Over the weekend,one Cindy Kemunto,the reigning Queen of Beauty in Kisii,started a heated online conundrum after a photo of her clad in a tacky blue dress and some drab heels hit the Internet. Her makeup wasn’t any better and the guy who did her hair needed to close shop and foray into farming.
She stood there… In a bad photo with a bad smile and bad hair and bad shoes,looking every inch like a trapped chipmunk,not at all like a woman who had just trounced hundreds other girls to emerge with the coveted title ‘Miss World Kenya Kisii’.
The virulent online bile directed at her,obviously,was uncalled for but it was brutally honest as it was viscerally funny.
Cindy,her combatant online team on board,jumped onto the Twittesphere to validate the photo and also inundate the Internet with other less ugly photos of her in different poses and get-ups.
And even though the new photos she and her team were now flooding the Internet with looked dramatically better and way glossier than her ‘ugly blue dress photo’,the Twitterati didn’t let up… They pounded on. And on… Ridiculing her in proportions only left to the Kenyan Twitter users. And it was a good day,I must say. Though a dark,crude one.
But Cindy,Keryl Cindy on Facebook,is not the first young woman to come under fire for looking less than glamorous and yet ending up with a Beauty Pageant title. Many other young women have been there. Been ridiculed and been dragged before either on Twitter or Facebook or Weibo or whatever. And,just like Kemunto,they found a way to wiggle their way through the negativity and stand tall… Unscathed.
A few other poor girls have been there before. Called UGLY and everything… Here’s a QUICK LOOK….
1. Miss Kakamega – Idah Nakova
Around 2013,it was announced that Miss Nakova was the new Miss Tourism Kakamega County. Nakova,a Pwani University student,was then immediately met with a barrage of disgusting attacks for her looks… She was a demure-looking clean-shaven girl who looked more like a cat than a beauty queen. The attacks on her were so intense,so brutal she had to be rescued from an impending nervous breakdown by the likes of Larry Madowo and many other local organizations who stood up for her,gave her goodies and also a drastic makeover. We’ve never forgotten her though. Or the fact that she seriously wasn’t beautiful… As such.
2. Miss Uganda – Leah Kalanguka
What was interesting with this one was the fact that the attack was started by a respected Dancehall singer in her own Country – and also a woman – Cindy,real name Cinderella Sanyu. Cindy,famous for her song ‘Selector’,was among the first Ugandans to publicly call Leah Kalanguka ugly. Cindy was emphatic. And unapologetic. She wrote on Facebook,’Miss Uganda is ugly…Now I said it and it’s the truth…’ and it created a flood of relations on social media which also poured over to Kenya. Everyone agreed,Leah didn’t look very beautiful. But one thing was for sure,even though she wasn’t attractive,she HAD brains. And that’s what,at least to most of her ardent fans,mattered. Still, Cindy was,ummm,right?
3. Miss Zimbabwe – Emily Kachote
Miss Emily Kachote was controversially crowned Miss Zimbabwe after attempting to clinch the title back in 2012 and narrowly missing out. Indefatigable,Kachote vied for the title again and,this time,emerged the winner. But Zimbabweans weren’t so impressed. They immediately took to Social Media to express their displeasure with the results taunting Miss Kachote and calling her out rightly ugly. Kachote herself was unmoved,and conducted her business as usual paying very little attention to the haters online. Many social media users in Zimbabwe too came to her defense as well… In some cases,Kachote,25,was unfavorably compared to the much gorgeous Liesl Laurie,the then Miss South Africa. Things got so bad that even political parties were drawn to the kerfuffle with a spokesman for the Morgan Tsavangirai party coming to her defense.

4. Miss Taiwan – Hseih Yi Fang
This 24-year old found herself at the receiving end of the Taiwanese Netizens who decried her bestowal as The Miss Taiwan calling her ugly and undeserving. And if you look at her keenly,well even casually,you will agree that this girl was super ugly. Some comments were so mean that some Taiwanese netizens even went ahead and compared her to Taiwanese prostitutes who they claimed were more beautiful than her actually. Hseih Yi Fang wouldn’t be bothered,however and took all of the attacks in her stride,brushing it all away and achieving greater fame for that.

6. Miss Great Britain- Shelby Tribble
Model Shelby Tribble was crowned Miss Great Britain in November last year but was then subjected to a vicious online hate campaign.
Most notably the Czech celebrity website Extra.cz described her as “ugly” and used her as what they called “living proof” that “British women are not beautiful”. Are you fuckin kidding me? This woman here is NOT beautiful? Dear Lord.
But determined Shelby snubbed her haters by showing off the stunning features that impressed the judges by releasing the images from her latest photoshoot.
Shelby, 21, of Plymouth, Devon, said burst into tears after reading some of the hurtful comments and wanted to do the shoot as a way of fighting back.
She said: “I remember crying when I first read it (the Czech article) and it really annoyed me because one of the pictures they used wasn’t my best picture and got me at a bad angle.
“I didn’t even realise that they had put something up about it until I saw the Daily Mail do an article on it.
“It’s ridiculous because everybody has difference faces and there are bigger girls and smaller girls.
“Everyone is different shapes and sizes and what’s beautiful to one person might not be beautiful to another.”
In her short career, Shelby has won a series of beauty pageants – including Miss South West, Miss Hippodrome 2014, Miss Loaded 2014 and has been a Miss England finalist.
She said: “In these competitions it’s about being beautiful on the inside.
“I don’t really care about the comments – you know why you look at celebrities that everyone gets slagged off.
“I think some people would react differently but I’ve got a good family, boyfriend and friends who will all support me and would not let something like that affect me.”
Karen, Shelby’s mum, said: “We’re all so proud of her; it’s all starting to happen for her.
“We do miss her, and it’s really hard for her up there on her own, but it’s the right thing for her career.”
But seriously,HOW CALLED THIS WOMAN UGLY? Jeez! She’s a goddess! Looks better than all of the Miss Kenya winners from 1997! British people…crazy people.
