P-Unit, DNA, Octopizzo Abbas, Alice Kamande And Others To Receive Massive Royalties.
Dunda is one of those words in Kenya that gets outgoing youngings excited, because it means having a good time. And what brings that feeling more than music?
It’s genesis I believe is from the word Mdundo, which denotes music that makes you want to dance and snap your fingers or stomp your feet. What am I on about? Mdundo.com. If you are observant, then you’ve probably seen these orange scratch cards bearing that brand name. They look like airtime scratch cards, only that they allow you to download music. A One hundred bob card allows you to download five songs of your choice from a particular artist.

Well Mdundo.com has decided it is time to pay up! Who doesn’t like the smell of new money especially one you’ve earned from the sweat of your brow. The press release boldly declares, ‘Local music artists are all set to start earning big from a technology based music distribution platform and online portal dubbed Mdundo.com. Recently developed online platform is geared at presenting an alternative channel for local artists to market and deliver their music to millions of mobile phone subscribers.”Remember AY’s words, “nanusa harufu ya ankara!” (I smell a cheque), I’m sure our artists can relate.

Mdundo.com CEO Gustav Ericsson said that thirty two artists are lined up, to receive their share of hundreds of thousands of shilling generated during the recent three-month pilot period for the portal. Mdundo.com, Ericsson disclosed, will be paying royalties to top local artists including: P-Unit, DNA, ABBAS, ERIC WAINAINA, ALICE KAMANDE, JULIANI and MBUVI among others for the songs downloaded in the past 5 months. I’m told the top artists earners this first time were Octopizzo, P-unit and DNA.
Frasha of P-Unit and Mdundo brand ambassador was clearly stoked by this new development. He’s quoted as saying,“I think that this is one of the most innovative ways of selling music, and making our music easily available to our fans. Above all it’s a good revenue stream for the artists.” I think it’s my time to do music.
