Meet The Young Kenyan Born,London Based Woman Making Waves In The Literary World

 

“You are terrifying and strange and beautiful, Something not everyone knows how to love.” These are the words from the viral poem “For Women Who Are ‘Difficult’ To Love” written by Kenyan born,London raised Somali poet Warsan Shire .

Due to her bold nature and her beautiful and fearless way with words Warsan is making waves in the poetry world and making significant changes in the world such as her campaign against the dangers of FGM.

Her poems are based on a wide range of topics from travel to war to sex, to FGM and loss and have been featured in Magma, Wasafiri and the Salt Book of Younger Poets. In addition, the poems have been translated into a number of languages, such as Italian and Portuguese.

Due to how good her poems are, Warsan won the 2013 Brunel prize for African poetry and was even the first ever Young Poet Laureate for London.

Warsan is currently among the new crop of Kenyan born people making history outside Kenya such as Lupita Nyong’o, Malaika Firth and Edi Gathegi
