NTV Ordered To Introduce Sign Language
Nation Media Group’s premier TV station has been ordered by the High Court to include sign language in its programming. In her ruling, Lady Justice Cecilia Githua directed NTV to provide a sign language inset or sub-titles in all its news bulletin and all programmes of national importance by March 21.
According to the judge, NTV is a private entity but since it relays information to the public, it must abide by the laws that ensure that the public, including the disabled were not discriminated against. This ruling from the case file by Cradle, is also likely to affect other media houses should the disabled challenge their failure to comply with Section 39 of the Disabilities Act.
The Section imposes an express obligation on all persons in the position of NTV to provide access to the information that they impart in their television programmes.
