‘Go Walk Alone!’ Boniface Mwangi Comes Up With A 2 Week 350 Km Walk From Kisumu To Nairobi And Kenyans are Hearing None of it
Boniface Mwangi is a man of several achievements and quite an indefatigable figure. However, there are quite a number of times he surprises even the neutrals.
Latest case in point is his planned two week walk from Kisumu to Nairobi. Boniface Mwangi took to FaceBook to post the following invitation
“I would like to invite you to walk with me for 350 kilometres next month.
Ni Yetu Walk will be a 2-week walk, from Kisumu to Nairobi, to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the promulgation of the Kenyan Constitution. We shall invite artists from each of the 47 Kenyan counties to participate in the walk.
Ni Yetu means, “it’s ours” in Swahili: our country, our constitution, our land, our future. The purpose of this walk is to instill a sense of ownership and identity in Kenyan youth. It’s a rallying call for patriotic citizens to stand up and take ownership. Interested to join us? Email us at niyetuke@gmail.com
We shall divide the walk into sections and you can join us in the stages that fit your schedule. You can also cycle the entire route.
If your schedule does not allow you to join us, you can still participate by sponsoring someone to take part in the 14 days walk at only Ksh 25,000/-, all-inclusive. The walk will be flagged off from Kisumu on 7th August and we plan to arrive in Nairobi on 21st August.
The caravan of musicians, dancers, graffiti artists, painters, photographers, film makers, etc., will make stops at various towns along the way, including Awasi, Kericho, Nakuru and Naivasha, where they will put on a variety of small performances and discussion forums for community members. Upon arrival in Nairobi, the artists will perform in the Hii Chapta Ni Yetu concert on August 27th at Alliance Francaise.”
As usual Kenyans were of differing views but this times with good cause. First of all, for Kenyans whether employed or not, sparing two weeks out the blues is just an impossible task. Secondly, the fee required 25k just does not add up. Thirdly, not so many people are happy with the new constitution even if the problem is with those who are implementing it. There are so many ideas Boniface Mwangi and his fellow organizers could have come up with that does not involve a 350km walk coming at the cost of 25,000/- this is just placing a price on people’s will to support a cause. Many of this view expressed their opinions in less flattering ways including:
Mbongo Mbongotx we walks everday from mukuru kwa ruben to town have you ever heard us complaing that we need fee or invite you to join us we dont even bragg how many kilometers we cover daily?chukua msalaba wako
Gaddafi Were If its a walk, 25k ni ya nini? Ama ni fare ya kutembea? Aki Mwangi wewe….Mwaaaaangi???????
