Photo Gallery: Julie Gichuru’s New, 4-Floor Mansion

By now most of you know who Julie Gichuru is. If you don’t, she is the Queen of Citizen TV’s prime time news and the sexiest TV news anchor as proven by a Ghafla! Poll we did recently here. By the way she is also a staunch christian! But enough of this, here are exclusive photos of her brand NEW mansion (which she is building together with her better half) which is situated next to ISK;

This is the video that kicked out Camp Mulla’s ‘Party don’t stop’ from the number one spot

Every artiste is after the ratings, rankings, call it what you may, but they are after it and it can only be attained by dishing out the best of the best music and videos.

You are only as good as your last work. That can never be more clear right now. Camp Mulla have now been kicked out of the Kenya YouTube Charts list of most viewed music videos of all time.

As we all know by now, getting more than even 700, 000 views on YouTube here in Kenya is a peace of work. Tafadhali Wakenya, tupende mtandao.

So when an artiste gets more than 700, 000 views, the video is definitely hot stuff.

Camp Mulla’s ‘party don’t stop’ has been on the lead on YouTube’s Kenya Charts of most viewed music videos of all time, but now, it has been kicked out by another popular one.

Jaguar’s ‘Kigeugeu’ is now at the top of the list with 789, 429 views.

AMAZING! Rufftone collaborates and shoots a video with the GSU. Check it out

The battle against hate speech, ignorance, arrogance, tribalism, basically everything that contributed to the 07 PEV, is on.

Infact, it has been on since the moment it started back then. Nobody wants to re-live those horrific moments. That is why most artistes have taken it upon themselves to create music that reflects to the society, concerning the choices we make especially during this crucial period of the general elections.

What all the artistes have done for this cause is admirable and we give thanks in return. What Rufftone has done, is amazing. He collaborated with the Kenya GSU, the same people who put their lives on the line to try and curb the PEV, in a song set to show Kenyans just how far we have come from the unfortunate turn of events back in 07.

The GSU police officers actually sing in this track and it is really good.

You just have to see and listen to it for yourself. This is simply amazing. Deep thanks comes from the Ghafla Team for creating time to do this peace of art.

Check out the video below.

Film Review: Django Unchained (Last Chance to Catch It at the Cinemas)

Django Unchained opened at the Starflix Cinemas on 18th January, about three weeks after its U.S. premiere.

As the trailer suggests, the film follows the bounty hunter, Schultz, and Django, the recently freed slave in search of the Brittle brothers and to the rescue of newly free man’s bride, Broomhilda. The film gets right into it, wasting no time with Django’s rescue and freeing and the same scene acts as a viewer’s initiation into the film’s violence.

There are a lot of uncomfortable moments, like the first time a white person says the N* word (about 10 minutes into the film) which you get used to at some point.

The film seems like redemption for Christoph Waltz’s character, Col. Hans Landa on Inglourious Basterds, where he was “charged with rounding up all the Jews in France”–as he described his job description to Monsieur Lapadit in the film’s opening scene–now he is the saviour of the black people. He is almost unnecessarily disturbed by how fellow white people treat slaves. Even Django himself doesn’t flinch at the treatment the way Schultz does.

For a film that illustrates the darkness that was the American slavery era, it’s also pretty hilarious. A good example is a scene where Big Daddy tries to explain to a servant how to treat a free black man and a KKK scene, which almost seems like Tarantino making ammends for using the N* word a too much.

The latter scene reminds me of the faux-history Tarantino used in ‘Basterds in the plot against Hitler. With all the deep issues the film dramatizes, it makes for one of the funnest history lessons you’ll ever encounter. You enjoy the dramatization as you ponder about what was really done after the show is over. The Mandingo fight sequence is one of such scenes.

Frequent Tarantino collaborator, Samuel L. Jackson is classic as usual. His character almost descended into caricature but no one does it better than Tarantino and Jackson, especially together. Probably the only person who would not have caricaturized the character because he is already a caricature.

Leonardo DiCaprio gives the performance of his career. He is fine in most of the parts but he gives everything in a dinner table scene where he explains interracial relationships and goes on to give a faux-biology lesson on slavery in what might just be the year’s best performance by a supporting actor…and what might be the most disturbing bit for black audiences.

Kerry Washington’s Broomhilda might as well have been in a silent film. A character that might go unnoticed is one of Candie’s comfort girls in the town. Concentrating on her loses you some classic lines but she is entertaining to watch.

But one of the best bits about Django Unchained is the music. The film doesn’t really have a score but the music more than makes up for it. It starts of with an appropriate Elvis-like period ballad for Django but somehow, Rick Ross and Tupac songs penetrate the film. This might be the only time you’ll get to hear coke and gangster rap play before Beethoven’s Fur Elise.

The best and worst thing about Tarantino is–thankfully and regrettably–Tarantino himself. His writing and direction is brilliant. His acting is terrible. Thankfully, it doesn’t take anything away from is one of the most enjoyable films I’ve gone out to watch. There are a lot of cheesy scenes, borrowed from period films and Westerns, but they are, unexpectedly, the best parts about the story.

Today is the last day you can catch Django Unchained at Starflix, Prestige and Village Market. Head out there if you want to catch the last year’s finest film before it ends its theatrical run. Check out the times here.

Papa Shirandula’s Kawira shows us what she’s all about in this video

After gorgeous Kawira shared with us her best photo due to public demand, it is without a doubt that she was born for the screens.

Don’t you just love it when Kawira steps on set and acts out her heart? How splendid she does it? Nairobi Half Life missed this one. Guess they just didn’t know where to look.

How Getrude Mungai Got Into The Sex Auntie Business

TV-star Getrude never planned on being a sex-anything. Her career as a ‘lifestyle designer on sex and relationships started quite by chance.

“After the birth of my first son in 1999, I quit my job as a secretary to become a full-time mom. But my hubby, Peter, had employed two helpers for me – one for the baby and one for the house – so I was free most of the time. I became especially idle when my baby decided to quit breasfeeding after only four months. Being a food enthusiast, I decided to start a small catering business.” She started off catering for small parties and events. As word spread – “I give a Swahili twist to everything I cook!” – she was asked to cater for bridal showers.

At one bridal shower, she joined the party. “As I listened to the women talking, I noticed that most of them didn’t have positive things to say about marriage. I could see by the look on her face that the bride was getting scared, so I started a game where for every two negative things, we would say one positive thing. To my surprise, the ladies seemed to enjoy it, and we were soon laughing our heads off.”

The women enjoyed it so much that the next time one of them had a bridal shower, they invited Getrude to not only do the catering, but to play ‘the game.’ After the game, Getrude found herself answering a lot of questions about marriage and sex. Her new career was born. She was a sex auntie.

“I realised that I had quite a lot of information to give because growing up at the Coast, I had a somo who taught me about marriage and sex. Basically, a somo is an older woman who teaches a girl how to be attractive, how to treat a man, how to seduce him with delicious food… how to give him the personal touch. “Having a somo is the greatest things and it is common practice at the coast,” she says. Her grandmother, who brought her up, also gave her sex and relationship advice.

Of course, Getrude was no expert on sex and she admits that “some of the questions were hard.” At one of the bridal showers, a medical doctor challenged something Getrude had said. “I was only teaching from my coastal knowledge, but when this woman challenged me, I knew I had to do much more. Getrude started researching the topic, and discussed sex with her husband, other women, doctors, older people, divorced people, teachers – anyone who she thought might add to her knowledge.

Getrude’s hard work paid off, and she started charging for her sex-auntie services. But her career only really took off after Daily Nation did a story on her in 2005. “All of a sudden, many people knew what I did. Most were excited that finally there was a sex auntie in Kenya. Others were not so happy about it. But people at the coast were wondering what all the hype was about. It was a confusing time for me… my public life just blew up.”

And the most viewed music video this month is…

It’s a new year and the artistes are not sitting on their talents at all. A lot of hot music has been released over the past few weeks. Some have changed their style, some their flow, and some, well, same old same old.

Still, old is gold. That may be the explanation for the the position that this song has taken on the Kenya YouTube Charts. Jua Cali is no stranger to all of us. Neither is Sanaipei Tande.

Think of all the new music that have come out this month. Yes all the hot videos and beats, choreography and hype… and the most viewed video of the month is… drum rolls… Geti Kali by Jua Cali and Sana (Sanaipei Tande).

The video is actually very good, I have to say.

Socialite Catfight! Huddah Monroe Involved In Fight With Fellow Socialite!

Kenya’s Kim K and Shee Wauinge (who was a one time Safaricom queen of Facebook) are currently embroiled in one of the ugliest tweefs i have ever seen since Kenyans on Twitter took on Kola Boof!

And this is truly a no holds barred kind of tweef with family member being brought up! For those of you who don’t know, Shee Waruinge had a young one who unfortunately died but that hasn’t stopped Huddah from bringing the child up.  But Shee isn’t innocent either; she has brought up Huddah’s father into their drama.

To be honest that was in poor taste but they both had some gems to drop on the other with Huddah mocking Shee’s forehead saying: “Forehead so big you can’t even hide it with 20weaves!”

And Shee mocking Huddah’s grammar: “Noticed. LOL RT : LMFAOOO! RT : Huddah reserves her best grammar for tweefs”

The insults came pretty fast and were rather nasty but that all comes with the territory for these soc

ialites.

Huddah also said, “ ,I suppose that’s how u got pregnant and ur baby daddy ran away! I don’t blame ur bitterness. You are a DESPERATE housewife!” as a response to:

Remember, having sex in the car with the seat belt on doesn’t guarantee safe sex! Dumb s**t!”

Talk about kid gloves coming off!

“Get ur hair right,ur p***y clean and then get back at me!-

You claim your m.p’s give u cash after sex yeah? Get a B**b job and a diploma.”

“Get ur hair right,ur p**y clean and then get back at me!-

And then there was this:

Kidis’s remix to ‘twajichanganya’ becomes the most watched video just two days after release

After seeing the hits that this new video has on YouTube, and as I was typing up this article, I somehow had it in my head that this video has now lasted a week on-line.

Turns out that it has been up for only two days so far and it already has 3, 482 hits/views.

According to the Kenya YouTube Charts, Kidis’ ‘Twajichanganya’ remix feat DNA, Ameleena and Wyre is now the most viewed music video this week.

Now if that isn’t impressive, I don’t know what is.

Grandpa Records are really taking over. Slow but sure. Definitely topping charts with this one. No doubt.

Just incase you haven’t seen it yet, check it out below.

CRUEL: This is how the Nyayo Stadium event organizers cancelled the World Cry Peace Concert

After waiting for a month and a half for the World Cry Peace Concert that was set to bring two huge Jamaican artistes to Kenya, the show gets postponed.

It would have been just two weeks before the concert takes place but unfortunately the Nyayo Stadium event organizers messed up the splendid arrangements that the Big Tunes Live had established, by double booking.

How one would book for two huge events on the same day and same venue, we really don’t understand. But what’s done is done.

The Jah Cure and Duane Stephenson concert has been postponed. The new date for the concert has not been announced yet but will be available on Ghafla as soon as it’s out.

We just found out how the Nyayo Stadium crew alerted the Big Tunes Live event organizers about the unavailability of the venue and we have to say that this is just cruel and unprofessional.

This is what they sent Big Tunes, through a text message.
“16th February 2013 will not be available to host your event at Nyayo Stadium. Apology for any inconvenience cost.”

Discovery and distribution forms the backbone our vision for a solution focused on a) ease of use b) mobile.

Access to the content is through downloads, streaming and payments are via mobile money as well as major credit cards. Waabeh has over 1,000 tracks of music, podcasts and audio books from our partnerships with artists, publishers and local record companies. It is spreading beyond our borders to East and Central Africa by mid this year.

Waabeh’s unique partnership with Intel allowed an accelerated development of a cool Android app which is only available for the Yolo Smartphone over the next three months on the Android play store. Additionally, it comes with almost 100 tracks of local music, audio books and podcasts available for download. The app will then be available and open to all other Android devices.

The four-person Waabeh team (Tim, King, Jeff and Ciku) bring a combined 25 years in development, system design, music business and most importantly, a love for solving Africa’s problems using technology.

Ghafla Exclusive: Top Radio Personality Quits One FM!

Ladies and gentlemen, you heard it here first! Adelle Onyango, the popular One FM drive show host has called it a day at One FM!

The move has caught many off-guard with some alleging that she was fired but we can exclusively confirm that this is not the case. When we contacted her for a confirmation or denial on the same, she cleared up the air. That means that any news you see on social media sites are merely rumours. Here is how she broke the news on Facebook:

“ADELLE ONYANGO has left MEDIASTREAM where she was working from September 2010 until the end of JANUARY 2013. Her departure has been amicable as she has been a founding member of 1FM where she was both HR MANAGER and a RADIO PRESENTER.

ADELLE has stated that her departure is to allow her to explore different opportunities in the continental media industry as well as focus her attention on her projects that include the NO MEANS NO rape awareness campaign and continuing the work of her late mother MARY ONYANGO in the breast cancer awareness field.

ADELLE has been instrumental in the growth of the African music industry in Kenya and will continue building Kenyan music in the same capacities as she was doing so previously. Her departure from 1FM should not be viewed as her abandoning Kenyan music and the support and passion she has for it. This is not the end but the beginning.”

She was the host of their popular drive show segment that ran from 3pm to 7pm where she had interactive shows with segments such as “HIT or MISS” where fans got to decide which songs would be trashed and which songs would be kept on the One FM track list.

She is also a poet and advocate for women’s rights who would use her personal and traumatizing rape ordeal to this end. We wish her success in whatever endeavours she pursues next.

If You Thought Getrude Mungai’s Sex Videos Were Raunchy, You Should See Her Website

A few weeks back(during Christmas no less), Gertrude Mungai launched a few videos demonstrating techniques for “Mombasa Raha,” (her word for relations between man and woman). They predictably caused quite a stir on Ghafla! and on social media. Here is an example of one of the videos:

{youtube}J-seD81a3kA{/youtube}

Seeing as sex is a touchy issue in a Christian country like Kenya, we took it upon ourselves to do a survey and poll of whether people found the material of her show to be offensive. Turns out Kenyans don’t mind it, they find her stuff educational.

Hence I did a bit of research on this woman, to find out a bit more about her. I landed on her website: GetrudeMungai.com. Very interesting stuff lays within.

First of all, when you go to the site, you are greeted with a warning that the content is only for people aged 21 and above:

Disclaimer.png

Then when you get inside, Getrude is selling her wares, from handj06 videos, to sex and intimacy seminars, all payable via MPESA and/or credit card. All in a day’s work for a celebrated sexologist, I guess.

It should be noted that Getrude only advocates for married couples to listen to her advice. Thoughts?

Ghafla POLL: Mingle vs Blankets vs 6AM Parties. Which Upscale Event Is The Poshest?

If there are events that attract the middle and upper class folk like moths to flame, it has to be these three. 6AM are elitist and they give no apologies for that fact. Blankets targets the middle class and upper echelon but leaves room for the occassional safara to save for 5days to get in. The Mingle is by far the most pocket friendly to all economic cadres.

6AM gigs usually are priced at above 1,000/- a pop. They charge that and the advance tickets are usually discounted by a couple hundred shillings only. But with that said, they are usually well staffed by security personnel and are usually a blast. And at the price, safaras are usually locked out hence the reduced incidences of robberies and muggings.

The Mingle is more the down to earth option. They even offer activities such as the childhood game of “katii” and “blada”. Here you’ll find the more down to earth variety of the middle class but don’t get it twisted, they also have dumb cash! The best thing though is that the crowd here comes seeking to mingle and have fun. The ladies especially.

But that’s enough talking up. It’s time you voted. Which between the three is the hottest event? Vote and vote in numbers! Let your voice be heard!

RIB CRACKING! Suzanna Owiyo and PLO Lumumba encounter

Oh my Lord! I can’t stop laughing as I write this down. Harpic should really be considering hiring these Nairobi Wire guys for their next advertisement. This is just super hilarious!

This is how it would have gone down, if Suzanna Owiyo tried to sell Harpic to Patrick Lumumba, as seen on Nairobi Wire.

PLO: (opening the door) Shalom visitor? Am of the opinion, without any shadow of a doubt, that your generic name is Suzanna and your specific name is Owiyo? Do you second that opinion?

Suzanna; Yeah..

PLO; Eureka! In his book ‘fathoms of justice’, Oyedepo Oluchemi verbosed a literary adage-you don’t interrogate acquaintances at your door, i agree. Please, grace the internals of my humble domiciliary…

Suzanna; Thank you

PLO; What can i get you? my domestic bar is blessed with assorted beverages of sufficient, negligible or nil alcoholic content.
All you have to do is excommunicate the plea from your mouth.

Suzanna; No thank you, actually i brought you something. Have you ever used harpic?

PLO; Your question is bereft of precision in ideology. And ooh i repeat to you just like Moses of old to the hard-hearted pharaoh, you cannot respond to a plasmodium carrying insect bite with a sledge hummer. And
therefore i poise, are you orienting to the detoxifiers in my lavatory?

Suzanna; Yes, your toilet.

PLO: Well nay, i haven’t prejudiced your product’s competitors to the advantage of harpic (haven’t used
harpic).

Suzanna; uhm okay! Meaning you haven’t used it?

PLO; precisely, but  wouldn’t mind its usage.I

Suzanna; Can I see your toilet?

PLO; Probable…

Suzanna; Well with harpic, all you have to do is…………

(10min later)

PLO; hmm I haven’t laid my visuals on such instantaneous detoxifying capabilities since time immemorial. Oooh the forest may change but the monkey of old nay! I have individuals in this house with severe bowel incontinence, we will thus embrace harpic…

Legendary Dancer Does Kamba House Song. And He’s Good

Legendary Kenyan dancer, Boneless, made a stab at music last year. His very first effort saw him nominated for a Kisima Award in the Urban Music category. And now he is back with another hit.

Supasta is the follow-up to last year’s Kusunga. The mellow track features Inami on the chorus. Like Kusunga, Supasta is done in Kamba, and on House beats, it sounds much like a Kwaito track. Boneless is a natural as a House music artiste unlike a lot of artistes who have tried it because of the changing music landscape.

Boneless says, “Supasta is all about realizing the potential within yourself, recognizing that you were born a superstar and that all you need to do is realize it. It’s up to us to discover what we can be great at and pursue the dream.” In his opinion, this is the purpose of life.

Not sure if Kusunga got the airplay it deserved but for it have gotten a Kisima nomination means it might have been heard in the right places. I hope Supasta does, too. Check out Boneless’ sophomore effort below.

Ever seen Nonini in studio during his radio sessions? Check him out

It’s been a couple of months now since Nonini joined the likes of the lovely Tina Kaggia at 1FM.

Having conquered the music scene and even birthing his own genre (Genge), Nonini now sets into the radio presenting field, expanding his wings through the vast space that is in entertainment.

We have never seen a coverage of Nonini in studio during his show. I know most of you die hard fans must be dying to see what it’s like for the Mgenge True to hold it down behind the mic on radio. Well, It seems he felt the same and uploaded a video covering his session at 1FM.

Check out the video below in which he interviews Str8 Up’s Miss Tamima while on air, and Miss Tamima interviews him off air. Really interesting.

BUSTED: Man Caught By His Wife, Cheating With A MAN!

Before I get down to details, let me just fill you in briefly on this particular man’s personal life. His name is Emmanuel. He is married and they have a kid. They have been married for seven years and the man has not made love to his wife for almost a year. With that out of the way, Get this.

Familiar with the popular Classic FM show, ‘Busted’? Ofcourse you are. Most of you have fallen victim to this exposing investigative show. You can never see it coming. That is why I never pick calls from numbers I don’t recognise. Anyway, back to the matter at hand.

Ciku Muiruri, the show host, recently made the bust of her life. She confirmed a woman’s long time speculation about her husband cheating on her, after she found a text message on his phone reading, “we had sex yesterday and I really enjoyed it.”. This however, was way more painful than she expected. Not only were her worst fears confirmed, but she also came to the shocking realisation that her seven years long husband might be leaving her and their child for a MAN!

So, Ciku to the rescue makes her famous busting call and what follows is shocking.

The man on the other end had no remorse at all. The open gay dude, Dominic, gave it to the wife as real as it gets. Sad story really.

Woman: Who are you? Are you crazy? You are trying to break up our family? Why are you going out with my husband?

Gay Man: Why didn’t he tell you before that we have a thing together? If he didn’t tell you then it’s not my problem.

Woman: You don’t even care that there’s a baby involved in all these? Don’t you know there are single women out there? Instead you go for a man like you?
I’ll kill you!
I’ll kill you!

(Suddenly, I reflect back to the Jeff Dunham Show… then back)

Man: We’re in-love. Deal with it.

Rabbit Picks Up From Where His Murdered Gangster Girlfriend Left Off

Rabbit is one of the most respected in the industry right now. Numerous polls–including a recent Ghafla! one–have had him named as the best rapper around.

One of the tracks that really got him noticed is Dodoma, a narrative about his love affair with Betty, a woman who turns out to be a wanted gangster. And the story turned out to be true and Rabbit never found out until the girl was finally gunned down by cops.

Part 2 picks up where 1 left off, speaking about the aftermath of Betty’s death and what Rabbit went through after the incident. The Dodoma series now transcends to different areas of art. Storytelling is a natural aspect of music but with this series, as evidenced at the end of this second part, this will become something even bigger as it leaves space for another installment.

His nickname, Kaka Sungura, came from his pals who noticed his narrative abilities. And if there is one track that best illustrates that gift, it’s Dodoma. Not many rappers can do fluent Swahili and come out as legit as he does.

The success may have been the motivation for the second part of what could turn out to be a series featuring the soulful Harry Kimani who recently made his comeback to music. Dodoma was produced by Pro’voke. The video is not out yet but the slideshow below makes for a brilliant mood board to go with the visuals. Check it out below.

One Of Kenya’s Oldest Websites “Mashada.com” Get’s Shut Down!

It’s a truly sad day for Kenyan geeks and techies. No, not the type to wear hipster clothing and big geek glasses, i’m talking about the true blue geeks.

Chege Miati, our social media guru has noticed something… one of Kenya’s oldest sites has been shut down. Both Majani and Chege are insisting that we have a 5 second minute of silence.

The site which was run by David Kobia has been active since 1999 or thereabout but was more recently under investigation by the Kenyan government for alleged hate speech posted by it’s users. For those of you still in the dark, Kobia’s mashada.com was a forum for Kenyans from both within Kenya and those in the diaspora to discuss matters pertaining to anything Kenyan. From politics, to religion, to sports to entertainment.
The users of the forum had taken to using the site for hate-speech and propagating tribal chauvinism. Sad that a noble idea was ruined by such small minds and the heat is now on David Kobia. Efforts to reach him for a comment have proved futile.
Chege discovered the site was down because he posts links to Ghafla stories on the site and since he noticed that it was down, he’d been monitoring the situation. The site has been down since the government released a list of sites that were under investigation for hate-speech.

Toxic Cautions Her Fans Over Facebook Imposter

Fake social media accounts for celebrities might have started harmlessly as parody accounts that poke fun at the celebrities and their fans. But with the big influence some public personalities carry, came thugs who found ways to make money out of unsuspecting fans.

From the resolved cases of Kirigo Ng’arua and Kalekye Mumo to the Julie Gichuru and Caroline Mutoko accounts that started popping up way before the two bopened social media accounts, it has been a serious problem of late.

The latest victim is former video girl and dancer, Toxic. The socialite is now married with a child, living in the United Kingdom and is concerned over an account that has over 4,500 friends from impersonating her.

“Today, I stumbled upon a Facebook account that is impersonating mine. Kindly expose it and alert anyone who may be thinking it’s me.” The real Toxic account uses the profile name Aiden’s Mummy. The fake account uses Juliet Kwashh on the profile under the facebook.com/juliet.kwashh address.

Toxic would like to caution her fans and friends who might have unsuspectingly friended and engaged with the fake account to be careful and unfriend if possible.

Hard to believe this was Alfayo Way some years back (photo)

Alfayo Way has been withing the Kenyan music industry for a while now. When he first came out with his debut single, ‘get physical’, many thought that this guy is originally a comedian.

Actually, some of us still do. His ability to put comedy into his music has put his name on many’s list of favorites. His theatrical videos and illustrative lyrics have turned comical character into one of a kind.

That is probably why I’m finding it hard to connect this serious kid photo of him, to his current hilarious and crazy state.

Now at Katenga Entertainment, Alfayo continues to crack ribs through his hilariously composed lyrics and acts.
