Check Out the Hilarious Pilot Episode of Kenya’s Version of Family Guy
Okay, okay, it looks a little bit like Family Guy but the pilot episode of Ill Home is funny as hell. From the usual Kenyan sensibilities to the dysfunctional family, this one will surely make you laugh.
When this show gets silly, it gets really silly. And that’s what I love about it. The writing is actually pretty good. That is evident in the ending, which is pretty ballsy. It ends on a high, when anyone else would have rode the wave and dragged it on for longer than it should have.
The pacing is right, it never seemed like it dragged at any point. The several storylines come together very well. I wish the bro’s bash and the mother’s fellowship thing were interwoven instead of taking place in isolation. There’s also one story that was not concluded. But in the end it is one of the best efforts I’ve ever seen by an independent producer.
Writing-wise, it is much better than a lot of whatever is on TV right now. Some of the visuals can improve, so can the sound. But I can see it working in its stodgy state and becoming its signature look. Kind of the way South Park has maintained its style. When the good parts are really good, people tend to overlook the not so good parts.
If you want to catch a tighter version of the same episode and maybe meet the maker, Alex Kirui, who wrote and animated it, check it out the Kenya International Film Festival where it will show. Schedules to be confirmed and communicated. Check out the full first episode of Ill Home below.
