Top East African Artistes Converge Today In Tribute to Westgate Victims

Citizen Radio’s Mzazi Willy M. Tuva who covered the Westgate Incident over the weekend brings together some of East Africa’s biggest artistes at his Wakilisha EA gig.

Wakilisha EA takes place every Tuesday at the Tribeka’s Beka Lounge (opposite Nation Centre) from 5.00 p.m.

The event, which is a platform for artistes to premiere their videos and mingle with their fans, takes a different turn today in light of the last few days’ events.

Today’s edition is themed ‘East Africa We Are One’ and will bring together local, Tanzanian and Ugandan representatives.

The event usually has surprise artistes who perform and this week will be no different with a top East African singer from Tanzanian in the house. Previous surprise artistes have included AY, Mwana FA and Hussein MAchozi among others.

Ugandan artistes will be represented by gospel artiste Ambassada with Jua Cali also confirming attendance. Attendees are encouraged to carry a Kenyan (or any East African) flag to the event and show solidarity with the victims and the affected.

Ambassada Organizes Top Kenyan Artists In A Show Of Solidarity With The Westgate Victims (PHOTO GALLERY)

Yesterday, Ambassada executed his plan to get top flight Kenyan artists to show solidarity with the victims of the cowardly Westgate terrorist attack and Kenyan artists responded and did so overwhelmingly. From Ambassada to Ringtone everyone came out and donated blood.

What started off as a rather low key affair at the Bata situated at Hilton, prayers were held (which i was asked to join) before the rest of the pack went on a trek to Uhuru Park on a mission to sensitize Kenyans on the urgent need for blood for the victims of the Westgate terrorism massacre.

Camp Mulla Team Up With Zambian Labelmates for This Awesome New Track! Check It Out Below

zone fam are a Zambian hiphop outfit signed to Taurus Music, the same record label that is home to kenyan hiphop group Camp Mulla and Tiri and they have decided to collaborate on a new musical offering for you and yours.

And what’s different in this undertaking is the fact that Kus ma raps in Kiswahili. To be honest, I never thought he could do it but he actually pulls it off.
the track is titled “Jus Ride” and features Tiri -kus ma’s girlfriend on the chorus. And she nails it managing to hold her own and stand out on a track that features more seasoned voices.

The track is a feel good jam that talks about having fun and has the Zambians rapping in their native intelligent tongue sounds mingled with English for the benefit of the greater audience.

The video features lasses in bikinis gyrating. And you already know that gets a thumbs up from me.

Nonini Salutes Robert Alai For All The Helpful Information He Has Given In Regards To The Westgate Massacre!

Robert Alai has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. He has been sued, beaten and once famously prayed for women residing in Kileleshwa to get raped but over the last couple of days, he has been doing Kenyans quite the service and none other than the Godfather of genge has taken notice and thanked him for disseminating information.

And Robert Alai has bravely done this inspite of the fact that there has been alot of resistance online with misguided Kenyans on Twitter asking for a media blackout of the entire tragic affair. But Robert Alai has been prudent and sagacious in the manner in which he has disseminated information and done so faster and more accurately than traditional media outlets which have been left panting in an attempt to keep up with him.

And Nonini has saluted him even issuing a statement on the same:

Mtu mwingine amekua akisaidia in his own unique way ni one & only Robert Alai. (Massive Shout Out)

He has been feeding Kenyans with information about the Westgate Siege endlessly from Sato! I Wonder when he gets his sleep plus his sources? Is he on the ground while tweeting etc? Whats the latest happenings? etc

He claims the siege is not yet over!

For his latest musical offering, he has teamed up with a popular Dutch group called Chef special and he features on their track titled “We Are One” which is a celebration of our diversities and different cultures.

Maina Kageni Vows To Return To Westgate

Everyone it seems is terrified to death by what transpired at Westgate the last couple of days and with good reason. Never before has terrorism become so personal for many Kenyans. Never before have cowardly scum targeted Kenyans and refused top respect the laws of yore that women and children are off bounds. The scum that attacked Westgate were killing indiscriminately; women and children aswell.

But Maina Kageni has said that he is not going to let the scum behind the Westgate bloodbath win. He is not going to be cowed by murderous vermin. he is going to continue to live his life. Infact, he will return to Westgate once it is re-opened to the public.

This is what his statement said:

Our condolences to the friends and family of the victims in the Westgate siege. God is with us. He is always watching us.

By the way, the moment Westgate Mall re-opens, I shall be the first to head there for a meal and do my my shopping. We shall not be cowered by these terrorists and their acts. The Kenyan spirit is strong! The Kenyan spirit is deep! The Kenyan spirit is remarkable.

Westgate Mall Terrorist Attack Acutely Affects Highly Hyped Events

In a sudden turn of events, event organizers of this year’s Oktoberfest 2013 announced that they had cancelled the third day and final leg (Sunday) of the beer festival due to the terrorist attack that took place at Westgate Mall.

The last day dubbed “Wind Down Sunday” was supposed to see Eric Wainaina, Kidum, Denise Gordon, Different Faces, Electrique DJ’s & The Beat Band Parade. Unfortunately that was never to be.

In the same breath, this year’s CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance has been postponed.

The organizers of the event through a statement said it would be inappropriate to hold the classic car show at a time when so many people are grieving in the aftermath of the Westgate Mall tragedy.

The statement added that “It would be totally inappropriate to hold the Concours at a time when so many people are grieving and it has been decided to postpone the event as a mark of respect.”

Concours has been allocated a new date set for November 17th 2013.

Caroline Mutoko To Kenyans:Do Not Let The Terrorists Win!

Caroline Mutoko is arguably one of the most meticulous and influential Kenyan media personalities of all time. With over 300,000 likes on her Facebook her influence just gets stronger. The Kiss 100 presenter takes this platform to encourage fellow Kenyans saying:

Scanning through the TV stations I’ve caught images of Kenyans go about their business. It feels good. We cannot agree to be terrorized. Terrorism is an effort to bring a nation to its knees. We cannot let the terrorists achieve the objective of frightening our nation to the point where we don’t conduct business, where our children don’t go to school, where people don’t shop, where we don’t walk freely in our own country, where we don’t live our lives.

That’s their intention. Don’t let them win. If we hide in our houses; if we cancel our events; if we don’t go to school; if we don’t do business; if we turn on each other, if we begin to nitpick at those doing their part to help – then the terrorists have won.

The Guy Behind “Ni Kama Ndrama Ni Kama Vindio” Fame Now Caught Up In The Westgate Attack!

A few months ago,Citizen TV unconsciously created a new celebrity who was dubbed Jose the ‘witnesser’ from Kasalaney(Kasarani) area.

He joined the likes of  Bonoko Deh as one of Kenyans most popular witnesses, you remember him from this phrase “”I witnessed ni kama ndrama ni kama vindio”

His clip about him recapping a robbery incidence in Kasarani then went viral and soon enough Kenyans were using the ‘Nikama Ndrama Ni Kama Video phrase’. Facebook pages were created,TV shows such as Heka Heka,Truthmeter and ChurchLil featured him,he was also hosted on  radio stations  and a celebrity was born
After going underground for a while he is back,as a witness,to the morbid siege at Westgate. This is what he said to K24 and KTN  “Me I just lan (run) away. Am waiting for my servant. Am very safety”.

Coast-based Radio Station shut down Following Al Shabaab Threats

As if the Westgate Mall attack is not enough, Somali-based militia group, Al Shabaab, has been issuing threats to a Mombasa-based radio station.

According to sources, Radio Salaam in Mombasa has closed down indefinitely following the terror threats. Though the station is still on air, only recorded programmes are being played. Allegedly the militia group had threatened to attack the TSS Tower-based radio station.

Blogger Robert Alai reports that Al-Shabaab believes that Radio Salaam is being used by NSIS to gather intelligence on terrorists hence the need to muzzle it.

Recently KTN aired an alleged investigative piece that claimed the station was intelligence ran.

On the other hand, the station has refuted the claims insisting it was upgrading its transmission;

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to our listeners and clients due to the upgrading of our transmission and studio equipment. We are now live on air to update on the current events…our engineers are working tirelessly to enable us resume normal programming.

Popular Female Musician Narrates How She Narrowly Escaped Death at Westgate Mall

Annette Kawira, an upcoming musician popular for her song Pole Pole alongside ‘Genge’ godfather, Nonini, is still shaken after coming face-to-face with the Westgate Mall attackers on Saturday morning.

The singer was at the upscale shopping mall’s Art Caffe when the attackers stormed in and randomly started shooting in all directions. Here’s Annete’s recollection;

Today was an ordinary day. I woke up got ready for work and left the house. Mum had just arrived from Tanzania and had presents for me. I told her I was late and I will look at the presents when I get back home. Kissed my baby bro and left the house for Westgate. My client Chris Wen was on time as always and we had a cafe Latte at Art Caffe. He left after we were done and I continued with my duties.

At around Midday the lights started flickering so when I heard the first shot, I thought it was the transformer. Next thing I see a man infront of me drop dead Then it hit me,things ARE BAD. Then the Blood birth began. The only thought I has was MY FAMILY.As I trembled in a store in Nakumatt MY MUM is all I thought about. As the air filled with gunshots I was thinking about what THEY would write on my obituary.

Unfortunately, Annette’s colleague was injured during the attack and underwent surgery on Sunday.

For now, she’s praying for the innocent people who are still held hostage in the ill-fated mall.

Storymoja Hay Festival Pays Tribute to Celebrated Ghanaian Poet Killed in Westgate Mall Attacks

The organizers of the Storymoja Hay Festival, Occupy Nairobi poets and friends of the literary community will host a tribute honoring the late Ghanaian poet and diplomat, Kofi Awoonor who was killed on Saturday during the terror attacks at Westgate Mall here in Nairobi.

Professor Awoonor was in Nairobi for the Storymoja Hay Festival and was slated to conduct workshops and readings.

“We are devastated by the loss of Professor Awoonor, but hope must prevail,” said Storymoja founder, Muthoni Garland, in announcing the tribute. “Although we miss him, we are stronger because during his life’s journey, he so generously shared his wisdom with us.”

The event, which will feature readings and remembrances by writers and artists will take place today 23rd Sept at the National Museum at 6:00 PM.  In attendance will be two of Ghana’s leading poets, Kwame Dawes and Nii Parkes who were to share a stage with Professor Awoonor.

“This is devastating news, but we are grateful for his mentorship, brilliance, and embrace,” said poet and publisher, Kwame Dawes, who was at Storymoja to help promote the publication of Awoonor’s new collection of poems.

Awoonor was Ghana’s representative to the United Nations under the presidency of Jerry Rawlings from 1990 to 1994. He was also president of the Council of State, an advisory body to the president, a post he left earlier this year.

He was most noted for his poetry inspired by the oral tradition of the Ewe people, to which he belonged. Much of his best work was published in Ghana’s immediate post-independence period, part of which he spent in exile after the first president and post-colonial icon Kwame Nkrumah, to whom Awoonor was close, was overthrown in a coup. His books included “Rediscovery and Other Poems”, published in 1964.

The announcement of Awoonor’s death has led to tributes from around the world including stories on the BBC, Al Jeezera, The Daily Telegraph, and the Wall Street Journal about the tragic circumstances of his death and his life.

In Ghana a statement was released by the President of the republic, John Dramani Mahama, who described the country as being in shock at the loss. “such a sad twist of fate,” he said. The announcement of his death led to an outpouring of grief in his home country.

Professor Awoonor served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the UN in the early 1990s and was ambassador to Brazil and Cuba in the 1980s.  He has held academic positions in Ghana and the US, and is renowned for his fiction and poetry.

In 2014′, the University of Nebraska Press and the African Poetry Book Fund will publish Awoonor’s Promise of Hope: New and Selected Work edited by fellow poet Kofi Anyidoho.

Storymoja expresses its regrets and condolences to Awoonor’s family, and is committed to find ways to honor the work and spirit of this great African author and intellectual.

Huddah Monroe Takes Water To Thirsty Rescuers And Policemen

Huddah Monroe is always in the headlines for all the wrong reasons and my colleague Sue Watiri just did an article about Hakeem doubling back to Cleo after allegedly having sex with Kenya’s BBA representative.

but earlier today, the Kenyan representative went out of her way to get water to the brave men attempting to bring an end to the carnage caused by the cowardly terrorists at Westgate. I think it’s pretty cool for the lass who has been largely ostracized for her eccentric nature to go out of her way to show support.

Jeremy Odhiambo better known as Saliva Vic describes himself as a “fun lover who at times writes verse, prose and broadcasts as well as the inventor of the epic tweet!” But in blogosphere, he’s infamous for his tweets that have put him at loggerheads with several Kenyans on Twitter.

That aside, today Saliva Vic has revealed his side that many not know of when he eulogized the deceased Radio Africa Group’s entertainment and radio host, Ruhila Adatia – Sood.

Here’s what The Riot host on Hits FM had to say about Ruhila;

I never met Ruhila Adatia Sood. I never met her in person but we were great friends on the social network. I remember the first time I met baby girl I was hosting Nonini’s 1Breakfast show & she tweeted me to tell me that she was listening & loved it. I then tuned in to East FM Breakfast to listen to her hosting Aleem’s show at the same damn time!

That was when my friendship with Ruhila began. We both had an admiration for each other’s work. I would listen to her when I was strung out, hang over & she was filling in for the breakfast crew. I would also tune in during my own show, The Riot, just to get my fix of Ruhila’s bubbly personality.

Yesterday my friendship with Ruhila ended. As I was self medicating kama kawa my ex told me that Ruhila had been shot by those Al Shabaab cowards at Westgate. I refused to believe this as I cried all the way home, only for my brother to confirm it. My biggest weakness has always been procrastination. I put things off then regret not doing them later.

Ruhila, I wanted to surprise you with pastries at your work to celebrate your forthcoming bundle of joy. I kept putting it off to sleep, smoke up, drink or just lounge. Now you’re gone. Tonight I’ll be dreaming of you & I will tell you what I should have when you were here.

Please give the people you love flowers while they can still smell them. Tell someone you love that you love them today.

Pamoja!!!

Ciku Muiruri Defies The Terrorists: You Have Failed!

A terrorist is a combatant who targets civilians rather than engage fellow combatants because by nature, civilian targets are considered “soft”. In essence, terrorists are cowards who thrive off of fearsome spectacles that compensate for their cowardly nature. The terrorist wins when you live your life in fear. Ciku Muiruri isn’t going to be cowed.

She has told the terrorists that they have failed. they suck at their jobs and all they have to do is to instill fear. Kenyans are not going to be cowed. And this is what she had to say:

  Ciku Muiruri
On the 23rd of the month when many Kenyans are broke as they wait for salos to check in, donations towards helping Westgate victims are well over Sh24 million (In one freaking day!). Units of blood collected are well over 2000.

See Mr and Miss Terrorist? Our light will burn so brightly, it will blind you… Coz there’s something inside so strong. We know that we can make it, though you’re doing us wrong, so wrong. You thought that our pride was gone, oh no, something inside so strong… #WeAreOne

Celebrated TV & Radio Host Willy M Tuva in His Younger Days (Photo)

Like the rest of us, celebrated TV and radio host, Willy M Tuva, fully enjoyed what his youthful years had to offer. And now as he goes through the photographs, he laughs and turns the page.

I just came across one such photo of Tuva chilling with his boys in the hood complete with a boombox probably playing an all-time classic hit. Here’s that;

Eulogizing Radio Africa Group’s Ruhila Adatia

Ruhila Adatia-Sood, a presenter for East FM and an entertainment host for Kiss TV, was one of the 68 people killed in the attack at Nairobi’s Westgate mall. But just who was Ruhila Adatia – Sood (or Ru as referred to by her colleagues)?

On her Twitter page, Ruhila Adatia-Sood described herself as a “food lover, thrill seeker and a bungee jump away from sanity.” “Always looking for my next meal,” she also says on her profile on the East FM website.

A fun-loving person, Ruhila is described on the East FM website as a “TV presenter by day and superhero in the evenings as I get you home in the traffic mess.”

She adds, with a twist of that familiar fun-loving person that she, “believes there’s not enough reality television. Farhan Akhtar (an Indian filmmaker, writer, singer TV host and actor) is my hubby, DiCaprio is my iceberg.”

A graduate of Rhodes University in Grahamstown in South Africa, she used to co-host The Rush on Metro East FM with Gupz Saund.

Ruhila was the wife of Ketan Sood, a senior acquisition and assistance specialist at the USAID mission in Nairobi.

“Ruhila was a popular radio and TV personality, who was known throughout Kenya for her passion, vibrancy, and gift for making people smile,” said Dr. Rajiv Shah, a USAID administrator, in a statement.

Ruhila married Ketan in January 2012 in what The Star on January 9 said was a three-day Swahili-themed wedding.

At the time of her death, she was 6-months pregnant with their first child.

A last born in a family of four girls, Ruhila was brought up with more than two parents with her elder sisters taking care of her and grooming her to become

In an interview published in The Star in September 2012, her three sisters, Pinky, Farah and Shina describe her as a go-getter since childhood with each calling her their ‘baby’. Born and brought up in Nairobi, they now reside in different parts of the world but their childhood memories bring back much nostalgia.

Said Farah Adatia Gomes: “Ruhila loved reading, listening to music and watching TV though she never really got to watch what she wanted as most of the time we used to bully her into watching and listening to what we wanted. She was charming and outgoing, always a leader.”

Citizen TV’s Reporter Breaks down after Brother is rescued from Westgate Mall (Photo)

Saturday afternoon as Westgate Mall came under siege from Al-Shabaab militia, local and international media houses alike camped outside the upscale mall to bring you up to speed with the latest from the attack.

One of the media houses present was Citizen TV which was aptly represented by its meticulous reporter, Jacque Maribe. While she put on a brave face to bring you up to date with the goings-on, deep inside she was a distraught lady as his brother was trapped inside the mall and even tweeted asking for prayers.

Anthony Maribe was one of the Kenyans held hostage in the mall but was luckily released. The politics and current affairs reporter could not hold back her tears when she finally received the news.

This Was The Event Ruhila Adatia Was At When She Met Her Untimely Death! (PHOTO GALLERY)

Ruhila Adatia was at a cook-off for young children when the gunmen that stormed Westgate to perpetrate their acts of sheer cowardice attacked. And from thence, nothing but chaos and fear have reigned.

But before all that, there was nothing but peace and calm. Fun and enjoyment as the children went about their business. Check out the pictures below to catch a glimpse of how peaceful and idyllic it all was:
