Kambua`s brand new song

The award winning gospel songbird Kambua has released a brand new worship song

titled ‘nisikie’. The songstress uses English when singing the verses but the chorus is done in Swahili.

This song is a prayer to the Lord that he listens to her cry and come down and assists her due to the temptations. Its is a song you can listen and also sing when you want to pray and it will bring your heart closer to God.

With a degree in music,Kambua worked as a background vocalist for various artists before going solo. She has collaborated with the likes of DNA, Mbuvi, Jimmy Gait and Daddy Own among others.

The most discussed video of the week

These guys are making a huge statement in the music scene and it goes something like “can you handle us…”

They are the guys with the swagg, the flow and the most discussed video this week. Camp Mulla has it locked.

Their latest video, ‘Fresh all day’ has been circulating all over the web and has topped most charts. Guys, you simply make us proud.

Watch the video right here.

Check out the most viewed, liked and top favourited video of the week

It is Friday yet again… [so fast], so you know we have to find out which music video topped this week.

She has hit the charts with a bang louder than Robert Alai’s scream for help. She is back, ever strong and beautiful with a brand new remix… ‘Still a liar’. I love the choreography of the video and its colourfulness.

If you havn’t seen it yet, here it is.

The movie starts at 6:30PM and the dinner at 8PM.

If you prefer to only watch the movie, the charges are Sh.500, but if you are a real gentleman and will go for both movie and dinner, charges are Sh.3000, both per couple.

Tickets are available at the Sarakasi Dome and the dress code is ‘something OMG’!

There will be live band performances and also the Sarakasi Dancers’ act. Gifts will be awarded to the best dressed couple courtesy of The Red Carpet.

See you there.

You don’t have to have a plane to fly high

When I saw this photo, it brought a lot to mind. First and obviously,

this is mad funny and innovative. Second, it really inspires me to see these guys create what they love and that they can’t aford to get. Kind of like creating your own heaven here on earth.

I also can’t help but think about our artistes who have struggled beyond barriers to reach where they are right now. Especially the one and only, Octopizzo. I have great respect for this rapper. Like I said before, he is the true definition of ‘rugs to riches’, and if not yet, then probably very soon.

He has created his own empire from nothing but his dreams and ambitions. Rappers, take a lesson. Big up Octo!

The soft spoken PM son Fidel Odinga visited Kibera a few hours before rapper

50 Cent arrived. The PM son was in the company of hip hop artiste Octopizzo whom was showing him around.

The PM son was on a charitable mission where he donated money to some of the orphanages in Kibera. He also had a chart with rapper Octopizzo on issues affecting the youths in Kenya and more so in Kibera.

Octopizzo has been doing a number of projects to help the youths in Kibera better their lives and if he gets the support like what Fidel Odinga did, then he will be able to achieve his goals.

Kenyan nominated for Movie Awards

Kenyan actor and former television newscaster Oliver Litondo has been nominated for the 2012 National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) Awards.

Nairobi, Reggae Capital of the World?

Awarding winning Jamaican producer Gareth Cobran has been ‘googling’ the streets of Nairobi, on a fact finding mission with results that will definitely be interesting to see.

The film maker and producer is on a mission… he wants to find out whether Nairobi, and Kenya are indeed the ‘Reggae Capital of the World’.

On his twitter page he wrote about dancehall:

‘We make it in #the876 (Jamaica) and it comes all the way to #the254 (Kenya)’

It is no doubt that reggae, ragga and dancehall have steadily grown in recent years to become massive genres in Kenya. With hugely successful and dedicated reggae radio stations such as Uptown Radio, together with special shows such as the Reggae Segway on Homeboyz Radio and  A.I.R Goteana and Rewind BA4 on Ghetto radio, it is no secret that the genre just drives Kenyans crazy.

As far as international performing artiste arrivals in Kenya are concerned, reggae and dancehall artistes from the caribbean most definitely top the list. We’ve had the likes of Cecile, Alaine, Chris Martin and most recently Konshens performing at packed-to-capacity venues.

Cobran’s documentary seeks to explore this unique connection, Jamaica to Africa, and will include interviews with entertainment industry big wigs, radio stations and scores of other media personalities.

Gareth Cobran has worked on videos with well known musicians such as Konshens and Chris Martin, but he is primarily interested in journalistic documentaries. Have a look at some of his work below, in Chris Martin’s video ‘Paper Loving’.

‘Still a liar’ raises queries

There has been rumours that Nameless and Wahu are headed for a divorce  after six years of marriage but sources confirmed that it s just

rumours and the couple are happy and busy raising their daughter.

This made critics say that her brand  new single ‘Liar’ is about her marriage life with hubby Nameless but the sensational singer Wahu Kagwe differs with them. She said,”the song is not about my real life experience or any other person that i know, this was just an idea of what happens to women.”

The first family as they are referred to in the music industry have been the envy of many couples in the industry as they’ve been able to manage their celebrity life with family one.

Rose Muhando Lands Record Deal

Tanzanian gospel songstress Rose Muhando has been signed by the global music recording company, Sony Music Entertainment.

The deal covers a multi-album recording deal with Sony Music, as well as a recording management deal with Rockstar 4000. In case you’re wondering, the last time these two companies collaborated their efforts was the Airtel One 8 project which produced a sterling single, Hands Across the World with an array of international artistes.

At the press conference in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam, Sony Music Entertainment Africa Managing Director Sean Watson said, ‘We are so excited about the wealth of talent we keep discovering in Africa each day.’

He went on to say that Sony Music has set it sights on becoming the primary partner of the best Africa has to offer and believes that with their assistance, these musicians can achieve Pan-African and global success.

Rose Muhando’s first album shattered regional records, selling over 5 million copies. She currently has her second album out, Jipange Sawa Sawa which is already well over the 1 million mark in album sales.

MTV Shuga Title Track: Shuga

In anticipation of the Shuga: Love, Sex and Money premiere set to take place on the 10th of February 2012, MTV just released the title track to the hit series.

Read related article on the MTV Shuga premiere here >>>

Adequately titled ‘Shuga’ the song has an African contemporary feel to it, fusing the cultural tunes of the African continent, Banky W and Wiz Kid give it a West African twist as L Tido blends in smooth South African rhythms topped off with Kenya’s very own Bon’eye summing it up with a kapuka flow.

Set in Nairobi, Shuga is a hard hitting drama that follows the lives of some young people and how they live their lives dangerously with choices that affect all those around them. It seeks to sensitize the young generation of Africa on issues to do with HIV.

They promised they will be releasing a brand new single under the newly formed Makini Music Group (MMG)

and true to that the single is out, ‘Ma city ma town‘ is the new song from Cannibal and the king of blingPrezzo. listen to the lyrics.

The song is all about praising Nairobi and Mombasa and that’s the reason they used ‘ma city ma town’ as the title because Cannibal is from Mombasa while Prezzo is from the capital city. They manage to blend Swahili and English very well.

They video is not yet out as they are still working on it but they are promising that it will be the talk of the country.

Robert Alai Gets Roughed Up at the iHub (UPDATED)

Today was an eventful day at the Nailab (where Ghafla! is located). The day began with one of the biggest tech events in Kenya’s recent history: a visit from Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop. He had come to give a talk at the iHub, which is right next door to our offices. Media personalities, Nokia employees and the Kenyan technorati were all there in full force.

Then in came one Robert Alai, eager to cover this massive event on his hard-hitting tech blog, Techmtaa. What you need to know is that Mr. Alai had already been banned from coming to the iHub, because he has written some scathing articles about them in the past.

Nevertheless, he was determined to get the once in a lifetime chance of meeting the Nokia CEO, so he tried to make his way through the beefed up security at the iHub. Unfortunately for him, the security guards were having none of it, and they proceeded to unceremoniously eject him from the venue. Alai retailiated by screaming to high heaven, which attracted the attention of everybody around. More on this story to follow.

UPDATE: A video of the Nokia event has been found and embedded further down the page. Robert Alai can be heard screaming for help at around the 3:28 mark.

But her anger and rudeness disguise her deep-seated sense of insecurity and her jealousy toward her sister, Bianca. The ugliest people in Africa

I couldn’t imagine when i saw that we were voted the ugliest people in Africa

in the annual most beautiful people of Africa awards held at the Gregor theater in  Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Rwanda took the first position followed by Cameroon and Ethiopia while we were position 48 out of 48. I don’t agree with this because if you check out our Kenyan ladies and gentlemen then you’ll understand why we should be amongst the top ten most beautiful people.

No offence but i wonder how a country like Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and even Cameroon can beat us when it comes to beauty, good grooming and communication. I wonder who were the judges and which criteria they used to come up with this rankings of which i would love to know.

INTRODUCING… WEUSI FAMILIA

Weusi Familia is a Hip hop/Electronic Super group from Nairobi. They are undeniably one of the fastest rising and much talented music group in Kenya. If you have heard their single ‘Vibrate'(see video below), you probably know what I’m talking about. Here is their biography:

ORIGINS:
“Weusi” is an acronym for: WE. US. I.
The group was founded by Don Blaze (A. Bowy) & Gaza (M.Gathu) in the mid 2000s.
The group officially came to be in 2008, with additional members coming in through the year 2009 and 2010.
The 5 member group is made up of: Don Blaze (Rapper), Gaza(Singer), Bilari (Rapper) Yung Dane (Rapper/Singer) & Mikk(Singer).

Back in 2008, the two co founders so happened to be working in the studio with Kenyan Producer DTS when the idea of forming a multi genre super-group came up. In early 2009, Don’s younger brother Yung Dane was an immediate addition to the family immediately the team heard what he was bringing to the table. He was barely 15 at that time.

Fast forward to late 2009, when as fate would have it one DTS was working with Don Blaze in the studio on his debut mix tape(CEOClearly Extra Ordinary). Around this same time DTS got introduced to Bilari (L.Lukoye) then of K Force and DTS & Bilari got down to cut a “Bounce” track. Don heard his track and immediately wanted Bilari on his debut single “Yello Yello” ft Gaza. The rest as they say, is history.
The next and final addition to the crew was Mikka, brother to one of the founders of the R&B group (Jipya). The group prides itself in being more of a band than a group due to their versatility as concerns the type of music they record.

CURRENTLY:
The group is currently under the HR/DMG labels working on individual and group projects.

MORE ON WEUSI FAMILIA:
1. DON BLAZE aka Mzee Mzima- Co Founder
The Mombasa Born and Bred Rapper is widely acclaimed for his distinct flow and lyrics and most of all his swag.
2. GAZA aka Mchizi Gaza- Co Founder
He is probably one of the reasons why Kenyan hip-hop is where it is at today. From penning award winning hooks to laying down superb vocals, Gaza formerly of Ukoo Flani is definitely a force to reckon with. The songwriter/Artist is currently working on singles for his upcoming project “Flow 4050”.
3. Bilari aka Mastaverse/ Sir Maluchi/ King wa Bounce
Self proclaimed and widely acclaimed “King Wa Bounce”, is especially known for his cocky and in your face flow…With approximately 3 mix tapes out already and a few more to drop before his album, he is definitely going for the jugular.
His single “HAWANIWEZI” is due in February 2012.
4. Mikka
The R&B singer who is now exploring other genres of music has been singing for as long as he can remember. His debut album is currently in production.
His debut single “Far Away” Features in his upcoming project.
5. Yung Dane aka Drizz Ill
This is for sure the youngest rapper alive in Kenya right now. The 2nd yr high school student says he is just getting started and is out to “Conquer everyone and everything in his way”…Simply put..Go hard or go home…
His debut single “Blast Off” is slated for an early February 2012 Release.

50 Cent in Kenya

American rapper 50 Cent is in Kenya but sadly to his fans he won’t be performing. He is on a charity mission

to aid hungry children in North Eastern Kenya. Word is he has been in Kenya since Tuesday this week before he visits Somalia.

This is a noble initiative from 50 Cent and we should thank him as a country because he has remembered us as a nation by helping us feed our brothers in North Eastern region not forgetting the hardship this people go through.

Hope people from this region will notice his presence because the last time i checked people from Masai region didn’t notice the richest man Bill Gates when he visited them.

To the matatu owners, here is a solution from IP Kenya

MCSK is infamous for using such tactics (harassment and extortion-read previous article). However the Matatu Owners Association, the owners of cyber cafes, pubs and restaurants have to be a bit proactive in confronting MCSK.

I suggest that,

as a matter of practice, always insist on the MCSK officials identifying themselves with their names and staff IDs and if they’re accompanied by police officers, they should also identify themselves.

Remember that, under the law, MCSK (or even KAMP and PRSK) have no powers of arrest or seizure of goods. Their job is to demand license fees on behalf of their members. If a music user declines to pay license fees, they have no right to extort money from the user or forcibly coerce them to pay.

All complaints of abuse of powers MUST be reported to the nearest police together with the names and IDs of the people involved. You can also report these cases to the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) directly. KECOBO is online at www.copyright.go.ke, they’re also on facebook and twitter.

Oliver Litondo wins international award

Believe it or not our own Oliver Litondo was last night awarded the Best Actor award at the 11th annual

movie for grownups awards in Beverley hills, California for his starring role in the film ‘The First Grader’.

Oliver acts as Kimani Maruge who enrolled in primary school at the age of 84 years. He has also been nominated for an outstanding actors award in a Motion picture category in the NAACP image awards which takes place  February 17th.

Business may be paralyzed at KBC

Its emerging that the government owned media house KBC is in problems after its workers union called for

a strike slated for  February 23rd due to poor working conditions and harsh treatment by their bosses.

The workers are also complaining about being intimidated and harassed by their managers thus led to the resignation of sports journalist Milton Nyakundi, due to this the permanent secretary of information Bitange Ndemo met with KBC board members in order to avert the looming strike.

The First Grader hits the cinemas

Almost two years since it was released, The First Grader hits our cinemas this month

. The story of the late Kimani Maruge, the Guinness world record holder of being the oldest pupil in the world will finally be available for Kenyans to see.

Sources say the movie was not yet released in Kenyan market due to copyright issues but was shown only at selected events such as the last year`s Kenya International Film festival.

Emmanuel Jal: and now for Bangkok

He has been through an extraordinary life and has some really touchy story to tell. For those that have had the opportunity to hear some of his speeches, you know that he is a voice to reckon. If you are keen on his emotions during his speeches ,

he might just change your life.

From being a child soldier in Sudan to a world renown rapper, Emmanuel Jal has a serious story to tell as he always says,

“I believe I have survived for a reason: to tell my story and touch lives,”

Emmanuel Jal will be in Bangkok, Thailand on the 3-5Th of May, to share his experiences as a featured writer at the Rotary World Peace Symposium, this being the 10Th anniversary of the event. More people will get to know more about the suffering that these Sudan youths go through, and something will be done hopefully.

Emmanuel Jal has done a lot for his community as I reported earlier on the article ‘Emmanuel Jal:Starving for a good cause‘, and he is not about to stop any time soon. Big up Emmanuel.

The new lecturer in town

He graduated with an MBA in strategic management and now he has landed himself in a teaching career. Gospel singer

Holy Dave is the new lecturer in town at the  Regional Center For Security and Forensic Education.

He will be teaching introduction to computer, principles of management and computer forensic at diploma level. Sources says that Holy Dave is taking this new opportunity as a step to achieving his career goal of being a Strategy professor and a Strategy planning consultant.

We hope this new career will not interfere with his music one because this can be a big blow to the gospel fraternity whom he ministers to with his songs.

Matatus on copyright woes

Corruption is still an obstacle to eradicating piracy. Take this for instance:

Matatu owners in Kiambu have declared war on Music Copyright Society of Kenya, who had recently started their work on the Kiambu roads.

The problem is not on the activity, but how it is being conducted. The matatu owners claim that the MCSK officials stop the matatus, harass and extort money from them, instead of doing their work legitimately.

This is obviously a case for the government. Please act… I’m out.

Are you an artiste without funds?… help has arrived

Kenya is burning with so much musical talent that have failed to be recognised due to luck of capital from the artistes themselves. This has been a set-back for majority youths.

But thou shall not fail in music any longer,

rejoice, for help is coming in form of a Recording studio that is to record, produce, promote, and push artistes to professional levels. Yes, the whole package.

The founder(Bernard Kioko) of the Label called Sauti Record told sources that it will be launched as soon as contracts have been signed with some musicians. He says that the label will cover every cost required to become an artiste.

Ain’t this some awesome news. Rejoice!

Music crazy…

We all love music, we take it everywhere with us, and we never want to let it go…

I get it, but at times we really take it too far. Take this guy for instance, is this crazy or what. This photo is actually trending on Facebook. Why don’t we just buy an MP3 player, it’s much more convenient.

This is a caution, please avoid showering with your laptops… more worse, desktops! As music supporters, Ghafla! is terribly disappointed.

FEATURE ARTIST: Kris Mmmh Baba

At only 23 years of age, Kris ‘Mmmh Baba’ has achieved more than what some people would wish to in a lifetime.

The Gospel musician has been rapping for about 7 years now, but got his BIGGEST breakthrough when he released his single ‘Eeh Baba’ which landed him a contract deal with Sakata Media, arguably the largest gospel production house in Kenya having worked with the likes of Juliani, Esther Wahome and Daddy Owen.

Checkout ‘Eeh Baba’ Lyrics here >>

Currently, Kris is signed with 3000 Music (Carena Sounds) where he is working on the tracks ‘Musalaba’ and ‘Black December’ and possibly videos to be rolled out later in the year.

Have a listen to Kris’ latest track ‘Macho Remix’ below

The ever funny comedian…even when off-air

I just love his shows on Ghetto Radio, especially ‘RAUKA!’. He gets guys off guard and puts them through hell while we enjoy it…

(that didn’t sound right…). Rapcha is a one of a kind dude. This are the type of guys that I like celebrating when I think about Kenyan comedy, together with the likes of Churchil and Omosh just to name a few.

He maintains comedy even when off radio. This simply shows that comedy is his life rather than work. His facebook page and tweets are full of humor. Check it out.

Laughter is the best medicine. If symptoms of boredom persist, sick Rapcha’s advice.

He is the Dance hall King… no doubt

I think he deserves the title of being the King of the Dance Hall in Kenya. I would say “that’s just me”, but I’m absolutely sure that we’re on the same page on this.

If you are not yet convinced,

you should here his latest track, ‘Feels good’ with UK rapper MusikMaestro. This is the type of song that would make you jump off your seat in the club, even when blacked out… yes, I am serious. If you haven’t ever had that effect, this is a good time to experience it.

The track that I guarantee will be a massive hit, especially in the clubs, is a fusion of techno and dance hall. A UK and Kenya combination, as Wyre puts it. Personally, the third verse is my favourite, with Wyre and MusikMaestro going head to head/back to back with the lyrics.

The video is not yet out but I know it will, in Wyre’s words, “mash up the scene”. Listen to believe.

P-UNIT for peace and unity campaign

P-Unit group are urging all Kenyans to maintain sovereignty over the upcoming elections by practicing peace and unity. They will be conveying this message mostly to the youths throughout the year through civic and peer education, social networking and media.

They are asking the youths to come out and be ready for a transformative nation come 2013. Lets support this noble initiative remembering where we are coming from as a country.

The TOXIC Tour…

Dancer turned rapper and choreographer Juliet Mochabo (a.k.a Toxic) released her video to the hit single ‘Independent’ featuring Tierra Gee, and shortly thereafter embarked on a lengthy international tour.

Fans of Toxic have been wondering where this diva has been since early December but we can reveal that she travelled to Europe in a debut international tour that has seen her perform at various locations throughout the UK and Germany.

Having performed in cities such as London, Dortmund and Hamburg, Toxic will headline the ‘Kenya Tourist Night’ on the 3rd of March 2012 in Frankfurt, Germany. She is however very interactive with her fans on both Facebook and Twitter, and promises to be back in April and take the local entertainment scene by storm.
