Hot Collaboration: Sauti Sol & Nyota Ndogo

Sauti Sol have been super busy this year. They have been working on a new album, releasing an extended play record with South Africa’s Spoek Mathambo and a European tour. They are also putting out new music.

Their latest release, Yule, is a collaboration with Mombasa-based new-Taraab artiste, Nyota Ndogo. The tracks starts off with Nyota Ndogo on the chorus followed by Sol’s Mudigi in the first verse. Bien follows just before Nyota Ndogo’s chorus and second verse.

It’s refreshing seeing Sauti Sol trying different styles, though this is much closer to the kind of songs they usually do. It has a contemporary Africanness to it, including a lingala-ish ad lib near the end.

Sauti Sol have recently made some left-field collaborations, from a track with Bongo’s AY to the Spoek Mathambo project. Listen to Yule below.

A letter from BBA’s Alex, to the country

A lot of bad mouthing has been going on about ex BBA housemate, Alex. All this started after he nominated Prezzo for evictions and got worse when he (Alex) was evicted from the house. I saw this coming from a mile away, and so did you.

Anyway, Alex has now come out to defend his name and make things clear once and for only. It’s only fare to hear his part of the story. Here is his statement which he posted through his facebook page.

“Hey fam, a lot of issues have arisen since I nominated my countryman for eviction from the BBA Stargame 2012. I wish to give my position on the matter hoping we can make peace and move on with life.

The main beef has been I’m a “traitor”, “unpatriotic” and “not a nationalist”. Fellow Kenyans, I’m nothing close to any of that.

I’m very proud of my nation, I respect my fellow citizens and I always showcase my country at all times. Guys, I was brought up with patriotism, integrity and honesty being drilled in me – And I believe in all those virtues. That’s why I always displayed the Kenyan flag during eviction nights, task presentations and any other opportunities. I don’t have to tell you this but I’ve always had my national flag in my bedroom. Our family sitting room has always had the national flag above the fire place. Our family cars have Kenyan flags at all times- And I strongly believe in my nation.

Some have said I couldn’t sing the national anthem. I apologize to my motherland that I missed the final words of the anthem due to prevailing pressure. But out of my honesty and belief in my country, I immediately repeated the whole stanza and sang it flawlessly. I did not choose to insert my own words to look good. I respect my national anthem.

So the question keeps arising why I nominated my countryman for eviction. My answer is simple and direct: my countryman violated my personal interests and freedom of association. My understanding is that the right of an individual legally executed comes before patriotism, because whoever violates your rights is unpatriotic in the first place. My countryman came across as selfish, hiding luxury items from other housemates including me. He was also unduly aggressive to me. He prevented me from freely associating with a fellow housemate, Goldie, telling me “You don’t know me!”. That’s on record at BBA.

I wish to state that if anyone steps on my legally executed freedom and legitimate interests, then I’ve the right to take any lawful action I deem necessary to safeguard my interests and freedoms. This analysis informed my decision to nominate my country man.

That said, I respect you, you respect me and patriotism comes after me and you recognize that we are both human beings with equal basic rights and freedoms. I love the new constitution of Kenya because it’s very clear on rights and freedoms of citizens.
Fam, my appeal is for peace to prevail and we move on. I have no grudge on Prezzo and if Africa decides he shall be the winner, I’ll congratulate him and be sincerely happy for him.”

BEEF AT CALIF: JUACALI TEARS INTO…

The weather has been PMSing for quite a while and it seems to be really bad at Calif and the effects are cataclysmic!

None other than Jua Cali has thrown down the gauntlet and he has gone in H.A.M on erstwhile labelmates and i would have thought friends Q-Tasi and Kendi.
According to Ghetto Radio, the genge maestro has been tearing into these individuals calling them lazy and claiming that they want to be spoon-fed.
This is how Ghetto radio dropped the comments allegedly made by Jua Cali.

CALIF BEEF

And we’ll keep you informed as the situation unfolds but this week we’ll be talking to Q-Tasi and we’ll find out his spin on whatever is going on. Keep it Ghafla!

BBA Update: How Africa Voted To Save Prezzo

Prezzo is still going strong in the Big Brother Stargame house. He gave a few people goosebumps when he announced he would voluntarily leave the house but it looks like Africa still got his back. He did not only get the obvious Kenyan vote, Tanzania also came through for him once again. So did Liberia and the rest of Africa again.

However, Uganda’s Kyle got the highest number of votes (6), two above Prezzo and Lady May in second place. Uganda’s overwhelming vote for Kyle meant that another countryman had to leave. Jannette only got one vote: Ghana’s. Below is a rundown of how the last week of nominations vote went.

Kyle = 6 (Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia)
Prezzo = 4 (Kenya, Liberia, Tanzania, Rest of Africa)
Lady May = 4 (Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe)
Jannette = 1 (Ghana)

Meet Kenya’s very own Mystical

He is the rapper with a flow like that of American rapper, Mystical. Kind of aggressive yet very entertaining at the same time. With comedian and fellow rapper, Man Njoro, popularly known as Nemesis by his side, Fauz Noir unleashed this epic song, ‘Nu Bounce‘.

The song also known as ‘Mko wapi‘, was released late last year but unfortunately has not received as much recognition as it should have. The song has the electronic feel of beats and Fauz Noir’s aggressive flow goes so well with it.

The video was shot in a hanger and this work is nothing short of brilliant. Check it out.

Raila Amollo Odinga joins the #TeamPrezzo bandwagon!

More good news for #TeamPrezzo as Kenya’s Prime Minister joins the list of politicians falling over themselves to endorse the cause!

And it’s ggod that no less than the Prime Minister has urged Kenyans to vote for Prezzo as now you can be sure that everyone, including those not bothered with the BBA proceedings will now be showing el Prezidente their support.

This is how Raila Odinga showed his support:

Project Bring Prezzo Back Home (With All That Money!)

All good things must come to an end and as King Igor Shahdov said in the movie “A King in New York”, “To part is to die a little…”

But we shall make Prezzo’s parting from the BBA house alot smoother and easier if we can get him home with that loot!

And it’s on and popping like a rotund girl’s blouse if we can just get Prezzo home with 300,000USD$ because Kenya will not just have broken it’s jinx of not getting one of her own into the finals but will have done so in style.

And uncle Chim Tuna has the plan: let’s all vote for Prezzo and if not because we like him, then because we are Kenyans and doing that will get the Kenyan flag flying high!

Send the word Prezzo to 5626. Even the comely Tina Kaggia is in on the fanfare of getting Prezzo back home with the money:

Octopizzo at it again!

Octopizzo is at it again and it must be driving his haters crazy!

This time round he is the cover of next month’s upcoming Insyder Magazine. Haters can now hate his face upclose and personal as his star continues to rise and the shine bright!

And from the headline title, the hiphop maestro will be talking about more than just his love for hiphop and delving into how it’s his financial mainstay. I’d suggest that anyone who loves music, loves hiphop, wants to get into the game or is an aspiring hiphop mogul to have a closer look at the interview.

For now though, here is a picture of the cover:

BBA Update: Prezzo voted the most lively BBA Housemate!

so the eviction went down at the BBA House and once again, Team Kenya rose to the occassion!

But what wasn’t in all the hype and pomp of the show and was probably missed is the Big Brother poll carried out to ascertain who the rest of Africa would miss should they get evicted.

The poll had Kyle, Lady May, Prezzo and Jannette. And as we probably know by now, Kyle had the most votes from Africa but who do we the viewers consider the most lively and entertaining? Who else but our very own Kenyan lad Prezzo? Prezzo led with 39.38% of the votes and was closely followed by Lady May with 34.65%

Here is a screen shot of how the votes have been streaming in so far:

Janette Evicted From Big Brother! Prezzo Safe YET AGAIN

Janette was evicted today from Big Brother Africa. Prezzo’s name was the first to be mentioned in the eviction line-up, but Ike quickly revealed that he had been SAVED yet again by the public.

Janette lost out on the competition, despite upping the ante with her sexually charged antics. She adopted an alter-ego named ‘Lola’ who was apparently the one responsible for all her shenanigans, according to her post-eviction interview.

It seems our Kenyan boy is quite the resilient one. Despite getting nominated literally every week since Upville and Downville merged, Prezzo the president has always survived the evictions with no hassle. Surely that makes him one of the leading contenders for the top prize of 25million Kenyan Shillings, don’t you think?

Ruth Matete Wins Tusker Project Fame 5!

Ruth Matete has won Tusker Project Fame 5. The final order of contestants was:

1. Ruth

2. Doreen

3. Jackson

4. Joe

Ruth went away with a grand prize of 5 million Kenya shillings as well as a 10 million shilling recording contract with Universal music, despite many people’s doubts that her lack of ‘Hollywood looks’ might hinder her chances.

She was speechless as her name was revealed. She fell to the ground and began thanking God for everything. The judges were quick to remind her that pride comes before a fall, and that she should keep herself in check, despite her newfound fame. The losing contestants were graceful in defeat, and vowed to keep going in the music industry.

Rapper adapts Nas’ beats

Taking up an instrumental that another rap made a great track with, and use it in a new track of your own is nothing easy to do. Expectations from fans of the original instrumental user may just be too much.

This is the reason I was surprised to hear a Kenyan rapper by the name of Braso Rapmwanasanaa, lay his lyrics on this track. Remember, Nas‘ ‘Got yourself a gun‘ track? Well, this rapper just did his own version of the song and named it ‘Brassoz gun‘.

I have to say that the delivery is super. As for the rest, I’ll let you, the fan, judge. Have a listen to it below.

On TV, she appeared on Seventh Heaven, Nick Freno, Party of Five, Hanging With Mr. Cooper and many more. But her biggest show to date has to be on one of the most popular soap opera from the ’90s, Days Of Our Lives. The show started in the ’60s and went on for decades introducing teenage storylines which gave Ida a chance to do a total of 46 episodes.

On the show, she appeared as Georgia Delgado and enjoyed a good amount of screen time. Here is a clip the actor and singer shared. Watch out for her appearance from the 01:38 mark.

Mary J. Blige pays the BBA housemates a visit

A lot of international and local artists have visited the BBA house in virtual form and have motivated and amazed the housemates every time a new visitor shows up. Even Nas wasn’t left behind.

Today, the housemates could not believe their eyes when they saw RnB singer, Mary J. Blige on their screens after a long wait in the TV room. She had the same message as the rest of the celebrity visitors, “Keep doing all that you are doing for Africa. Fight hunger. Bring change.”

The housemates were even more astonished when Mary J. Blige called them all out, by NAME. The expression on each and every face in the house was priceless. Take a look at the video below.

Chiwawa’s new track to drop on Monday

Finally back on the works, Chiwawa is about to go hard on the music industry. Within a few months, Chiwawa’s name will be back on everyone’s lips as his songs are released one by one.

For his latest track, Chiwawa has collaborated with beautiful songbird, Wakesho. The track titled ‘Daima Milele‘ is set to be released this coming Monday and according to Chiwawa whom we conducted an interview with this week, this will be the kind of track that sticks on the charts for quite a while.

The song is about that kind of friendship that lasts forever, the peace within, and just pure consciousness.

The video which is currently being shot, will follow suit two weeks after the song has been released. I for one, just can’t wait.

Look-alike: Camp Mulla’s Taio Tripper & Jemedari

Taio Tripper and Jemedari are both rappers but they could not be any more different. Jemedari is a hardcore rapper who talks about social issues and highlights society’s ills though his music. Taio Tripper is a member of Camp Mulla, admittedly makers of happy, party-ish music. But with just the right angle, the two kind of look alike. Click on photo to enlarge.

‘The Prodigal’ Artiste Is Set For a Comeback With an Amazing Concert

This August the 4th 2012, musician Liron is set to introduce herself to the world as she performs her music, most of which are yet to be  recorded, much less heard before. The show dubbed “Soul Expressions by Liron: The Prodigal’s Diary Chapter” will take place at the Michael Joseph Center, Safaricom House, Nairobi from 4pm – 6pm.

A lover of art and a creator of the same in painting, poetry &, of course, music. Full of life and a lover of life itself. These are some of the statements that will linger in your mind when you cross paths with the prolific artiste Liron.

Driven by the passion and love for everything artistic, Liron expresses herself in art, poetry and music.

Liron, a Hebrew name meaning “My song, My Joy”, is the stage name of this gifted Singer/Songwriter whose style is predominantly Jazz and Soul.

Liron credits the Platform Music Project for opening doors of opportunity for her music career. Through this group she has met and interacted with key players in the Kenyan music scene such as Michel Ongaro, an amazing musician, multi-instrumentalist and music coach whose band, Sentaline Band, will be accompanying her during a planned event.

With a distinctively powerful and soulful voice, Liron expresses herself in well and poetically written music as is evident in the  acoustic version of her song “Prodigal’s Anthem” that she recently posted on her online accounts.

Accompanied by the very capable Sentaline Band headed by highly talented Michel Ongaro, Liron will showcase her music and at the same time display her poetry for all to read and relate to.

The show will also feature the exceptional music by Jason Ochola and Fadhili Itulya.

Remember the rapper who dissed Kenrazy? Watch them go head to head on stage

He has been in the Kenyan music industry for quite some time now, always seen beside his good friend and fellow rapper, Khaligraph Jones in more than one song.

Oksyde‘s last appearance was on Coolagang‘s cypher, People’s Choice Cypher, which is currently the most viewed Kenyan cypher on YouTube right now. On this cypher, Oksyde went H.A.M on Kenrazy, taking shots while maintaining his ill flow.

He recently showed up for the Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat contest and battled it out head-to-head with one of the rappers there. This was a lyrical massacre that I just can’t stop watching. Check it out below.

Ruth or Doreen? Who Would You Cast Your Vote For?

As Tusker Project Fame season 5  comes to a culmination this weekend, the battle lines are drawn as the remaining contestants drum up their fanbases to vote for them to win the top prize of Kshs. 5million and a recording deal with Universal Music Group.

Of particular highlight though will be pitting two strong contenders in the Tusker Academy at the moment against each other, for very different reasons.

Ruth Matete is arguably the strongest contender to take home the top slot, with her husky tone and electrifying performances set to arm her with a huge number of the votes. Competition has steadily been coming from the other contestant Jackson, considering the fact that his performances have been improving in leaps and bounds over the weeks that TPF5 has been going.

Viewers have witnessed the tremendous growth Ruth has gone through as well as seeing her confidence grow and the prowess with which she tackles her tasks and delivers when she is supposed to. Ruth managed to evade probation for most of the season though last week she had a taste of her chances of winning being on the line. The public saved her from eviction though as they overwhelmingly voted for her to stay in, a form of stamp of approval.

Tusker project fame 5 contestants Ruth Matete cast her vote during a previous eviction show as Joe Irankunda looks on

Doreen Nyawira was rightly titled the ‘Princess of Probation’ as she was virtually on probation for the better part of the season. The judges had little faith that she would last but it seems the audience is firmly with her as they consistently and convincingly voted for her each week to keep her in the Academy.

Speculators have said that the ‘ordinary girl’ angle that she’s been professing may very well be a tactic but viewers can relate to her easier because she comes from ‘simple’ beginnings and has made it this far into the competition. The public vote could very well go for her if it all comes down to the wire, but does she truly have the talent?

We’ve seen Doreen grow as well both in vocal delivery and performance so maybe we may just witness a shocker this weekend. Who are you voting for?

Epic. Top Canadian rapper and poet to perform in Kenya

Be sad no more. I know you have been seeing great international artists visiting and performing in East Africa and sadly, Uganda and Tanzania have been getting them all. Alas! We are now about to host one of the greatest rapper and poet from Canada, right here in Nairobi.

Thanks to Spark Africa and Kwani Trust, we will be privileged to witness Ian Kamau perform live at the Kwani Open Mic event on the 7Th of August. Great rapper/poet (Ian Kamau) performing at an equally great hip hop platform founded through hip hop’s open mic freestyle battles and performances, what more could we ask for?

Ian Mbugua was born in Toronto, Canada and no, he has no Kenyan roots at all. “But the name… what about the name?”…you are probably asking yourself right now. Well, his wise Trini father thought it precise to name his son, Kamau, a Kenyan name which means ‘Silent Warrior‘, and indeed a warrior he grew up to be. Lethal with the mic in hand. If you have not been blessed enough to hear some of his works, here, have a copy of his album (ONE DAY SOON) right here.

Ian Kamau will be landing on the Kenyan soil on the 1St of August and will enjoy his stay here until the 10Th of August, giving ample time for interviews, paid performances, charity performances, meaningful collaborations and basically exploring the Kenyan arts and life. Isn’t this awesome or what?

All we have to do now is wait.

Was the video of Chiwawa’s ‘Life Teaching’ stolen?

When Chiwawa‘s song, ‘Life Teaching‘ came out a few years ago, it was an instant success. The video was very well illustrated and complimented the lyrics as well.

However, some allegations came afloat that the video of that song was not entirely original and that the some of the scenes were actually taken from a South African movie and no credits were given whatsoever.

In our recent interview with Chiwawa, we got the whole story behind this allegations and came to understand everything. So should you as a fan. Here, take a look at the interview and find out the real story behind it.

Part 3: How Esther Arunga Revealed She Lived In a Room Full of Rats

After Esther Arunga settled at The Friend’s house in Dubai, she got comfortable enough to reveal some startling details about how life was for her in Kenya. She said they had been living in a single room house in Lukenya, which was full of rats. They always made sure the baby ate but it meant they had to go hungry at times.

The Friend and her husband were sympathetic and tried their best to make them as comfortable as they could. A fortnight after their arrival, Quincy gathered everyone one morning to show them an article that had appeared in The Star’s Website. The heading: Esther Arunga Staying With Friends in Dubai.

Quincy took it out on their hosts for betraying them and running to the media with stories about their financial situation. The Friend was the one who had faciliated Esther’s pre-natal clinic visit and so he claimed she was the only one who could have known that she was two months due. Apparently, Esther herself had no idea how long she had before that clinic visit.

The article on The Star Website was published on 17th February, 2012 by Grace Kerongo. The article has details which were provided by an unknown source and which is corroborated by various other sources. One comment was left by a commenter known as Daily Telegraph, which has since been confirmed as an account set up by Quincy to “report” on stories regarding the couple. “Daily Telegraph” takes it out on Ms. Kerongo for “manufacturing lies” and even threatened with a lawsuit.

On investigating, The Friend found out that prior to The Star, the news was broken by Sydney News. In the original article, which had terrible grammar, The Friend’s workplace and details on how she contacted the media with the story was published. That is when it dawned on her that Sydney News was written by Quincy himself in a bid to put a wedge between Esther and The Friend.

He was probably angered by the fact that the story had now been picked up by a wider circulation paper. This was just the beginning of the games Quincy would play to undermine the very same people who had helped him out of a difficult situation and even hosted them abroad. Keep it Ghafla! for more on the story.

Chiwawa talks about Kenyan cyphers and Alex’s betrayal

After a long time away from the music industry, Chiwawa is finally back and is set to reclaim his throne. Being one of Kenya’s best lyricists of all time, you know too well that his opinion matters a great deal.

We recently had an interview with this legendary rapper and got to know a thing or two about him. He also gave his piece about Kenyan hip hop cyphers and the originality of it, seeing that most of the cyphers are not actually freestyled as they should be.

Further more, Chiwawa talks about BBA’s Alex betrayal and we find out that he is a full #teamprezzo fan.

Check it out.

Tha Aliens Have Landed Again…Presenting Cure 4 Hangiz

It’s Tha Aliens have released their latest track, Cure 4 Hangiz. The song is a follow-up to the It’s Tha Aliens previous release, I Like The Way You Move.

The first verse is done by Songa, who also featured on I Like The Way You Move and Drunk Dialling. He starts it off with a Swahili flow, typical of UFFlow music, which gaves way to Arnold’s laid back chorus.

Sanjei joins the track in English, with a sprinkling of Swahili in a faster paced and punchy flow. Additional vocals provided by the very talented singer, rapper and producer, Dora.

Sanjei lays out a kick-sparse and chip-heavy dance beat that will surely appeal to the new age of electronic music fans. Ironically, Cure 4 Hangiz would make a great club or party dance track. A cool thing you can do with the song is listen to it over a good pair of headsets. The track has been engineered to sound as if it’s flowing through the ears. Check out Cure 4 Hangiz below.

Kenrazy and Sosuun Attack Pastor Njoroge

Joining the number of Kenyans who were outraged with the Esther Mwende/Pastor Njoroge saga which has gripped the media in recent times, artistes Kenrazy, Sosuun and Caltoz Jinamizi add their vocals to the debate.

In a brand new release titled ‘Ule Pastor’, the artistes seek to sensitize the public on the issue of some rogue and self proclaimed ‘men of the faith’ taking advantage of their congregation and professing to preach the word of God while doing dasterdly deeds behind the scenes.

The track features footage of the NTV exclusive report fusing it with some witty ryhmes and lyrics which will leave you in deep reflection. Have a listen to ‘Ule Pastor’ here first…

Nigeria and Kenya hook up again. This time, on the mic

Kenya and Nigeria seem to be having really good relations lately in various fields of entertainment, the most obvious and popular being the Prezzo and Goldie relationship.

This is awesome considering that we are among the top countries in the continent is so many aspects (ignoring South Africa). Wyre had earlier on collaborated with one of the top Nigerian rappers known as MI and this set the pace for more Kenya-Nigeria collaborations.

Another one has just hit the airwaves yet again. Kenyan upcoming rapper, Evano Shezol and Nigerian music group, J2P have brought together their music expertise to create this new-school hip hop track titled ‘Hustle No More‘.

Being all about the hustle, the track is the first of many more to come. Have a listen.

Chiwawa: Frasha shouldn’t be on the judge’s seat for ‘Don’t Break The Beat’

Chiwawa is now the second rapper to come out with claims that P Unit’s Frasha should not be one of the judges in the ongoing Nokia: Don’t Break The Beat competition.

The first rapper was rather angrier than Chiwawa. Khaligraph Jones made it clear that Frasha should be on the other side of the judge’s table, and that is the stage. This was apparently the reason why Khaligraph Jones did not participate in this competition.

Both rappers made their stand in their Ghafla interviews. Chiwawa backed up Khaligraph Jones’ opinion by stating that Frasha is simply not lyrically qualified to be among judges like Nazizi and Point Blank, with no offence at all to Frasha.
