Is Gay The New Black?

Being gay is forbidden in Africa .You can talk about being gay, condemn gays maybe but coming out of the closet is  a TOTAL NO-NO, , “Un-African” or a “White Man’s thing”.

Coming out is often frowned upon especially in Uganda where innocent gay people are being killed for being gay while gay foreigners are being deported.Gay people have also suffered sexual harassment from the opposite sex in a bid to turn them straight. Despite the raw, unadulterated hostility towards homosexuals, Kenyan celebrities are aiming to make a change and are now coming out and revealing their sexuality

A list to Z list celebrities are going the Hollywood way and we have seen two celebrities decide that 2014 is their last year in the closet.

One is renowned Kenyan Writer Binyavanga Wainaina and socialite who teetered into the spotlight thanks to being featured in one of Tujuane’s ratchet episodes, Angel Maggie.

The Kenyan writer came out through a forlorn open letter to his late mum. Part of the article read “Nobody, nobody, ever in my life has heard this. Never, mum. I did not trust you, mum. And. I. Pulled air hard and balled it down into my navel, and let it out slow and firm, clean and without bumps out of my mouth, loud and clear over a shoulder, into her ear.

“I am a homosexual, mum.”

This news has been received with positive reactions rather than the expected backlash from a conservative country and his name has been the topic of conversation for quite a while. His courage has even given people in the Kenyan entertainment scene and outside of the public eye the strength to be open about their sexuality. One of them is Angel Maggie.

For those who do not know Angel came out today and introduced her girlfriend Fancy Samantha.

Angel and Samantha

I personally commend these people for coming out. This is a courageous move considering 9 out of 10 people strongly condemn homosexuality. As much as I commend this people, it would be pretty sad for people to come out of the closet simply because being gay has suddenly become cool. Coming out of the closet as a publicity stunt is a mockery to all the gay people who have to stay in the closet for fear of retribution. It’s offensive to all those people who have died and have been persecuted for fighting for the Lesbian, Gay and Transgender cause. I am all up for people being gay, but do not do it just to gain attention. Do not do it simply because it has suddenly become cool. Being gay is not the new black
