Jalang’o’s Advice To Fame Whores

Jalang’o gives off this vibe that all is hanky dory with the world. I mean, he’s always cracking jokes about all and sundry, about everything under the clouds’ breath, so it does come as a bit of a shocker when he decides to play the role of big brother and guide youngings with a rather firm hand.

Today, he was ‘visibly irked’ that he felt the need to give advice to the peopel who keep asking him how they can become famous quickly. This is what he had to say..

Everyday I thank God for everything that I have been able to achive….It took hardwork, patience and determination.without this then you are nothing…Why all this boring lecture? I get all requests from friends and fans who would like to join the acting, theatre industry..It is good to know that you would like to join us but why arent you ready to be patient? You cant come to the theatre and think you will go on tv immediately or be on radio immeaditely..all of you who come to me or ask for the chance are always asking to be on tv or radio…

So you are not even passionate about this..all you want is to be famous. Jalas, how can I join Papa, how can I be in MALI, I want to be in Inspekta Mwala……really? Let me take you step by step of this job…The first thing you have to do is come to the theatre for auditions…there is never a particular time for auditions..they are always conducted un-announced so any budding actor must come to the theatre everyday, hoping that you’ll see audition dates on the notice board…the first step is to audition for Setbooks…then from your great perfomance on this lower stage, a Play director or producer will see you and you’ll get the chance to act in a play that is not setbook..from here your great perfomance will see you get a chance on tv…basically its one step after another…from setbooks…to plays…to tv…thats the way! When you get the chance to be on stage perform like it is your only chance, your first chance and your last chance because you never know who is in the audience watching! GOOD LUCK..REMEMBER YOU DONT HAVE TO KNOW ANYONE IF YOU HAVE A GREAT TALENT….YOUR TALENT WILL SPEAK FOR ITSELF!”

Wow, I really have nothing else to add to those words.

Meet The Guy Behind Money Lover, Fresh All Day, and Young Jeezy’s Way Too Gone.

I’m one of those guys who gets fascinated by every aspect of a song from songwriter, time signature, key, the singer’s voice range, the video producer sheesh!! It irks me until I find know!!

Well yesterday, I had the pleasure of introducing you to Nanjira’s new video. It became our biggest story, I kid you not, y’all clearly relish drama!! The one aspect I left out because it deserved a page spread of its own was the guy behind the camera. Andrew Macharia is cray. As is for real this guy on that eagle soar. Nanjira by the way, gave me a nice scoop, I’ll share that later.

andy_2.jpeg

So I had to seek A. out, it was inevitable. This is what he shared with me. ‘I was in the studio with Blackman, and he was playing some of his new songs for me and “Walking” happen to be one of them. Soon as I heard it, I just knew this was one of those records I have to shoot. It was a very different sound from what we usually hear locally. And for me, I loved what the song was about. I wrote the treatment the next day and sent it over to Nanjira..”

Andy Macharia is a Kenyan American, 23yrs young. Hailing from Los Angeles CA, six months ago he packed his bags and moved to Kenya. While I’d describe him as a picasso of videos, he self effacingly calls himself a professional music video and commercial director. He went on to tell me that growing up, he wanted to be involved in film, but didn’t know how to go about it. At the ripe old age of 18, he moved to Los Angeles, got an internship with a production house, and met his mentor who turned him into a director per excellence.

andy_3.jpeg

Upon completion of his education, he stayed at that production house, and made his way up from a production assistant to director. That set him on destiny’s path,  handling commercials, brand content & music videos. As a director, he caressed huge projects from clients like Microsoft Bing, KIA etc It gets better….record companies such as Universal Music Group, Warner Bros & Sony Music also sought out his midas touch. Proffessionally, he has worked with American mainstays like Frankie j, Julian Write and Jasmine Villegas. He btw, shot Young Jeezy’s way too gone. *faints*

The interview shoulda ended here. It didn’t. He went on to tell me that in Africa, he’s worked with HardBlanc (Angola) Radio & Weasel and Navio (Uganda). What about Kenya you ask? He shot Bamboo’s 25flow, Sauti Sol’s money lover, Kanja’s paradise, K-Letta and Amina’s paint the town red as well as Camp Mulla’s Fresh all day. He is the man behind Rachel Marete’s I million bob video Kelele.  Quintessential.

Need A Plan For Saturday? This Has To Be IT!

Santa Fe is usually kicking on Saturdays. they have this whole grown and sexy vibe going on with their clientele but just for kicks, they’ve decided to switch it up a notch or 3,000!

This Saturday, they’ll have 3 DJs spinning it on the 1 and 2s the usual DJs Fab and Dj Fresh but they’ll also have DJ Enruff on rotation. The lads will be kicking nothing but the sickest Afro, House and Pop. That basically means they have a serious vendetta against your feet that they’ll be settling with you on the dance floor.

And because i know just how thirsty dancing makes you, how about i go right ahead and talk about the drinks on offer huh? Well, the drinks are reasonably priced with local beers 200/- and Heineken is at 270/-. You can check out the rest of the price list here.

And just on a side note, Santa Fe featured last year on a list of clubs that have the best music. Read the rest of the list here.

And here are photos of how it’s gone down on other nights!

Blogger Itumbi Accused of Hacking IEBC Systems

He has been branded a controversial journalist and blogger not because of scandalous acts but because Dennis Itumbi has unearthed some of the dirty work that goes unreported.

After recently admitting that he was part of President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign team, Itumbi was yesterday brought to task for allegedly hacking the electoral body’s server to manipulate the results in favor of Uhuru. If you remember well, last week there rumours that the servers at IIEBC were hacked into and that’s why the electronic transmission of provisional results was halted leading to the tally of the results manually.

In an inbox message sent to the blogger’s Facebook page, an unnamed individual claimed that the blogger hacked the IEBC server and will soon be exposed in court (referring to the election petition by CORD coalition). Without distorting anything, here’s the message verbatim;

“Dennis just tell me the truth, why did you hack the IEBC server? why did you use your skill and talent to deny Kenyans their right? Don’t deny because the whole thing has been traced to your number 0724*****6, you hacked and am sure you will be exposed in court, Eng.Rege will testify and show how you helped rig in Jubilee, History will not spare, remember he who lives by the sword dies by the sword…he who hacks, will also be hacked to death, be careful and just know you will not get away with the mischief, you are a hopeless idiot, a fool without a proper job, you have no future, you hacked but we will win the case…..go to hell” Well…bring it on is all I say to you @fake name and if you mean what you say use your real name and use an account that is existent….

However, Itumbi response was not deterred as evident in a response to one of his friends. “…many before me have undergone worse threats from real people…fake people cannot be given any weight…I remain strong and shall not be distracted,” asserted Itumbi.

Larry Asego Leaks Photos of The New GFC Season

The 3rd Season of the Guinness Football Challenge was launched late last year with Ogopa’s sexy singers, Marya and Avril gracing the event. After the launch the organizers took the show around the country for auditions with Nakuru being one of the stopovers (check out the photos).

The show is an exciting platform through which lovers of football get a unique opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and passion for the world’s most favorite sport. But after all that, Guinness Football Challenge season 3 is just about to hit your screens. Yesterday, one of the show’s host Larry Asego leaked some of the behind-the-scenes photos with his co-host, Flaviana from Uganda.

Watch out for the show on a TV station near you. For now enjoy these photos:

Kenyan Stars Who Began Their Careers At Phoenix Theatres.

So today I wrote about the new play at Phoenix theatres, and mentioned some big people whose careers were birthed at Phoenix theatres.

Well as I did that story I started to compile a list and the names are quite impressive. If Phoenix is the darkness kissed sky, then its offspring are the galaxy of stars permeating it!! Some of them I’ve met, but nonetheless, I have a rather long list. Bear with me.

http://a2.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/profile01/120/96880a0ca70d47c39235a9a1ff981f00/p.jpg

1. Barbara Guantai: If you attended January’s version of B&W, then you know Barbara. She was holding her own against Suzanne Owiyo, Naomi Wachira and Micasa. Singer, songwriter, composer and arranger as well as a renowned painter, this girl is on fire! She’s a city girl however, armed with a  bachelor’s degree in Government and French Language from Saint Lawrence University New York State. She has several albums to her name, one of which was recorded when the globe trotter spent a year In France recording her music.

2. Caroline Nderitu: Does this poem need an introduction? Her Bio reads ‘t the age of 4. This year she marks 28 years on stage! She studied Bachelors of Home Economics in Foods at Kenyatta University, Nairobi. To her name are three books – Caroline Verses, Play Your Drum and Love Only. Having performed around Africa, Europe and Asia, she has now specialized in writing and performing at social and corporate functions. Being a motivation speaker, she also facilitates a children’s club and  runs communication/presentation skills workshops for professionals.

3.Charles Kiarie: While I couldn’t glean much about this accomplished thespian, he is currently a presenter at Capital Fm. He has been a media mainstay for a while now so you know he’s still on top of his name.

4. Chao Mwatela: Usha!!!!!!!!  Okay I’m calm. Chao burst onto the stage in 2003 when she clinched the leading role in the musical Sarafina, at age 21. She is arguably the best actress this country has ever had, and rumour has it that she can also outsing some of those people we hail as musicians. Yes, she was part of the Out of Africa team that was in Europe for three months. By the way anyone who can be in the same musical with Ameelina, Neema Ntalel, Antonesoul and Diana Mayonde is the ish. I said it.

5. Chris Bittok: If you haven’t heard this man play, then you have no idea how divine a saxophone can sound when placed in the hands of a master. This man, can do no wrong music wise. I wonder what an instrumental duet between him and Christine The Jazzist Kamau would sound like.

6. Karen Somoin Lucas: More popularly known as Kaz, this woman seemingly courts controversy like a bee is drawn to nectar. That said, she is so awesomely talented. Gorgeous voice, dashing looks, and to top it all off, has a show called Kenyan Woman that seeks to showcase the amazing tributes of women in Kenya.

7. Maqbul Mohammed: The leading character in Walking by Nanjira, is one of those articulate, witty people that just deserves to be on radio. He acts when he’s not wowing listeners at Capital Fm’s breakfast show.

8. Joy Mboya: This lean lady has that distinct shaven look with a couple of dreadlocks to add icing to the cake. One of the pioneer singers in Kenya, she now runs The Godown centre.

9. Ian Mbugua: Do you need me to give you his bio? I didn’t think so.

10. John Sibi-Okumu: This is another man who does not need an introduction. He is an extraordinary individual this one.

11. June Gachui: I’m gonna do a a full profile on this woman, because Lord!!! This woman has pipes! As in for real June is one of those amazingly versatile singers with a tone so sultry and a voice range so huge calling her a vocal powerhouse pays no justice to this woman’s talents. And yes, on top of being a singer and lawyer, she is also the chairperson of CAMP, the association that caters to composers, arrangers and music producers.

11. Lizz Njaga Konstantaras: This is another actress who is super talented!! I think she was or has launched Kenya’s first reality show.

Others include Cajetan Boy renowned playwright, Debbie Asila of tattuu and Venus Fm, Lorna Irungu and Suzanne Gachukia, who gave you Subsaharan Records and Camp Mulla.

NTV Highlights and Shames Hate Mongers On Social Media

Walking on the streets you won’t experience any form of ethnic-fuelled hatred but wait till you log on into Facebook or Twitter; that’s when you are hit by tribalism. In fact I overheard somebody say that post elections violence was not evident physically this time round after our national elections but the post elections violence has been very evident on social media, which I tend to agree with.

With the situation requiring immediate action, NTV yesterday night during the prime time news raised a red flag on what the station describes as the audacity of tribalism by a section of Kenyans who have taken breathtaking ethnic hatred to the Internet. The TV station took the bold and unapologetic step to unmask these shameless elements.

NTV also learnt that a good number of the hate mongers are in the diaspora where they have taken to the social media from Facebook to Twitter to spit ethnic hatred. The station wondered how all these escapes the notice of Mzalendo Kibunjia and “his occasionally dormant National Cohesion and Integration Commission”.
One of the station’s journalists, Sharon Baranga, even took to the street to find out Kenyans opinions on the spew on social media and according to her, “Kenyans have just three words for purveyors of hate on social media, SHAME ON YOU.”

This comes just a couple of days after comedian Eric Omondi hit out at hatemongers on Facebook in a charged post.

Blackstar Entertainment Owner Rewarded Handsomely By TNA

It’s barely three days since Uncle Chim Tuna told you how TNA was planning to reward top entertainers who were part of its campaign team. Well, the party is now rewarding the team behind the party’s recent victory in the just concluded General Elections with nominations to various positions.

In a move seen to uphold the party’s promise of giving youthful members leadership opportunities, TNA’s campaign team led by party chairman Johnson Sakaja has been listed for nomination to Parliament and the Senate. Among those to benefit from the nominations is the founder of Blackstar Entertainment and TNA Director of Communications, Machel Waikenda. Machel joined #TeamUhuru last year to strengthen the campaign team.

Machel Waikenda was born on April 23rd 1981. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix, bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida and a Diploma of Arts from Santa Fe College. Machel also holds a certificate from the iHUB M-Lab: Africa’s first mobile incubation digital hub. He is a commercial pilot, former Kenya airways employee with over 2000 hours on the Boeing 737 and 767 Jets.

Machel began his career as a pilot trainee in Kenya airways in 2005 and was promoted to be a first Officer (FO) six months later. After flying the Boeing 737 and 767 jets for 5 years, Machel quit his lucrative flying career to concentrate on his entrepreneurial endeavors. He decided to focus on the company that he founded in 2006 called Blackstar Entertainment where he sits on the board of directors.

Famous Mugithi Singer Now A County Rep

With the General Election more or less done and dusted, winners of various positions have been declared and among them are musicians and former TV personalities. But you may have not heard about them because not so much has been said about the positions that most of them hold.

Joining the expanding list of artists who have plunged into politics and successfully clinched different political seats is Newton Kariuki better known in music scene as Newton Karish or Short But Tough Karish. For those who have no idea who Newton Karish is here’s a heads up; Newton Karish is a renowned Mugithi singer whose song “Muthoni Kifagio” took the country by storm back in 2009.

Now that we are on the same page, Newton Karish was recently elected as the county representative for Muminji Ward in Mbeere North. Karish asserted that he is up for the task and ready to represent his county satisfactorily.

Karish now joins the likes of former BBA representative Milicent Mugadi who is also now a county representative and former Tausi star and Coro FM presenter Sabina Wanjiru Chege.

Here’s Newton Karish’s “Muthoni Kifagio”;

Robert Alai Finally Finds A Real Job

It would seem that TheSstandard Media Group has decided to do what i believed to be unthinkable: They have hired the venom tongued Robert Alai!

That’s right, Alai who once infamously tweeted that he wants to see more Kileleshwa residents violently robbed and possibly even raped now works for the Standard’s new subsidiary “The Nairobian” where he pens false articles no doubt about how I was at Blankets and Wines f*nger*ng girls with reckless abandon!

Kudos Standard, I tilt my hat to you for such an impeccable decision to hire Robert Alai. And no, I’m not being sarcastic. The chap is highly intelligent and controversial. The type of face a brand can be packaged around.

Jaguar Emerges Even Wealthier From Endorsing Uhuru Kenyatta!

By now, it’s no secret that Jaguar was in team Uhuru aye? If that comes as a shock to you, you have my permission to perform seppuku! No, don’t! I’m just kidding. Or am i?

Anyway, Jaguar endorsed Uhuru Kenyatta and would perform at his rallies for a fee whispered to be 300,000/- per show from my sources at TNA who have asked to remain anonymous. Given that he performed almost every weekend for close to a month and a half, that is quite the tidy sum.

But that’s not all he got from his association with TNA. According to the Monday Blues, Jaguar was awarded a Range Rover for his troubles and a full security detail. And as if that isn’t enough, Jaguar is also about to be rewarded with a plum state job. Read about the other top Kenyan artists anticipating plum posts in the Uhuru government.

Talk about from rags to riches! It’s hard to believe Jaguar once was a tout who lived here.

Man Rekindles Flame With Ex-Wife At Phoenix Theatres.

Phoenix theatres in my eyes are one of those Unsung heroes like Makadem, who’ve spent themselves tirelessly on behalf of the arts, to virtually little or no recognition save for a select few. Seemingly. Seemingly.

Alot of the big names that vain-sounding wights like me would wanna name drop, like Jimmy Gathu, Nick Ndeda, Nice githinji et al, Phoenix theatres midwifed them into the glaring spotlight. Most recently, they opened their doors to the cast of Nairobi half life, them being the backdrop for major scenes in that captivating Nairobi narrative as written here. And oh, who can forget the amazing play John Sibi-Okumu staged there just last month, read about that here too.

Watch John Sibi Okumu's Play Before It Ends Its Run

Well they are back again, this time with a play aptly titled ‘Fathers’ Day’, seeing as Mothers’ day is upon us. Now if you tune in to Maina in the morning, then you probably heard today’s discussion about the ‘boy child’ being ‘endangered’ too. So yes, celebrate fathers….Moving along swiftly.

The synopsis is simple really, “It’s a cold winters evening and bitter, irascible divorcee Henry is enjoying a Scotch and some classical music in glorious solitude. He is soon disturbed, however, by the unwelcome appearance of his son Mathew, bringing with him his new girlfriend, the unappealing punk/Goth Christine. Mathew is obviously keen for a reconciliation with his father, but Henry is quite happy the way things are, and sparks soon fly—but this is just the beginning, for who should arrive next but Henry’s ex-wife, Mathews mother, Sue! As the cold night wears on Henry and Sue can’t help but reck over the ashes of their seemingly dead relationship and to their surprise the faint glow of a new tenderness develops between them, Before long Henry is facing some important decisions….”

And speaking of Nairobi half life, did you know they were nominated for the oscars, and that Wendell Pierce even tweeted about it? Wendell Who? Again you should know people!! He played Baltimore police officer, Bunk Mooreland, on the hit HBO show, The Wire. Read that here.

Holy Dave Ventures into A New Career

With an established name in the music industry thanks to a thriving music career, Gospel rapper Holy Dave has decided it’s time to spread his wings and fly. Just a fortnight after taking his charity event to Braeside School, HD is now venturing into new business.

Realizing how much  many production houses have solely focused on music and video production and left the artiste to struggle out of the maze we call an industry, HD has decided to co-invested in a production studio. Through his entity, High Def Music, HD is partnering with Fullhouse Music, based at the Fullhouse Music facility at Hurlingham Plaza in a joint venture that will offer audio recording services and strategy & marketing consultancy.

High Def Music and Fullhouse Music intend to use their skills and expertise not only to provide quality production but also to provide affordable value adding strategy consultancy services to enable their clients to achieve their full potential in the industry using their talent and the available resources.

Changes Has Something Epic Planned for Tonight!

Where are my party people at? Yeah, i see you! hopefully i’ll see you all at Changes tonight! why? Well, allow me to give you more than enough reasons to step out tonight.

For starters, the prices are just right. You won’t wake up with a raging headache and an empty wallet. Just the raging headache -but that’s a steal after a night of fun.

Another awesome thing about Changes other than the prices which you can get from reading this article here is the location. Changes is tucked in snugly right at the heart of Westlands Electric Avenue. That means that not only is it accessible to those with cars, the matatus drop you right at the doorstep. If you’ve ever gone out without a car you know just how awesome that simple fact is.

Changes_Pub.jpg

Another awesome thing is the security staff. These guys don’t play around. They are thorough but they are also friendly. These are some of the only bouncers who are actually professional about their work. unlike at Skyluxx where a bouncer was recently relieved of his duties for being heavy handed. Read about that here.

Another reason is the sick music being spun by Kaytrixx the Entertainer. This lad knows how to keep a party on it’s feet. So forget all your worries for a couple of hours as you twist and gyrate! Do you really need more excuses to step out tonight? I think not!

Come and have a wicked one with your Uncle and the rest of the Ghafla crew!

Azonto and Antenna Singer Fuse ODG Coming To Kenya!

Ladies and gentlemen, music lovers alike, i have some good news for you, Fuse ODG of the antenna fame is coming to Kenya. Granted, there have been alot of false starts in this saga but i have it from reliable sources that the lad will be in the country in May.

Apparently, the Ghanaian star was being sought for a performance during president elect Uhuru Kenyatta’s inauguration but couldn’t commit due to other engagements. But event organisers and a top entertainer came together to make the May performance possible. Read about why he cancelled the other scheduled performance here.

That means you should get your azonto in check so when he comes through, you won’t be left busting false moves on your own.

Raphael Tuju Files For Divorce, Offers 200,000/- Alimony Per Month

One time Information & Communication Minister, prominent politician and media guru Raphael Tuju has filed for separation after his 27 years old marriage took a dramatic turn in 2011.

In a sworn affidavit, Tuju says that he can no longer live with his wife Ruth Akinyi Wanjare, for openly cheating on him with a young GSU officer. His other allegations are that Ruth is abusive and violent.
Judicial Separation Cause No 33 of 2013 filed at the High Court Nairobi lists Ruth as the first respondent and Anthony Ogunda, her alleged lover, as the second respondent.

Tuju claims he has photographic evidence and telephone messages of the alleged affair, listed as Exhibit RT1. Most of these is believed to have been compiled by a private detective hired by the former foreign affairs minister some months ago.

“Sometime in the year 2011 I learnt that my wife was adulterous band (had) become very abusive and disrespectful to an extent of playing her adulterous life even at the knowledge of my children and workers. While I was away from home attending official and business duties, wherein I am mostly required to be out of the country or when I am away in politics, I learnt that my wife had a partner boyfriend who she used to commit adultery with,” says Tuju in court documents filed by Laichena Mugambi & Company Advocates.

Tuju and Ruth got married on November 15, 1986, and together they have 3 children, 26-year-old Mano, a pilot, and 24-year-old fraternal twins, Alma, who is studying for her masters in Melbourne and Yma who is working in Sydney.

In his petition, Tuju claims that Ruth has gone as far as bringing Anthony to his home in Karen, and at one point rented him an apartment in Ngong. Court documents detail that reconciliation efforts have failed, as Ruth continued with her adultery despite promising to stop. She further started to drink excessively and had become abusive.
He adds that they had been sleeping in different bedrooms for over one year, before the wife left their Karen home on February 8.

Anthony is said to have shamelessly called Tuju and his children inquiring about Ruth. On February 8, Tuju says that Anthony called his eldest son demanding to know how his mother was. Ruth had been admitted to hospital.
He is also said to have once threatened Tuju; a matter that is still under investigation.

In seeking separation, Tuju is offering Ruth a monthly maintenance allowance of KSh200,000 and to continue paying her balance of the KSh180,000 bank car loan in two monthly installments of KSh90,000. He expresses fears that if she is given more money than that, she will use it to “maintain her jobless young man”.
He is also offering to pay for any medical bills her wife may incur.

In the sworn affidavit, Tuju says that he can bear with his wife’s condition, but cannot tolerate “her young disrespectful and mannerless boyfriend.”  He adds that he intends to start a restaurant business, which he fears the wife may interfere with if the separation wishes are not granted.

Tuju holds a Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. He has a successful track record in the private sector as founder and Director of Ace Communications Company and has interests in the real estate sector. Of his noteworthy accomplishments he has worked as a Television Producer with several documentary films to his credit and earning the distinction of being the first TV Producer in Africa to win an International Emmy award for a TV production.

He was Producer and Director of several documentaries, Radio and TV commercials for international agencies, public sector institutions and private sector bodies. He was also worked as a columnist for Local Newspapers notably the East African Standard and as an Anchor for TV News in the late 1980s and early part of the 1990s on a part-time basis.

What’s The Connection between Mirfat And Choices Baricho Road?

Last week, Choices was aflame thanks to the amaze balls Dela. And this week, they have shifted gears!! They packed their bags, bid us adieu and headed to ‘Ocha.’ Figuratively speaking of-course.

I can’t decide which Villagers song I love most, in contention is Wa me and Someday featuring Atemi. Then there’s Kenchic!!!! Then again I feel so ignorant right now, koz I can’t distinctly tell you where Chris Adwar tails off and The villagers spring up!!

Good for me and you btw, that answer shall be answered tonight when they take to the stage. And rock you they shall, because this five piece band knows their stuff and have zilch qualms about giving it to you like it’s christmas. And no I don’t believe in santa claus focus! Ofcourse they were the Tusker All stars official band, so fault lines here, only seamless sensational stuff.

Image

The 11-piece band formed in 2005, fronted by one of East Africa’s leading producers, Adwar. The band consists of Chris Adwar – Keyboard/Singer/Songwriter/M.D, Kenny Nyagah -Drums , Asaph Uzele – Bass guitar , Davie Omamu– Lead Guitar ,Moses Odumbe – Acoustic Guitar, Tim Riungu -Saxophone, Moses Watatua- Trumpet, Julius Kibere – Trumpet, Albert Obaga – Trumpet, Jobie Mtukampuni – BV/Songwriter, Jordan Karanja – BV , Kokan Keleue-BV. Apart from their manager Pauline Macharia, its an all guy outfit. Testasterone they say, is the ‘bane’ of music’s existence so yes, energy in copius amounts is what you should expect.

They dubbed their sound beng’eng’e, sing in Dholuo, Swahili and English, and their tantalizing offering is indigenous. I think. Purposely benga, it’s been kept in a nice marinade of high-life, mbalax, Kwela and other exotic sounding genres. Yum! These guys have headlined events like Spread The Love festival with Kirk Franklin, Rift Valley Festival, Gatwich Festival with Emmanuel Jal, Sawa Sawa Festival, Blankets & Wines, as well as Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival with Freshly Ground.

Some of you are ‘obstinate’, so I’ll just throw in one last surprise, rumour has it that Dan ‘Chizi’ Aceda and Aaron ‘Crucial Keys’ Rimbui are set to perform as well!! Now if that doesn’t seal the deal for you, I’m quitting my job.

Now back to the quizlike headline, did you figure it out? “Siendi kenchic…pengine java…siendi Jevanjee, pengine regency..”

Celebrating Classic FM’s Unsung Hero -Wakanai The Madman!

I have occasionally listened to Classic as i’m sure most of you do – especially if you use public transportation. And one person has always found a way to colour even the most boring stories. And when the stories are already colourful, he finds a way to add even more colour in his distinct cantankerous manner.

I’m talking about Big Poppa Pumping himself. The loud mouth who always insists on using his mother tongue when his vocabulary runs out of expressive English words. This chap almost always has a word to get in edgewise and it’s always hilarious.

But what do you know about Wakanai save for his booming voice, country charm, imposing aura and love for dispensing bitter truths? Well, for starters, he’s married. Yep! the chap who has made a hobby out of brow beating women is actually happily married.

He also has a Facebook page that has over 34,000 likes! And all that from being a royal pain on Classic – the man women love to hate.

But when all is said and done, no morning discussion is complete without hearing Wakanai’s opinion. Although for the record i hate it when he goes off on a tangent in his mother tongue leaving me hanging! I mean, how would you like it if i started writing phrases in pidgin and Ibo?

And the chap is just as controversial online as he is whenever he calls. Here are some updates he has posted online:

“By a show of likes on this post, how many people are going to have sex tonight?”

WAKANAI.jpg

But with that said, here is another article he creeped up into. And now here are some photos from the wedding he had last year:

And with that, chin up, stiff upper lip and all that and get to your trenches to battle out another day either at school or on that job you so hate! but i have some good reads that should help you with that:

The Level Headed Kenzo’s Words Of Advice.

Remember last week when I went into detail concerning the reasons why Kenzo is celibate? That sparked quite the debate, between proponents and opponents of that bold stance.

Incase you missed it, here is what I had to say.

Well today he had a challenge for his fans. He wrote and I quote, “Not all men are sex driven, not all women are money hungry; You’re approached that way because that’s what your spirit invites.” Those words are weighty with wisdom lads and lasses, clearly this man has a good head on his shoulders. if you are a believer in the law of attraction, then this words are akin to the gospel truth.

Again, I wish him well on his journey to finding himself, and invariably, his queen Makeda. I wonder if ladies are still hustling him like I reported here.

Kenzo Clarifies His No Sex Stance Yet Again

Uhuru Kenyatta’s 22 year old Speech Writer Featured on BBC.

So, I was stoked to write the story about Julie Wango’ombe, the poet who penned President Uhuru Kenyatta’s acceptance speech. *Jaw drops to the floor again.*

You know the drill by now, if you haven’t read it, I’m more than happy to remind you, find it here. Well this amazing ‘younging’ has been featured on BBC. Sigh. Watch that here, we gotta give credit where it’s due. Julie by the way happens to be Linus Gitahi’s daughter, CEO of Nation Media Group. The apple eveidently, doesn’t fall from the tree.

Do You Know About This Michael Jackson Song In Which Kiswahili Is Used?

The song starts with the Kiswahili language phrase “Nakupenda pia, nakutaka pia, Mpenzi we!” (I love you too, I want you too, my love!); and was a hit song in the late 80s. Well, it called “Liberian Girl”.

The song is off MJ’s “Bad” album and was released in 1987 and to-date it has not lost its lustre. The song was written as early as 1983 and was among those considered for The Jacksons’ Victory album as it was reworked and rewritten for Bad.

The words “Nakupenda pia, nakutaka pia, mpenzi we”, were not sung by MJ but by South African singer Letta Mbulu. Directly translated to English from Kiswahili, the lingua franca of East and Central Africa, the phrase means “I love you also, I want you also, you my love” which is grammatically incorrect. According to pundits, the song could alternatively have been phrased as “Nakupenda, nakutaka, mpenzi wangu” i.e. “I love you, I want you, my love”.

However, the same pundits acknowledge MJ saying the phrase was a big honour to the entire East & Central Africa back then, to have and to hear Kiswahili in one of Michael Jackson’s legendary productions.

Galileos Hosts the Bass Playing Silk Queen Tonight.

Ever been to Galileos on Wednesday or Thursday and seen a lady deftly playing the bass like it ain’t no thang? Then you have seen Judith Njuguna in her element. If not, her name may not ring a bell unless you are active in the musical circles. That, in no way takes away from the awesomeness that is embodied by this lady.

Remember Sage? Sage was a part of the Jazz Girls, all female musical outfit that is all kinds of awesome that included Judith. Judith by the way, used to be the bassist for Valerie Kimani, introduced to her by Joseph Hellon, the owner of Jether Music School of music where she tutors. Judith plays the bass, the double bass, the piano, guitar, drums and to top it all off, sings!! Sema super woman!! And she’s very adept at all of them, nothing of that jack of all trades and a mistress of none claptrap. She turned that saying on it’s head eons ago. By the way I’ve only met one other person who plays the double bass, one.

Tonight, and every Wednesday,  you have the opportunity to see this maestro on stage with the Silk Notes. The band will today will be celebrating Kenya’s peaceful elections outcome during Silk Fusion at Gallileo Lounge, Waiyaki Way, Westlands from 8pm. Free entry! Go and get blown away. Silk notes consists of Amon on keys, Chege on drums, Eddy on guitar, Scott on violin and Judith on the bass and double bass.

Government Now Targets Foreign Journalists

The Government has issued notice to foreign journalists warning them that they risk prosecution if they do not obtain valid press cards from the Department of Information.

According to the Daily Nation, the Director of Information Joseph Olewe Owiti said journalists planning to be in the country for a short period of up to three months should be issued with special passes while those deployed in the country for a period exceeding three months will have to be issued with a work permit.

Foreign journalists have also been warned against making films for public exhibition or sale within or outside Kenya without a proper licence. The head of Film Services Ernest Kerich said that during the recently concluded General Election, foreign journalists applied for and were issued with press cards to cover the election.

“The accreditation was only for the purposes of news coverage and not for documentary film making. Contrary to the provisions of the law, it has come to our attention that some journalists went ahead and also engaged in documentary film making using the same press passes,” he said Wednesday.

This directive comes just days after CNN did a story about Kenyans in Rift Valley arming themselves ahead of the polls and later declined to withdraw it.

Eko Dydda Releases Yet Another Video

After giving “A For Apple” late last year, the Ghetto President Eko Dydda is back with yet another outstanding video. The new video is called You Are The Reason and Eko Dydda features two other talented artists.

A collabo with the gifted Churchill King and the delightful Imke Woeh, this song is a total dedication to God for his goodness and favour in our lives and everything we do.Though the song is somehow laid back, this is the only disparity in the distinctive Eko Dydda videos. He however sticks to his signature stammer/stagger style.

This great masterpiece was produced by Cream Vision films with G-Ganji on the audio. Take a look;
