a nutritious meal before you embark on the journey of recording.

3. Make an intelligent and informed decision on who will engineer your record. Hear music they have previously worked on and let them hear your demos before starting any project.

4. Bring extra guitar strings, tuners, drum heads, ¼ cables and anything else you may need extra of.

5. Stay hydrated, no cold drinks, dairy, sodas or coffees. Also (especially the night before and day of) avoid spicy, salty and overly fatty foods. Ironically, green vegetables can make you gassy and uncomfortable when you are going to sing. Good foods for vocal performance include; Apples, almonds, proteins such as fish and chicken and honey (avoid tea if possible).

6. If you have ear fatigue, take a break or come back to the song another day. You may not necessarily recognize aspects of your recording, as distinctly as you would with fresh ears. This can develop into issues, which would possibly lead to more studio time fixing them!

7. Do not over-produce. With the technology available nowadays, it’s easy to drown your song with tracks on top of tracks. Often times, songs get lost in a sea of instrumentation. If you have a song that’s a hit on the acoustic guitar, you may not necessarily want to add 14 violins, a techno drum beat and your choir from Sunday worship.

8. Get your recording RIGHT. Don’t assume studio effects (i.e. auto-tune) will fix everything. Often times your recording will sound scattered and unprofessional. Make sure your instruments are tuned, and vocals warmed up!

9. SAVE every few minutes and create backups of EVERYTHING. I cannot stress how important these steps are.

10. Get honest, constructive feedback and listen to your mixes on multiple stereos (car, house, friend’s place etc).
