RACISM OVERWHELMS RELEASE OF FILM YET TO PREMIERE IN NAIROBI

The Hunger Games had its global release this past weekend, and amassed in excess of $153 million according to the Internet Movie Database, making it the third highest grossing film EVER on the American box office.

The film, directed by Gary Ross is based on the novel by Suzanne Collins and the synopsis goes something like this:

‘In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem.

The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.’

The Hunger Games, set to premiere in Kenya at Fox Theatres on the 13th of April 2012, is already raising eyebrows from racists across Europe and America, surrounding assumptions they had made about a character in the book, namely Rue, played by Amandla Stenberg.

What else is showing at the movies in Nairobi Cinemas >>

In the book, Suzanne Collins described Katniss (the lead character) seeing Rue as ‘of dark brown skin’ but readers and fans did not anticipate that the casting would result in an African American takign the slot. In case you don’t know who Amandla Stenberg is, she played the little ‘Zoe Saldana’ in Colombiana.

An overwhelming number of movie goers took to social media platforms out raged that ‘a black girl was cast’  with such remarks as ‘the movie being ruined’ for them.

The best female lyricist in Kenya

Most ladies have feared to enter into hip hop as they always see it as a man’s territory because it’s associated with gangsters, but this doesn’t deter upcoming female rapper Xtatic.

She has dropped her latest single titled `the prep’ which was produced by Provoke of African Native Group.

This lady has the flow and her lyrics are tight. I think she is Kenya’s version of US celebrated rapper Nicky Minaj.

Xtatic managed to give this song a hardcore hip hop feel as she brought out the street voice in her (kept it ghetto). Truly this lady is from Eastlands and I bet she will be the best female rapper in Kenya.

OMG! Self taught guitarist… this lady might just beat Bob Marley and the likes

It is now proved that you don’t have to go to school to learn music. You either have it in your blood or you don’t have it at all.

Just here in Kenya, this lady has been amusing pedestrians from all over, by her knowledge around the strings of her guitar. It is not everyday that you will see a guitarist play the instrument in such a unique and pleasant way. Her handling of the guitar alone is amazing.

Check out Africa’s best guitarist doing what she does best.

Should Prezzo and Jaguar step up like Bobby Wine and Bebe Cool?

I just got word that Uganda’s biggest arch-rivals Bobby Wine and Bebe Cool are at it again, but this time they have chosen to go all professional on their beef. They have both agreed on a one on one music battle. Despite having taken to throwing punches at each other in the past, it is now strictly musical war.

When I read about this, similar artistes from Kenya came to mind. I thought about the long-time beef they’ve been having with each other, War of words and hear-say and said to myself, “Hmm, wouldn’t it be professional and entertaining if these two great artistes could just do it like Bebe and Bobby? At least we would then be sure whom among them is the best instead of depending on cheap talk.”Jaguar now

It is at that moment that I decided to wright this article and later make sure that the two artistes read it. Abbas and Octopizzo did it and it is about time we had another music battle. Let’s get this over with.

STEP OUT OF THE WAY DISNEY, HERE COMES KENYA!

The quest to make Kenya the next frontier of a revitalised Silicon Valley is a consumate one, with not just the country’s tech companies in the gold rush, but also local animators gearing up for better forecasts and a greater demand.

The ‘Silicon Savannah’ dream seems to be taking shape, albeit slowly but at a steady pace, with the government heavily investing in publicity and incentives to lure interested (local and international) parties into pioneering projects such as Konza Technology city and its lesser known sister project Malili e-City. Animators do not want to be left behind as the revolution metamorphs into a reality despite numerous obstacles.

Let’s imagine an ultra-modern city with shinning marble streets. Everything will glitter. Mr. Gikonyo Gitonga of CB Richard Ellis imagined about the planned Malili e-City back in 2010: “Due to competition, the techno-park must have quality residential areas, entertainment spots, shopping malls, sport facilities like a golf course, among others, to make it an attractive place to work.”

Even as the Information PS Dr. Ndemo was painting a good picture of the project, a fierce battle was raging inside and outside the courts regarding the manner the government was handling the purchase of the land which was allegedly worth Kshs1 billion and the government had paid only Shs400 million. Disputes erupted because of what are said to be irregular payment channels and we haven’t heard much talk since about the project.

Nonetheless, with the laying of the fibre optic cable broadening prospects, the future seems bright for the animation industry. Despite efforts by regional broadcasters and the audiovisual community in Africa, children’s programmes and in particular computer-animated cartoons, were mostly imported from abroad. This lack of local content was mainly caused by the absence of cost effective production, the lack of ICT equipment, facilities and the lack of people with skills in computer animation. UNESCO realized this deficiency and organized the first ever initiative to pool together resources and expertise in this specialized production, under the banner Africa Animated! in 2004.

The first five week hands-on training workshop was held at the Zanzibar International Film Festival and in Nairobi in June/July 2004, successfully showcasing the talent, skills and potential in animation production. 15 young African artists with little or no previous experience in animation underwent a tailor-made intensive training.

anima simpsons

Taught by renowned animators and audiovisual professionals such as Cilia Sawadogo, Concordia University, Montreal, Anezka Sebek, Parsons School of Design, USA, Paula Callus, Bournemouth University, UK, Nina Paley, Parsons School of Design, USA as well as local co-trainers, the workshop included guest lectures by experts in (African) animation and art such as Emma Kaye, South Africa, Silvia Bazzoli, Italy and Mshai Mwangola from right here in Kenya.

Other partners who ended up supporting the Africa Animated! initiative included: Canal France International (CFI), the French Cooperation, French Embassy Nairobi, UNICEF’s Sara Communication Initiative, Bournemouth University, UK, Parsons School of Design, USA, Concordia University, Canada, Kenya College of Communications Technology (KCCT), URTNA, SABA, SABC and KTN.

Foreign companies began to take notice of the potential that continental animators had, and arguably the most successful outcome has to be ‘Tinga Tinga tales’, co-produced by Nairobi-based Homeboyz Animation and UK-based Tiger Aspect for the BBC’s childrens channel.

anima tinga

Allan Mwaniki, director and lead animator at Homeboyz, said that the scale of “Tinga Tinga Tales,” which involved nearly 50 animators in Nairobi, was proof that the Kenyan industry could effectively handle a large-scale production. “We’ve shown the world we can do it.”

Newspapers and Magazines also regularly feature animated pull outs such as Supa Strika and Shujaas which are locally produced. Even MTV Shuga is coming up with a graphic version of the hit series

Read more about Shuga going Graphic here >>

Animators still face limited opportunities in the Kenyan market though. Kwame Nyong’o, creator of the well-regarded animated short “The Legend of the Ngong Hills,” which was just recently nominated for an award at the 2012 African Academy Awards, told Variety magazine that the Darwinian nature of the local industry forces artists to be avid promoters of their own work. “You have to create the opportunities for yourself.”

anima ngong

Checkout who else got nominated for the 2012 African Academy Awards here >>

There’s been an explosion of interest in just what the animation industry in Kenya has to offer as the country positions itself to be the leading outsourcing region in the world after Bangalore, India and the Silicon Valley in the USA.

We even have the likes of the African Sci-Fi Factory linking up with cartoonist GADO to come up with the popular CGI production, the XYZ show. Some musicians such as Just a Band have also experimented with  animation in 3D as a production team, Wageuzi,  also made a feature animated ‘political battle’. (see video below).

It is for this sprawling reason that the Kenya Film Commission has hosted the Animation Expo for the past three years. In the past, the event has incorporated the showcasing of animation works by Kenyan artists as well as an entrepreneurship workshop.

anima xyz

This year as the Commission focuses on providing opportunities for investment in film, the Expo will incorporate film producers as well as animators showcasing their work. The Commission will encourage exhibitors to have sample works as well as merchandise of their film and animation works.

The target participants for the expo include investors, distributors, corporate companies, content acquisition managers (from broadcast houses) students, creative industry professionals and all those interested in local content.

The Film and Animation expo will take place on the 31st of March 2012 at the Prestige Palm at Prestige Plaza on Ngong Road from 9.30 am. Exhibitors will include:

• Cinematic Solutions (film & TV)
• HARTO (Animation)
• Immortal Media (Film &TV)
• Airpress Communications (Animation)
• Digital Dialect Designs (Animation)
• Sigi Tolo Media Inc (Animation)
• Anto Dezigns (Animation)
• Senzafine (Animation)
• Arc Rotate Studios (Animation)
• Digitall Definitions (Animation)
• Rift 3D (Animation)
• Nairobi Institute of Technology (Animation)
• RiverWood Ensemble (film)
• Balozi Productions(Animation)
• Mojo Productions (film)
• Chomoka Studio (Animation)
• Homeboyz Animation
• Daystar University (Film)

This expo follows a workshop that took place last Friday at the Multimedia University, with the discussion being ‘Animation in Africa’ and led by Mwara Kung’u and Kwame Nyong’o, both experts in the field.

There is no denying that the future is bright for Kenyan animators, as long as they get access to the resources they require and develop the right skills to meet the evolving global market.

If you thought it’s a man’s work, then you are wrong

She is young and very talented when it comes to spinning the hottest gospel jams. She has defied all odds to become the

first Kenyan female gospel deejay.

System Unit introduced their newest female DJ, DJ Tabbz whom entertained guys alongside DJ Mo at Crossconect, which happened on Sunday 25th at Timers Restaurant.

It is known that deejaying is a man’s job, but this talented lady wants to set the record straight that what a man can do, a woman can do better and that’s what she’s doing.

Dj Tabbz is still under the mentorship of DJ Mo whom she learns from.

DON’T MISS OUT AS DJ JOE MFALME MAKES SOME CHANGES

The changes, which take effect immediately, apply to Capital FM, the station on which he mixes:

Thursday: The Take Over Mixx From 8pm-9pm on Hits Not HomeWork.

The Kiss Bandit gives the ladies more reason to kiss him

It turns out that the Kiss Bandit, real name John Telewa is even more clever than I thought. He is the man with the cheeky plan, and the plan is to get as many as possible ladies to kiss him with aim of breaking the world record for ‘the man that kissed many women’.

He has now decided to add a ‘T-Shirt’ bait to the plan. He is not necessarily calling it ‘bait’… that’s just my definition of this genius strategy. Being a good graphic designer that he is, he has just designed t-shirts with the phrase ‘I kissed the Bandit’ on them. The T-shirt is meant for the ladies that will participate and help in his quest of achieving World Record.telewa 2

By the look of things, Telewa is receiving much love from the ladies. Celebrities and ‘the common wananchi’ too. He has even received a random kiss while out shopping in his normal day to day life and more are asking him through inbox about his appearance in their areas of residence.

Way to go Telewa… way to go!

Namtero’s facebook account is hacked

After yesterday’s Namtero’s face book update that one of the Raber’s brother wanted sexual favors from her, check the whole story here. Ralph Raber came to the defence of his brother

confirming to us that the whole issue is false and that Tero’s FB account is hacked by unknown person.

Namtero’s sister, Vanessa Mdee also confirmed that Tero is not on FaceBook or twitter. She also advised her sister’s fans to disregard any information from the supposed FB and twitter accounts of Namtero as it is fake.

Is Jaguar about to join politics???

Word/tweet on twitter has been that Jaguar is thinking of contesting for the Makadara Constituency seat. That music is not enough for the artiste/entrepreneur. Well, it is now confirmed that all that was just a hoax.

Some lonely cat claiming to be Jaguar on Twitter tweeted this false information. I just don’t get why someone would open a social media account as someone else and post nonsense like this that would probably lead to defamation situations like this. First, it was Michael Maina and now this.

Jaguar cleared everything after he told The Star’s Word is, “I was shocked when nominated MP Rachel Shebesh called me to congratulate me for finally joining politics. I wouldn’t want the current MP who is a very good friend of mine to think that I’m now going to be his rival. Politics is not my thing.”

Jaguar has been distributing water tanks with his name on them to various locations. This might have raised the speculations of him vying for the seat.

Bushman: From Jamaica with love

Ever since Mavado failed to come to Kenya, I have had low hopes for any Jamaican star to visit this beautiful country (except for Cecile-she loves us just as much as we love her). That was until I heard from sources that Bushman is on his way here.

We have had too much dancehall lately, in clubs and parties, and I am more than glad to see that we are finally getting a visit/performance from a Roots Reggae singer. In case you don’t know, Bushman is not just another reggae singer. Bushman is among the few reggae artistes that has maintained his roots culture and music despite living in a world that is in so many ways influenced by dancehall vibes.bushman reggae

Bushman is celebrated not only in Jamaica but mostly in Europe, Japan and Africa (especially Kenya as Reggae is). Some of his most famous songs include ‘creatures of the night’, ‘worries and problems’, ‘fire burn a weak heart’ just to mention a few. His album ‘Bushman sings the Bush Doctor’ which is a tribute to Peter Tosh also received and is still receiving much love from all over the world. Despite all the years spent in the music industry, the I is still strong in the Roots Reggae music and culture of life.

I for one cannot wait for his performance. With the Peter Tosh spirit of performance that he possess, the show should be more that vibrant with definite positive vibrations. More details on his tour will be availed as soon as it is in hand. All in all, we welcome the I with open arms. ROCKERZ!!!

K’ogalo adds another new song to their playlist

Award winning rapper who is also the Luo rap king, Bigpin has released a classic new song for Kenya’s most celebrated team. The song is titled

`Gor Mahia’ and it’s in praise of the mighty K’ogelo.

bigpin

Bigpin has maintained his usual style of rapping and proved to us why he’s the Luo rap King as he managed to fuse both Swahili and Luo language.

K’ogalo is one of the oldest and the most successful football club in Kenyan premier league. It‘s the only team in the whole world that has followers and not fans.

I hope to hear `sirikal’ sing this song in one of their premier league matches.

Here is the song>>>>>

Celebrity gay stalker trashed

Following claims of a gay stalker saying that he has had flings with some of our acknowledged celebrities such as Jimmy Gait, Shaffie Weru and Nick Mutuma (read related article), Gay Rights Activist Denis Nzioka has apologised on behalf of the gay community.

The gay stalker known as Michael Maina has raised speculations on the sexuality of some of the mentioned celebrities through his tweets and facebook updates. It turns out, according to the release statement issued by Nzioka, that Michael Maina surfers from inferiority complex and thus gets ‘illusional thoughts’ and just loves the taste of drama.

From sources, part of the release statement that Denis Nzioka issued read, “I feel personally responsible for his behavior and be assured this was not the motive. Additionally, it has never been my intention to ‘out’ anyone. Therefore, I apologise for what happened and Mike’s behaviour and also what such remarks from him (or others) might have on you, “I assure you that such behavior is not what the larger gay and lesbian community exhibit or allow or adhere to. I hope for cordial relationships and integrity both to us(gay) and to you and any form of attacks on a person’s personal life, work or peccadilloes most regrettable”.

It is good that this is finally cleared and hopefully Michael Maina will soon get a life and leave the fantasy world.

P Unit’s Gabu’s new reason to smile… Khai

Controversial rapper Gabu of P Unit has since last week been the happiest man alive. On Sunday the 18th, his girlfriend Lelo gave birth to their son whom they decided to name Khai. The baby is said to have weighed 2.8KGs.

It is for this reason that the P Unit crew had to party hard later on, with their close friend and celebrities, among them Nonini. Gabu is known to keep his private life just that (private) but more news about this will be availed shortly.

QFM lets Talia Oyando go

QFM is said to be recruiting new staff members including radio presenters, and so they took this opportunity to ‘piga kalamu’ beautiful and bootylicious Talia Oyando and her colleague Maureen Medza.

There may however be another reason for firing Talia, being that she started feeling like, and wanting to be treated like a diva (ain’t she?) as sources claim. Well, if my memory serves me right (and if not, there’s always YouTube), Talia was a good singer and it just might be the calling that she’s alway’s put aside coming around.

Get back to the studio Talia. It’s about time.

THE FAKE PISTOL (BONOKO) RESURFACES IN ‘A HOUSE’

The Kenyan house music maestros have struck again. Stunner New Limits (SNL) have made their latest offing, an eclectic remake of the famed Bonoko beat.

Find out more about Stunner New Limits here >>

The inspiration and background to the new release is based on a true story; a guy tells a news reporter in the city of how a guy was found by police peeing by the roadside & when he saw the cops, he took off running rather than to get arrested.

The copolice officers then proceeded to open fire and killed him, then planted a fake pistol (aka bonoko) on this person, to make it seem as though he was an armed thug.

So this guy goes on with his commentary on how this is the norm rather than the exception and even shares other incidences of how his own friends were killed in a similar manner and a “bonoko” was planted on their corpses…

An artiste from Kibera might perform for the Queen along Kanye and Diddy

‘Take that’ singer Gary Barlow has recently been around the world in search for artistes to perform at the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Concert. The concert takes place on the 4th of June and marks 60 years of the Queen’s rule.

The two Princes, William and Harry sent Barlow to America and the Commonwealth countries to find artistes to perform at the concert. He was in Kenya last week and tweeted “Spent the morning at the Kibera slum. Met some young, inspirational musicians there”.

He has already met influencial musicians here and all over the world, the top of the list being P Diddy and kanye West and is trying to find the best in various genres, and he is still on the hunt. Whoever the artistes from Kibera are, we at Ghafla!Kenya wish them all the best.

IS WALALAHOI DEAD AND GONE?

Information just in from our newsroom reveals that the infamous and extremely popular news site Walalahoi has been shut down… the reason being UNPAID BILLS.

If you log onto the website, Walalahoi.ning.com, the information is there for the whole world to see as the update on the screen boldly states:

THIS NING NETWORK IS CURRENTLY DISABLED DUE TO AN OVERDUE BALANCE

wala net fail

The website has remained popular among urban Kenyans and Ugandans as it usually breaks the news or releases photos on explicit content around towns, campuses and celebrities.

Walalahoi has allegedly released lewd pictures of celebrities such as Faridah Karonei and Avril which went viral within hours of release, across social media networks and on the internet. There were denials on some parts as well as statements made, but it was all out in the public domain and people displayed mixed reactions.

There was lude p**nographic content and other photography featured as well from the campuses of JKUAT and CUEA, both based in Nairobi, which resulted in widespread student protest though that did not stop the photos from once again going viral.

The case of the ‘leaked texts’ from Classic 105 FM caused quite a storm in media circles and got Kenyans talking about the leading morning drive time show.

More recently, Walalahoi revealed the first ever seen pictures of just what goes on at the now famous Muliro Gardens in Kakamega as well as more pictures of the goings-on at the Nyeri cemetery after dark.

With all this publicity, we’re baffled as to what went wrong? What do you think?

This Friday, Kenya Nyte brings Daddy Owen to the stage

On the 30th, the show that celebrates the history of Kenyan music will be happening yet again. Same venue (Asmara lounge, Pangani), same time, more swag. There is one other thing though. Another reason why you shouldn’t miss this edition of Kenya Nyte.

The one and only King of Kapungala, the guy taking gospel music to the next level, Daddy Owen, will be taking to stage on this edition. With DJ Westly and DJ 2one2 on the decks, Daddy Owen promises a night to be remembered.

Entry is free.

Is this why Tero left Homeboyz radio?

People have been asking Namtero Mdee reasons behind her resignation at Homeboyz Radio where she was a presenter but what’s shocking is the post on her FB account.

Namtero posted that she left Homeboyz radio because one of the Raber brothers, DJ John, who is the CEO of Homeboyz was demanding sexual favors from her. Check the FB post here

teroHope all this matter can be resolved as soon as possible because this are serious allegations.

We’ve tried to reach out to Raber brothers and DJ Kaytrixx for comments but we could not reach them.

We are currently waiting for Namtero to confirm the whole issue.

We finally have the ‘guarantee’ video by Wyre and Morgan Heritage. Awesome!

The video for the song ‘guarantee’ by Wyre, Peetah and Gramps Morgan was shot just recently while the two Jamaicans were still in the country. Apparently, the whole video was shot withing two hours, and still managed to look this hot.

The short filming time was due to the tight and busy schedule for the three artistes but no one is complaining. Considering the little time they had to do this video, it is just marvelous. Shot in a single studio, the reggae family gives you the rhythm vibes that we love so much, with Gramps on the keys.

The video was just released yesterday and now you can view it exclusively on Ghafla!Kenya. Enjoy.

To Nanjira, music was just a social experiment

She is one of the best vocalists in the country and also the lead singer of the Ma3 band. Ghafla got the chance to speak to the talented vocalist, Nanjira Sambuli, whom we found out that apart from music, she is also a mathematician.

Nanjira doing what she's best at
                                                                              Nanjira doing what she loves

Ghafla: Tell us more about Nanjira the musician
Nanjira: It was a social experiment. I started gigging with one person who found me somewhere jamming, and he led me to the others. I mean i started with Juliani, then Atemi, who led me to Ma3.
Ghafla: Why take music as a career
Nanjira: I didn’t really go to music as a career but it was those things that I knew if I ever got a chance, I will do, and am here, as it’s God’s gift.
Ghafla: Why the love for Afro-pop
Nanjira: Afro-pop has been dubbed the new sound of Africa. We grew listening to pop music but Afro has that unique element of Africa i.e. the drums, the dancing and the stars.
Ghafla: Tell us whom you’ve collaborated with
Nanjira: I did a collabo with Juliani in his album `pulpit kwa street’ and the jam is called `new year’,  did `photocopy’ with DNA, but the biggest collaboration was featuring in Erick Wainaina’s album, `love and protest’, that was wow. I did like half the album, so it was really cool. I was doing the vocals in the back.
Ghafla: Who inspires you, musically
Nanjira: I keep my inspiration local. I grew up listening to Yvonne Chaka Chaka and I love her music. I think she is among the people who defined Afro-pop. Erick as a song writer, I think he’s amazing, I’d like to eat his fruit of wisdom. He’s been able to channel issues through music in an eloquent way.
Ghafla: Are you in a relationship
Nanjira: currently am single. Am focusing on my career but if Mr. Right appears then he’ll definitely get a chance (hope single men had that)
Ghafla: Advice to up coming artistes
Nanjira: Don’t bow to pressure. Talent does not need sideshows. If you are good at what you do, focus on it. They should also try to market themselves through social media.

The MTV Shuga series second season may be comign to an end, but MTV assures that the story does not indeed end there.

In an announcement last week on their Shuga Blog, MTV announced that they received such overhwhelming response from fans across the globe over the first #ShugaSex chapter surrounding the story of the character Baby and Violet, including the issue of gender based violence, that they would be producing a novel around the same theme and characters.

‘One particular issue that we, and everybody else have strong opinions about was that of gender based violence – in particular in the heartbreaking story of Baby in Episodes 1 and 2 in which her Uncle Njau abused his position of authority and took advantage of her sexually.

One article in particular that created a lot of discussion was 10 Ways To Protect Yourself From Sexual Violence, in which we discussed Baby’s rape, and talked about steps to take to reduce the risk of ending up in such a situation in the first place.

Have a look at an excerpt of the graphic novel by MTV Shuga below:

As a follow up to that, we will be releasing a graphic novel that will be focusing on and extending Baby’s story.’

This is the FIRST time ever that a local television production in Kenya has followed up its screening with a supplementary graphic display. It will be interesting to see the response to this as usually a ‘comic’ comes first, followed by an on-screen adaptation, much like the Supa Strikas.

The tour took Gary to places such as Karatina, Kibera and even a brief stay at the Amboseli National Park. He talked to Kenyans, finding out what they felt about the Monarch who has been in power since 1957 when she was crowned on Kenyan soil.

Mr. Barlow flew back to Sydney, Australia on the 22nd of March 2012.

The much anticipated ‘Headbang em’ video is now released

The ‘headbang em’ track has been doing rounds on the social media and it has gotten a good reception. The Headbangaz crew posted the ‘behind the scenes’ video of the songs and it immediately got everyone talking.

Producer Dirty Damu did a good job on this video by making it a one of a kind. Shot on the Westlands streets, the Headbangaz crew do their thing. They all have mad lyrics and flow to their verses, all proving to be professionals in this business.

I would say that the only person missing from this sick track is Abbas Kubaff. He would have completed it, but still, it’s a wrap. Headbangaz manage to keep the track and the video as urban as possible. keeping it real Hip Hop.

Make way for the top ten hit makers

They are at the top of all our play lists. Topping all charts and hyping all clubs. They rap/sing about something and it immediately trends. You just can’t afford not to love their songs, and even if you do, they will still make it to the top of the charts. Here they are.

10. Avril. From her first song, ‘mama’ we all fell in love with her cute voice. Apart from being sexy and controversial, Avril knows her way through hit making. She did it in her collaboration with Marya on ‘chokoza’ and she did it again on ‘kitu kimoja‘.Avril

9. Camp Mulla. The new kids on the block are not so new right now. They have delivered hard hitting tracks, one by one, and have got everyone talking positive about them. They’ve even made it international and they are just getting started (literally). One more year and they will be untouchable. Some of their hits are ‘addicted’, ‘party don’t stop’, ‘take it to the floor’ and ‘fresh all day‘.camp-mulla

8. Nonini. The Godfather knows his stuff well. Always attempting to introduce a new talent to the scene, usually ending up to be awesome artistes just like P Unit. He has given us hits like we kamu, kadhaa, keroro, nani mwenza, heshma and my personal favorite ‘mtoto mzuri‘.nonini

7. P Unit. They were introduced to the music industry by the Godfather, Nonini and they immediately took over the scene. Giving us hits like kare, si lazima, kushota kulia, hapa kule and going further to collaborate with other awesome artistes like Sauti Sol to give us the masterpiece of their works… ‘gentleman‘.p-unit

6. Sauti Sol. It is automatically so. They are just too original and collected. I don’t think we can ever have enough of their voices. Some of their greatest hits are ‘blue uniform, soma kijana, coming home’ and ‘lazizi‘.Sauti Sol

5. Daddy Owen. He doesn’t have a rough tone like his brother but he sure has the ‘hit making’ factor in his blood. His fashion sense and dancing styles contribute to his song’s popularity. He is the guy behind hits like ‘dakika tatu, system ya kapungala, Yesu, saluti’ and ‘tobina‘.daddy-owen

4. Wyre. king of the dancehall, so I call him. Most of his songs belong to the clubs. He has even collaborated with other international hit makers like Morgan Heritage and Cecile and some of his awesome works are ‘make a choice’, ‘dancehall party’ and ‘she say dat‘.wyre

3. Juliani. All the way from Ukoo Flani, he is the man with the lyrics that get you thinking twice about whatever you are about to do (if bad). Conscious but yet entertaining. Not alcohol related but yet top charting songs. This guy is just awesome. Some of his hits are ‘hela, biceps, bahasha ya ocampo, mtaa mentality’ and ‘exponential potential‘.Juliani

2. Stella Mwangi. Since her first official track with Chris Kantai ‘happy’, we knew she was destined for the tops and that’s exactly where she belongs. With hits like ‘hoola hoop, haba haba, happy, taking it back, dreamer’ and the all time favorite ‘lookie lookie‘, she’s gonna be here for a while.Stella Mwangi

1. Madtraxx on the tracks. There is no debating on this one. He has never released a track that failed to get everyone drunk and dancing their shoes off. His songs have made us do really crazy stuff. Things that we ain’t so proud of. Just thinking about them makes me want to party and do them all over again… #stupidtalk. TGIF. These are some… all, of his hits, ‘ita waiter, boda boda, skamaress, fire fever, big shot, Poa’ and my personal favorite ‘get down‘.Madtraxx

J’Mani infected with the Nigerian fever

Everybody is turning to the Nigerian flow of almost everything. Personally, I think it’s really unfortunate that some Kenyan actors and comedians think it’s entertaining to embrace the Nigerian accent and characteristics in our entertainment. That is just sad.

However, I love it when Kenyan rappers and singers collaborate with our brothers from the West to give us awesome party songs. Wyre did it, P Unit did it too and now J’Mani just joined the group.

‘Ginja yo body’ is the title to the song that J’Mani did with HB. J’Mani’s rap flow and JB’s Nigerian/dancehall singing technique make this track a head banger. The video embraces technology too, something Kenyan videos tend to avoid.

Check out the song below and tell us what you think about it.

Hardstone is still M.I.A… can anybody bring him back?

His was one of the first artistes in Kenya to start doing music, especially hip hop with the likes of Kalamashaka. It didn’t take long for him to make it to the spot light since there were very few hip hop artistes in Kenya at that time. Plus we really loved his music.

“Ewe Mola… tafadhali nipe jawabu la swali langu. Mpenzi wangu yuanitia mawazo”. This were some of his lyrics for his first song which was a massive hit. The song titled ‘Uhiki’ was a fusion of Kikuyu and dancehall. Awesome music.hardstone

Hardstone relocated to the Cleveland, USA and it seems he found it better there. He still does music but very little of it reaches us. He was also one of the hit makers of his time, with Nameless competing hard.

His music is available on YouTube though. I just wish he would give us the music that we so much miss from him. Have a listen to this old school, all time favorite.

Sauti Sol and Just a Band face off

They are the best bands we have in Kenya as voted by East Africans. One thing is not clear though… Who among them is the best? Which of the two boy bands has more fans?

It is hard to place a crown on one of them when they both put out extremely good and original music. There is no ‘photocopy’ aspect in their music and videos whatsoever. Remember Sauti Sol’s ‘blue Uniform’? It took East Africa by storm. The acting, choreography and theme of the video was just too original and awesome. So was Just a Band’s ‘HAHE’. The creation of a needed black superhero was all we needed, and so they created the ‘bad a**’ Makmende. I don’t think there is anyone that does’nt know this guy.

They are both fond of the good acting skills that singer and actor Patricia Kihoro has to offer, and most of their videos are theatrical. The similarities between the two bands cannot go unnoticed, yet they deliver good music in their own unique ways. The two bands are also appreciated internationally at individual levels and this makes them kind of a big deal.

I will not even attempt to expound on their voices because I know we have all experienced what they can do with their vocal chords.

This is your chance to speak out for your favorite band between the two. Which band takes over the other?
