The Next Daniel Adongos? Meet The JKUAT Team Popularizing American Football In Kenya

Have you ever had those random days when random ideas flash through your mind? Well you aren’t alone. Through those random ideas curiosity and interest, The JKUAT ‘Sparrows’ American Football Club (SAFC)’ was founded, in September 2014.

The Sparrows American Football Club is based in Kenya, at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Main campus in Juja off the Thika Superhighway, approximately 30km from the capital Nairobi. The team comprising of ambitious and dedicated players was founded through collaboration between the University of Nairobi (UON) main campus being pioneers of the game and the JKUAT main campus. This was made possible by the tireless efforts of Mr. George Kishoyan (JKUAT) and Mr. Alwanga George (UON).

As of today, The Sparrows have played several matches winning the league and have had the privilege of participating in the campus Olympics where they also won, with the captains Ososi Siriba Felix and Mark Omondi Okello leading them to victory. Through their hard work, they have been able to learn new skills day by day, moving the semi-professional way.

Who knows some players might soon appear in the National Football League like Daniel Adongo of the Indianapolis colts (USA)!?

Speaking to Ghafla, one of the captains called Martin said “As one of the captains I’m really grateful to Coach Teddy Dunde for his effort and determination in helping us improve our skills and knowledge of football. We have good linemen, though not as big as NFL or college football players, fast and agile running backs and receivers who sometimes double up as defensive linemen, LB and CB respectively due to the limited number of players and equipment.

We haven’t been able to secure jerseys, enough shoulder pads, enough pants and helmets. We do borrow most of equipment from the University Of Nairobi and when we are playing them, we can’t play at our full strength due to this shortage.

We are seriously in need of assistance in any area ranging from securing equipment, sports scholarship opportunities or linking us with people who could assist in these areas will be highly appreciate.

We are determined in being the best in East-Africa and spreading this sport to the grass-roots. “
