Something Big, Something Beautiful and Something Rewarding is Coming to You This February. Find Out What #AirtelDXD
Simple question; Have you ever wondered why Vera Sidika’s new breasts are round and bouncy and not square and stiff? Okay maybe not. And have you ever wondered why your phone is shaped the way it is, rectangular and not round? Or even why your favorite website Ghafla looks the way it is? I know these are many questions to ask on a Tuesday morning, more than the 21 Qs 50 cent once asked but trust me, I’m heading somewhere with this.
I want to explain to you why things are the way they are and it’s all courtesy of design. If you look at things critically, then you’ll come to realize just how vital design is in our world. Like who would have thought that a pose, a big derriere and an Instagram page would a land you a brand new range rover? Or that the number of likes on a Facebook status would be something I would pen down an article for? Looking over Nairobi’s cityscape it would be easy to conclude that there is no common design language that unites us. Whatever existed as colonial planning is being replaced by the city’s thirst for modernity and economic advancement.
I tend to think design speaks from the way we live and how we interact with our environment. And if you pay even more attention, you’ll notice that design is being used to disrupt old business models and rewrite new rules. I’m telling you the opportunities for designers are endless and Kenya is in the heart of it all and I’m talking technological, economical and even political advancement. Design is a booming industry which has the potential of becoming the basis of collective greatness and National pride and there is a new player in town more than willing to facilitate this, initiate and exploit this promising niche.
They believe that by recognising and highlighting disruptive designers, they’ll be able to bring the discussion of design, design thinking and solution based approaches to the fore with Kenyan public. These will in result spark more human centred and sustainable design led options for more people to access and implement.
So if you think you’re the best designer and you got what it takes to a make difference in the world, then you definitely have to pay attention to this. One of the biggest telecommunication companies in Kenya is organising a first of its kind competition which will be scouting for you and the rewards are simply mind boggling. Keep it Ghafla for more information.
