Oldest Student To Join Primary School, Kimani Maruge, Re-appears 5 Years After He Passed On

Kenya made headlines globally 11 years ago when a primary school in Eldoret enrolled the oldest student to receive primary education in the world, after the Kibaki regime made it free.

84-year old Kimani Maruge, later Stephen Kimani Maruge, entered the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest student to join primary school.

What followed was recognition globally for Kimani’s determination. Indeed as one philosopher said several years back, determination knows no barrier.

Kimani schooled in Eldoret but the 2007/2008 post-election violence threatened to derail and delay his determination, only to rejoin school after his property was looted in the skirmishes.

Kimani would later transfer to Nairobi where he enrolled in a school in Kariobangi where he studied until his demise on August 14, 2009 after succumbing to stomach cancer.

And today 12th January, 2015, Google has recognized Kimani for his contribution and determination in enhancing primary school education not just in Kenya but also globally.

In its Google doodle, the giant search company has used Kimani’s image in a bid to commemorate 11 years after Kimani first enrolled in primary school.

Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepage that is intended to celebrate holidays, events, achievements and people.
