From Nairobi to Jo’burg and Lisbon, Take A Peek Into Urban Club Culture

If you want to discover how dance music in Nairobi in the ’60s, how Kwaito started in Johannesburg, how Naija developed in Lagos, the influence of Angola music on Lisbon’s dance music, how clubs look like in Berlin and Kiev and how producers distribute their music in the UK, then this where you need to be this evening.

Today from 6.00 p.m., the Goethe-Institut will host a talk with the writers and researchers from the cities that have participated in the TEN CITIES project. Besides the music production module, TEN CITIES also incorporates a book project involving 20 authors from the participating cities. It explores the history of club cultures and its sub-cultures in those ten cities.

For the first time in Kenya, the International Jazz Day brings together more than 8 Kenyan Jazz bands, Kenyan jazz enthusiasts, the international Community and corporate partners in celebrating Jazz in Kenya.

Renowned Kenyan Jazz musicians like Parseen Edward, Chris Bittok, Don Ouko and Joseph Hellon among other jazz musicians will be in action tonight at Tree House Club from 6.30PM.

Tickets are KSh1000 and will be sold at the door.

Dennis Itumbi Reveals How He & Dennis Onsarigo Hustled At Kencom For Cash

Behind every successful person there is a rags-to-riches story that somehow propelled them to where they are currently. And that’s no different to renowned blogger/journalist Dennis Itumbi and his long-time room-mate Dennis Onsarigo, currently an investigative reporter at KTN.

Apart from sharing a first name, the two have come a long way to what they are today. Last evening, Dennis (Itumbi) revealed how he and Onsarigo one time had to stage a skit at Kencom bus stage to get cash having spent the entire day looking for jobs. Itumbi shared this story to encourage everyone out there to remain focused in whatever they do no matter what they are going through.

dennis_onsarigo.jpg

Dennis Onsarigo

Here’s the story;

So I remember this evening, we had searched for a job all day with my long time room-mate and friend @Dennis Onsarigo and we had 18 bob left between us, meant we walk to South B…since we were to walk anyway, we got into a cyber and Onsarigo introduced me to email…yahoo.com…my first two emails usiniemail and usireplymaemail….then we got at Kencom and we decided to stage a show about 666 and relayed issues we made good cash….whatever u do, whatever you ate going through now my encouragement is remain focused…review ur dream if necessary, Onsarigo wanted to own an investigative series, which he does now, but he had to review his entry into media, he got on as a contract by contract Cameraman, once in he worked his way to his dream..but crucially write it down, otherwise its just fantasy….

This is The Man Who Handles President Uhuru’s FB & Twitter Accounts

Most people actually think that blogger/journalist Dennis Itumbi is the one who opened and runs both Facebook and Twitter accounts for President Uhuru Kenyatta. Well, it’s time the speculations ended because am about to tell you who the real handler of the President’s social media is.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Machel Waikenda! Machel is not new in showbiz as he is the owner of Blackstar Entertainment. For those of you who have been living under the rock, Blackstar Entertainment is a company comprised of a DJ unit called the Flava Unit Dj’s, an events co-ordination unit called Blackstar Events and a film department unit called Blackstar Films. Now that we are on the same page, Machel is TNA’s Director of Communications and Secretary of Arts and Entertainment, which explains why he handles the President’s social media.

Machel_Rev_Jesse_Jackson.png

Machel with Rev. Jesse Jackson

Born on April 23rd 1981 Machel holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix, bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida and a Diploma of Arts from Santa Fe College. Machel also holds a certificate from the iHUB M-Lab: Africa’s first mobile incubation digital hub. He is a commercial pilot, former Kenya airways employee with over 2000 hours on the Boeing 737 and 767 Jets.

Machel began his career as a pilot trainee in Kenya airways in 2005 and was promoted to be a first Officer (FO) six months later. After flying the Boeing 737 and 767 jets for 5 years, Machel quit his lucrative flying career to concentrate on his entrepreneurial endeavors. He decided to focus on the company that he founded in 2006 called Blackstar Entertainment where he sits on the board of directors.

Here are some interesting facts about Machel;

  • He once cleaned toilets, bagged goods and even sold magazines on the phone – all this to pay for his college education.
  • He gave up his job as a pilot to follow his passion. He started President Uhuru Kenyatta’s FB page and Twitter accounts.

Find out HERE how Machel played a pivot role in TNA’s win in last month’s General Elections.

CCK Threatens To Shut Down Citizen TV Transmitters

In February this year, the ICT sector regulator, Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) clamped down on Royal Media Services (RMS) shutting down 17 broadcast transmitters in four different locations (check that out HERE)

RMS then filed a lawsuit against CCK but the High Court threw it out (read about that HERE). Once again, the SK Macharia-owned media house has been warned by CCK that it risks having 7 of its broadcast transmitters shut down.

The regulator put a public notice on unauthorised use of frequencies by Citizen TV in Nanyuki, Menengai hill, Narok, Maili nne in Nyahururu, Kilifi, Kitui and Mwingi. CCK has given 30 days to the company to stop using the frequencies or it will take the measures at its disposal. Director general Francis Wangusi said on the phone the seven transmitters are new discoveries made in its recent audit.

“We will use our regulatory power to shut down these transmitters,” he said. The self-allocated frequencies, according to Wangusi, are on the reserved guard bands. A guard band is an unused part of the radio/TV spectrum between allocated bands, for the purpose of preventing interference.
So even if RMS rightly applied for the frequencies, they are not available for allocation to any operator.

According to the Kenya Information and Communications act, Cap 411A, operation of radio services without a licence is an offense that attracts a fine of Sh5 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both.

Find Out Why Facebook CEO Will Now Earn Just 85/- A Year As Salary

As the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg is expected to take home a hefty salary every end month (like today) but no, he will not be taking home any millions. According to Huffingpost, the Facebook CEO will not receive any bonuses; in fact he will be taking a huge pay cut.

This means Zuckerberg, will be joining the $1 (KSh85) salary club. It has become sort of a CEO tradition to cut their salary to $1 once their company is highly successful.  You may ask how he will survive on a paltry 85 bob. Well, It just was announced last Friday that Zuckerberg made $2.3 billion when he cashed out 60 million stock options in 2012. Last year he made $500,000 and got a $266,101 bonus.

Steve Jobs famously took a $1 salary from the time he returned to Apple as CEO in 1998; he didn’t take any stock grants after 2003, either. In 2005, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, along with then-CEO Eric Schmidt, all reduced their salaries to $1. Schmidt, now executive chairman, takes a salary of several million dollars these days; Page, now CEO, and Brin still make $1.

Condom Advert Causes A Stir Once Again

Just when you thought that the whole uproar surrounding condom advertisement was over, yet disquiet arises from the Church over a controversial condom campaign. If you’ve been keen enough, am sure you have seen a huge billboard at the Museum Hill overpass with the message, “We believe in God. We believe that sex is sacred. We believe in caring for each other. We believe in using condoms.”

Well, a Catholic archbishop has disowned the weeklong adverts by an American group supporting the use of condoms. Nyeri Archbishop Peter Kairu said he had read the message of the group —Catholics for Choice, but did not endorse it.

“I don’t agree with them and I say we continue living according to our faith as the Bible teaches us to respect each other,” Archbishop Kairo said after Sunday Mass and a ceremony to open the Vicar’s residence at the proposed Kagicha Parish in Nyeri South District.

The soft-spoken archbishop who usually avoids the limelight said the teachings of the bible were very clear about birth control and “I urge you all to follow the faith.” Catholics for Choice has been running full-page advertisement in a section of the media proclaiming that “Good Catholics use condoms.”

The billboard at Museum Hill overpass

The organisation gives an American address in Washington DC in the website provided on the advertisement which has been running for the past one week.

According to the website, the advertising campaign in the US, Mexico, the Philippines, South Africa, Kenya, Chile and Zimbabwe is the first phase of an effort to change the Vatican’s policy and challenge its aggressive lobbying against condoms in areas of the world most at risk.

“It is important that Catholics and non-Catholics alike make their voices heard on this important health question,” says the organisation in one of its preambles on the website.

Last month, THIS TV commercial was criticized by the clergy for being immoral and was even stopped from airing.

The Tale of A Deadly Gangster Who Called Ghetto Radio Shortly Before His Death

If you watched the investigative piece by KTN’s Mohammed Ali posted on this site, you should have an idea of what am talking about. In the appalling piece, is a story of a young man who gets gunned down by an elite police group but not before he calls Ghetto Radio.

This is how it goes; Stevo Kijana was a 22 year old gangster and was involved in a fierce shoot-out with cops in broad day light in Buruburu estate. As he tried to escape, he shot a police officer and took his pistol. It then happened that he found himself at Buruburu Police Station much to his dismay as the police gave chase. He then jumped a wall into some estate in Buruburu. Stevo Kijana then went and knocked on a door and some dude peeped through the window and asked him what he wanted. Stevo explained to this guy but instead of giving him refuge readily, he went to the balcony and snitched on him to the cops.

Stevo managed to enter the house but the occupants left. Soon the house was surrounded by cops who started shooting, all with one agenda: KILLING Stevo Kijana. With no option left, Stevo figured out that this was his end. He then called Ghetto Radio and talked to Roba. He told Roba (live on air) that he was marooned in a house in Buruburu and that cops had surrounded it and wanted to kill him. Stevo kijana wanted to surrender.

Here’s how the conversation went;

Roba: Sema, unaitwaje (Hi, what’s your name?)

Stevo: Mimi ni Stevo. Niko hapa Buru kwa keja fulani na masanse wameni surround na wanataka kunidedisha. (Am Stevo. Am here in Buruburu in a certain house and cops have surrounded me and want me dead)

Roba: Uko na weapon? (Do you have a weapon?)

Stevo: Niko na weapon ya sanse mmoja nili shoot na nikapokonya weapon yake. Manze Roba show hao masanse mimi nataka ku surrender. (I have a weapon from one cop I shot and took his gun. Please Roba ask those cops I want to surrender)

Roba: Wacha ni try vile naweza do. (Let me see what I can do)

Stevo: Roba jo, harakisha wamejazana apa (Roba please hurry up they are so many here).

Sooner than later Recee cops had arrived and in a space of 4 minutes Stevo Kijana was no more.

Why Uncle Chim Tuna Feels That This Year Will Be Willy Paul’s!

The Groove awards are coming up and if you are either into gospel or you’re just into Kenyan entertainment news, then i know you know it’s a pretty huge deal. Not just in Kenya but in greater East

Africa.

Groove awards is the premiere gospel award ceremony. With that said and done, we were having a conversation at the office sometime last week about who we feel will carry the day. Personally, I feel Willy Paul will. And what do you know, Jeff Omondi agreed!

Why does Uncle Chim Tuna feel that his nephew will route the competition resoundingly? Well, last year was a Willy Paul year. From topping charts to controversy -which he not only surmounted but thrived from.

Last year, Willy Paul gave us chart toppers such as this one:

{youtube}a4N5-o9kZCc{/youtube}

And when a sex scandal erupted allegedly involving him and Pendo which you can read about here………….. he did the unthinkable for a gospel artist, he survived. He thrived. He has songs out after that scandal, Pendo still doesn’t have even a single song out.

Pendo Hits Out at Willy Paul!
As Pusha-T raps, “After surviving everything I have survived, I know I’m forgiven!” And this lad seems to walk with angels! this year will be Willy Paul’s! Watch the video of Willy and Pendo squashing there beef at the Ghafla offices.

Is This The End Of Robert Alai? Dennis Itumbi Sues Robert Alai And Wins! Alai Might Have To Auction his Property To Pay Up!

A while back, we let you know that Dennis Itumbi was suing Robert Alai aye? Well, that court case is done and dusted and Dennis Itumbi has managed to teach Robert Alai a thing or two about irresponsible speech regarding other individuals!

The law suit stems from a tweet Alai made alleging that Dennis Itumbi had authored (read forged) the
“U.K Dossier”. Robert Alai who is known for his wanton venomous twitter tirades and attacks on individuals –such as myself– now might just have to pay Dennis itumbi for any damages he may have suffered as a result. On July 2nd there will be a hearing to prove worth.

Robert_Alai.jpg

<The photo Robert Alai alleged was of me>

When i heard this story, I contacted Dennis Itumbi and this is what he had to say:

“The matter is still in court. Let the process end.”

At the core of the matter, the issue is, Robert Alai was served with notice but neglected to file a response for the last 8 months. According to my source who happens to be in the legal fraternity, Dennis Itumbi therefore asked for judgement and it was handed in his favour.

And when you hear the nitty gritties of the case, you cannot help but be astounded by the douchebag behaviour displayed by Alai who was simply asked for an apology to settle the matter but he refused ergo the move by Dennis Itumbi to go to court. And when in court, he couldn’t substantiate his allegations even after asserting that he could.

Robert Alai Finally Finds A Real Job

And this is actually a legal landmark. It has set a precedence in defamation cases. it’s the first to be concluded by the Kenyan Judiciary. My friend whom I will not mention has whispered that Dennis Itumbi could be handed as much as…

As much as…

40 MILLION KENYA SHILLINGS!

Alai will either pay or have his property auctioned. And this is a warning to all you Subaru tweeting pseudo-intellectuals quick to take jibes at people without substantiating what you claim…Social media isn’t no man’s land! The long arm of the law will catch up to you! Uncle Chim Tuna Obiajulu has spoken!

5 Types Groups Of People To Be Found In Any Nairobi Club

In Nairobi, it’s easy to tell the type of people you will meet at the club. It’s like they have been typecast for a role at the club. I’m a man who loves to study humanity and the club is my library. I have fun studying the types of people to be found in any Kenyan club. Have a read and enjoy Uncle Chim Tuna’s food for thought!

#1. Old geezers
The 27-35year olds at the club. This is the lot with newly acquired cars -something rather commendable- and beer bellies. They are loud and belligerent. They want the whole world to acknowledge their new found success… Sorry, they want the lasses to acknowledge their newfound success. This lot never dresses up (their generation grew up thinking going out dressed like a goat herd is ok) and they throw money around.

They should be at home building families but they are often found at the club with silly Nairobi girls who get flush over cash.

#2. Expatriates
This crowd can be divided into 2: The old father Abraham types that are out prowling for ladies of the night. The sleezy type you’ll find in Malindi or top hotels in Nairobi like The Stanley.

And the younger lot which will either be out with their girlfriend who will invariably be the ethnic African girl or a white lass. They generally keep to themselves.

Then their is the lot attracted to skinny girls with big weaves, loud make-up and even louder fake accents.

#3. The high school kid

How can you tell this chap is straight from high school? They think wearing skinny jeans is cool, keep shouting “Swaggie!” and they dance ALL night long. They are fun to watch till they get drunk which they inevitably do. They cannot handle their liquor. This is the sloppy drunk lot either throwing up or passed out by midnight.

#4. The ob
This is the ratchet looking chap who mean mugs everyone. He thinks looking angry is macho and they walk in small tight knit groups… Sort of like hyenas. They always start fights so they can rob or stand at the fringes of a fight to look for an opportunity to steal. They are not to be engaged. Just call the bouncers to deal with them. then again, if you are in a club that let them in, you are clearly doing something wrong!

#5. Lipstick lesbians
This is the ratchet lass and her pal who think kissing is really cool. They kiss rather coyly then look around the club to see whether anyone has noticed them. Or they dance seductively together asthough they are about to rip each others clothes on then pause suddenly and look around the club. The right word for this lot is attention seekers.

Don’t agree with my opinion? Good, let me know on the comment section.

Santa Fe, The Only Plan Worth Your Night!

Santa Fe is the place to be tonight! Why? Well, because team Ghafla will be there. I’m just kidding, seriously though, because they have the best music and prices. Yeah, they honestly do!

And if the prices aren’t enough to sway you, well then, there’s the fact that the joint is classy. I promise you that you will not have to endure drunk children or the ob type of character here. Straight grown and sexy folk who have no problem mingling.

And the music? Whoo! Yeah, like Pusha-T I’m on my Ric Flair tip! Whoo! The music will have you dancing all night! Nothing but the freshest Afro, Pop, Electro and yeah, hiphop courtesy of DJ Bash, the numeral uno party DJ!

62310_556443347713108_234571358_n.jpg

Now back to the prices:
Shots are retailing at 100/- and whiskey shots at 150/-! That means Jack Daniels shots and Johnnie Walker while vodka and tequila shots are 100/-.

NaxVegas: Why Nakuru Is The Rave Capital Of Kenya!

It’s no secret that Nax is the most happening time when it comes to partying. Nax is just too much heat! And last year I wondered why. Well, this year, I believe I know the answer to that.

The charm that NaxVegas holds is in it’s secrecy. Nax promises the real ravers in Kenya (Nairobi folk) the promise of anonymity. It holds the promise of pure uninhibited fun and when Nairobi folk feel they don’t have to face the repercussions of their actions, the go wild!

The most banging parties are held in Nax. The most wicked raves are in Nax. The sickest bashes are in Nax! take Smirnoff Experience for instance. At Smirnoff Experience, I could recognize a good chunk of the crowd because they are familiar faces in Nairobi’s rave scene (Nairobi is so much smaller than Lagos or Enugu) so everyone knows everyone.

Smirnoff Experience in all honesty was carried by the Nairobi crowd. Nairobians party harder! They go all out when they want to party!

But if you ask me, the realest aspect of partying in Nax is the fact that everyone forgets more than their inhibitions, they forget their pretence. Nairobi folk are a peculiar crowd… There are the uppity stuffy lot that wants to only be seen where the uppity folk hang out. Then there is the K.C (Kenyan Cowboy) lot. The unbelievably wealthy ranchers who like bundu bashing or hanging out in dingy spots in Karen or (shockingly) Molly’s. Then there is the middle class kids lot that wants to party at Offroad. Why d’you think that joint gets full even when the sewer bursts? Bleurgh!

And finally there is the ratchet lot which I have been studying of late. But Nakuru is just one big melting pot for all this Nairobi lot.

For Those Who Think Ghafla! Is For Hustlers And Sufferers, Read This

So my friend Martin Neilsen(pictured) from Mdundo.com posited the other day that Ghafla’s audience is made up of hustlers.

Of course after hearing that, I was aghast! However, before I could catch my lost breaths, I was called aside without taking the opportunity to negate this accusation Mr. Neilsen had hurled Ghafla’s way! After taking some moments later to ponder why Martin may have thought such an unspeakable thing, I realised that perhaps it was not just him who may have this misconception. Alas! There are others who have hinted to me that Ghafla! is not in a ‘preferred demographic.’ So for Martin, and all the others, I present to you:

Erykah Badu, international neo soul artist, and a Ghafla! reader:

Missed The Latest Investigative Piece By Mohammed Ali? Watch It Here (video)

After revealing to you how a former grave robber (now a Pastor) used to read only the obituary section in the Dailies to identify his next “clients”, KTN’s Mohammed Ali is back with yet another intriguing piece on Korogocho slums.

Apparently, the slum is one of the most feared for having the highest number of young robbers (between 16 and 22). Having devised new ways of robbery, they steal and kill the victim even after getting robbing you clean.

The slum has gone into history books for producing the youngest and toughest robber who exchanged fire with cops for four straight hours before being fell. Watch the video below;

Jua Cali, Mejja and DNA Give Stunning Performance At The COPA 2013 Launch (Photos)

Last weekend as the rest of Nairobi moved to Nakuru and Mombasa for Smirnoff’s ‘The Night’ and rugby tournament respectively, those who stayed behind also had something to smile about courtesy of Coca Cola.

The COPA Coca-Cola 2013 games kicked off last Saturday at the City Stadium with stunning performances by guest artistes Jua Cali, DNA and Mejja. The three artistes gave a high energy performance to the fans that came out in huge numbers. They interacted with the crowd during the show where fans sang along and danced to their popular songs.

The dancers that accompanied the artistes also added to the climax of the event as they entertained the crowd with their dancing that livened up the event further. Popular comedian Kazungu Matano also known as “Otoyo” was also on ground as the events MC where he kept the crowd laughing with his antics.

Besides the matches, there were also loads of fun engaging activities such as foosball, pool ball gaming, photo booths for instant pictures, football tricksters and penalty shoot outs with prize giveaways for the fans.

Take a look;

Pawa 254 And PAK Calls All Photographers!

Hey you, yes you, are you free this very instance?

Do you like to take photographs because moments are better savoured when captured in ‘film’? Then this is the just the event for you. Well it’s not really an event, it’s.. okay I’m out of descriptive words. This event is organized by Photographers Association of Kenya! It’s happening now till 5 pm so hurry!

Basically, it’s an activity that requires you as a photographer to head on there with your camera, and two or three objects you’d like to photograph. Then photograph them in the vicinity, that simple. Here an image by Robert Munuku of PAWA 254 taken with a phone.

So what you waiting for, dash there! Pawa254 is on Statehouse road, on that road that is next to All Saints cathedral. I’m not sure if it’s Kenyatta avenue.

When you get to Statehouse road, walk up, take the first right turn which is statehouse crescent, there’s a church there, MIlimani AIC i think.  Walk up to Ethiopian consulate, and take the first right turn. You should see a couple of cars packed there. Take that turn at the end, walk towards a green shop or an ‘eatery’ of sorts, enter the balck gate, YWCA building second floor. Should my directions not help, ask the guards there or use google maps.

POLL RESULTS: Now That Camp Mulla Are Breaking Up, Which Member Do You Think Will Make It As A Solo Artist?

last week i sought to find out which Camp Mulla member Kenyans felt would be able to not just survive but flourish now that the group has announced that they are indeed pursuing solo projects and the response was overwhelming!

Kenyans voted and i’m happy to say that I have the results. and with that said, and without further ado, I present to you the results:

Kus Ma
Votes: 25

14.5%

Miss Karun
Votes: 48

27.7%

Shapaman
Votes: 24

13.9%

Taio Tripper
Votes: 76

43.9%

Kenyans seem to think Taio Tripper has what it takes to flourish as a solo artist. And what an overwhelming margin!

Remember The High School Thespian Who Thrilled President Uhuru Kenyatta? Jaguar Has Paid His School Fees!

The internets have dubbed him “Otonglo man”. He is the high school thespian who acted in a play called “Otonglo Time”. he is the lad who entertained the president and countless others who had turned up to watch him perform. He quite literally stole the show.

But what many didn’t know is that he was struggling to stay in school. He couldn’t afford the fees. But all that has now been taken care of. But before we go there, I want to commend Dennis Itumbi for taking the initiative to raise money for his school fees.

But Jaguar has swooped in to  save the day. Literally! He has paid the lad’s school fees for one term, and others chipped in to pay for the rest of his time in high school! Watch the video of his performance below:

How Smirnoff Brought The Night To Life in Nakuru (Photos)

Epic!!!; is what best describes what went down last weekend at Nakuru’s RFC Grounds. Despite the drizzling, the party did not stop as revelers turned up in their white attire to complement the glow in the dark with snow white theme and played off the UV-lit dome.

With an astounding line-up of deejays consisting of DJ Joe Mfalme, DJ Mista Dru, DJ Hypnotic, DJ Protégé, DJ Kaydee, DJ Kaytrix, DJ Stretch, DJ Klash, DJ Incredible and DJ Rigz from Nairobi, alongside DJs Saidi, Trixta and V_Era from Nakuru; a stunning VIP section, dazzling ambience and charged crowd, nothing could match up to this. ‘The Night’ was the first time The Night was being held in Nakuru, making it arguably the lakeside town’s biggest party this year.

Since it was Smirnoff’s first outdoor event for 2013, the organizers did not disappoint at all. ‘The Night’ provided an out-of-town treat for non-residents of Nakuru like Nairobians who came in drones. It was also a perfect opportunity for Nakuru residents to host Smirnoff’s inaugural party for 2013.

Take a look at the scenes from the event;

DJ Crème is The Latest Celeb Dad in Town! (Photo)

“There’s a new daddy in town. He’s discipline daddy!” That’s the track that was playing in my head when I got this news. Anyhow, good people, guess what! DJ Crème has just joined the dad’s club.

Last night brought about a bundle of joy to the renowned deejay and entertainer; a bouncing baby boy. The baby, Jamari Njuguna, was welcomed to earth with a flurry of messages wishing him a healthy life ahead. Crème and his wife, Denise were also congratulated for their newborn and wished the very best.
