Meet The Only Kenyan Who Applied For The Global ‘Best Job In The World’ Competition.

Yesterday I shared with you Haanee Khan’s bid to clinch the park ranger position, in the just concluded best job in the world competition. The lucky people get to move to Australia and he’s the only Kenyan who applied.

If you missed that story yesterday, read it here. I caught up with him via email and asked him a few questions. This was in a bid to ensure that you guys know who gets to represent us should he be selected. What is clear is that Haanee is quite accomplished. This guy is currently the legal counsel for our national carrier Kenya Airways. I also asked him for a few photographs that show the different facets that make up the man, and I must admit that he does lead an eventful life! the best part is that he does have a heart of gold, as is evident in the various charitable events and marathons that bear his thumbprint.

In his own words, Haanee makes it absolutely clear just how passionately in love he is, with nature and the enviroment. It has been a while since I’ve met a bloke who gets such ineffable joy from nature like he does. I for one love flora and fauna, from afar. I will not be caught dead playing with elephants!

Haanee Khan completed his Legal Practice Course (LPC) in the United Kingdom where he was attached to a commercial law firm for a year. He returned to Kenya and joined the law firm Coulson Harney,  where was a lawyer from January 2010 to Dec 2012. He successfully completed the Advocates Training Practice (ATP) course in Kenya and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. His qualifications: Bachelor of Sciences (BSc)(Hons) in Business Management with Law degree (UK), Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree (UK), Legal Practice Course (LPC) certificate (UK) & Advocates Training Practice (ATP) course (Kenya). The picture below was him running a marathon. He has run a couple of them in support of various charitable causes including cancer.

He reveals to me self effacingly, some of the other projects he has been involved in. “I’ve worked for various charities; I was the spokesperson for Afya Kenya Foundation. I’ve organised and promoted 3 very succesful events to raise funds to help facilitate medical care. These were in remote rural areas, where Kenyans could neither afford to travel to a hospital,  nor meet the cost of medication. The events were organised by me on a zero budget. I have also promoted the Amara Charitable Trust, helping raise funds to expand and improve a primary school in Lukenya. I’m invoved in numerous charity projects..” He pledged 15% of my salary towards conservation and protection of Elephants in Kenya, if selected as Park Ranger in Australia! His conservancy of choice is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

And see, he does barbecue too, he’s not all about books, work and jumbos.  Here’s more information about him, in his own words.

“Its funny, I saw the advert after my sister who lives in Sydney sent it to me, and told me to apply. I looked at previous vids from 2009 and thought, where can I find a motocross race bike. I used to race motorcycles and even represented Kenya back in 1999-2000 by the way – new fact lol. Other ‘props’ were an elephant, a cameraman and which trust/organisation supporting elephants could I get on board and within 2 weeks eveyrthing was in place, two shoots and done.

My father is a retired Colonel of the Kenyan army; he then retired to be principal of the Kenya Wildlife Tranining Institute for wait for it…rangers!! And I spent many weekends and school holidays as a young lad growing up at the KWS institute in Naivasha learning about wildlife, conservation etc and today I have acted for many NGO’s as a lawyer.” Good stuff!

Watch his application video here, remember the drill watch watch watch, share share share!
