Kenya’s Top Cyclist (The Cyclist on The Sossi Advert ) Profiled on CNN International’s ‘African Voices’

Kenya’s most successful cyclist David Kinjah, who trained the 2013 Tour De France winner, Kenyan-born Briton Chris Froome, will be profiled this week on CNN International’s ‘African Voices.’

Kinjah, who has helped shine the spotlight on one of Kenya’s unexploited sports, tells CNN he uses his Safari Simbaz foundation to change the communities by developing young people into professional cyclists.

“Cycling in Kenya is still at grass roots, and Safari Simbaz was borne out of the realization of the huge potential in developing local talent,” he explains.

When Kinjah made the decision to start training the upcoming riders, he was introduced to young Kenyan born British cyclist Chris Froome who would go on to win bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games, and in 2013, he won the world’s most prestigious cycling competition, the Tour De France.

Although Froome’s success in the global cycling arena, and his association with Kinjah has earned Safari Simbaz great local and international admiration, Kinjah explains this process has not been without its challenges.

“We don’t have the proper funding, so we do it at our own village level and the future looks bright. In the future there will still be Kenyan runners beating the world, but also possibly Kenyan cyclists doing well on the world cycling stage,” he concludes.

David Kinjah is featured on ‘African Voices’ Friday 23 May at 10:30am, with replay broadcasts on Saturday 24 May at 17:30pm, Sunday 25 May at 11:00am and 8:30pm, and Monday 26 May at 12:30pm.

Tune in to CNN on DStv Channel 401.
