Nairobi Half Life Actor to Appear in Pulitzer Prize-winning Play

Nairobi Half Life actor, Mugambi Nthiga, will appear in the local production of the he famous Margaret Edson play, Wit. The production won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in the U.S. in 1999. Mugambi played Cedric in NHL.

The actor has previously appeared in numerous productions including MNet’s Changes, One More Vote for Obama and international blockbuster, Law Abiding Citizen (with Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler). Wit is brought to you by The Arts Canvas (Turubai za Fani).

The play is being staged locally to provide Kenyans with an opportunity to celebrate the life of national heroine, Prof. Wangari Maathai and to raise money for The Nairobi Hospice, which, for the last more than 20 years, has been providing support and comfort to people in the final stages of terminal illness.

Wit is scheduled to take place at Braeburn Theatre, Gitanga Road, from the 23rd to 28th October. The play uses flashbacks to trace the final eight months in the life of Dr. Vivian Bearing, whose life takes a turn when she is diagnosed with metastatic Stage IV ovarian cancer.

To celebrate 40 years in Kenyan theatre, The Arts Canvas’ Mũmbi Kaigwa takes on the lead role. She is joined by an uber-talented cast including Dan Chizi Aceda, Sam Psenjen, Njoki Ngumi, Fridah Muhindi, Sahil Gada, Wangui Thang’a, Musa Mwaruma.

The play is directed by Nyambura M. Waruingi, a Kenya-born-director, who returns to Nairobi after a successful career in film, theatre and multi-media production in Montreal, Canada.

Proceeds from the six performances will go towards outreach programmes at The Nairobi Hospice. Located within the Kenyatta National Hospital compound, the Nairobi Hospice cares for and supports patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses, especially cancer, HIV and AIDS.
