Artist To Watch Out: Jemedari
It is technically not proper to describe him as a new artist, given that he has been around the scene for some years familiar with those attending festivals from Storymoja to the BOGOF and he has been a monthly performer at the Alliance Francaise’s Open Mic event.
He also doesn’t have the nuances of the underground musician save for lack of airplay and sales. With only three videos out it is pretty fare to at least label him as someone to look out for, of that there is no doubt.
There is something beautiful about listening to rap in swahili or sheng’ with the flows and idioms, an aspect of freshness and authenticity, and when you find someone who can balance that with English rap more like Kantai in his hey day, then it is someone worth listening to. That’s Jemedari for you at first, sure he has only a couple of songs and three videos, but they are enough to give you his range of talent from lyrics to a strong individual flow. Whether he is in his social conscious element as in ‘letter to the president ‘ , in a bravado mode like ‘No competition’ or in expressing love as in ‘Msenangu’. I like the latter song with its sampling of the classic as well as the laid back joyful beats. There is every proof that he is one to watch just a little prolificacy in producing work is all that is needed. Sample the two videos here;
