This Why Raila Named His Son Fidel….
His choice of names was indeed a peculiar one as would observe one columnist: unlike his father before him who chose names of local heroes for his children, Raila Odinga had a more wider scope and chose to immortalize his hero, the cuban president Fidel Castro in someone dear to his heart, His First born son Fidel.
Raila was particularly impressed by his Cuban hero, Fidel who he felt had made a major contribution in the Vietnam war and the liberation that came soon after. The fight for political liberation back in the day was rife and would come in handy as Raila chose a political career in his school days in the 1960’s.
So when his son Fidel was born 3 years after his return to Kenya in 1970, Raila already had a name for him, He would call him Fidel, after his political Idol. That is how much Raila adored his politics back then, and decades later, he hasn’t lost the fire, he continues to soldier on, un-perturbed by the struggle that is the liberation of the masses.
