Should Kenyan Producers Try Doing Riddims?
There seems to be a huge demand for riddims nowadays. Radio presenters like G-Money and MC Fullstop have brought these things back in fashion. “What is a riddim?” you may ask.
A riddim is a brand of Jamaican music production where the producer makes one beat, and all the artists in his record label sing different songs over it. This creates a unique effect where you have many perspectives to a beat. Therefore a good riddim is never wasted by poor vocals. If you don’t like the way one person sang on the riddim, you can check how the other guy sang on it, and so on. Sometimes so many people sing well over the riddim that you spend an hour listening to it. The kids love them.
So I wonder, if there is such a big demand for riddims in Kenya, why aren’t Kenyan producers supplying the solution? The closest we’ve come to a riddim so far is the remix of Shavey and Slice’s first song, “Gal” which was done by Ulopa Ngoma. It came out pretty well if you ask me. What do you think guys?
