Africa’s Pop Diva Victoria Kimani Joins A Worthy Cause
Thanks to primitive beliefs such as you can get wealth and good luck by brewing a potion made from the body parts of albinos, the people who lack melanin live in fear.
Fear that someone will walk into their house, kidnap them then murder them mercilessly in a bid to make a quick buck. Body parts such as hair, limbs and blood are said to be the ‘valuable’ parts of an albino. This has resulted to some people engaging in a grisly trade, that of killing and peddling body parts to witchdoctors and others that believe in the occult. The crime is so unbridled that albinos have to be buried in a grave sealed with cement in a bid to put a stop to grave robbers.
As of December 2014, more than 70 albinos were slaughtered between 2011 and 2014 in Tanzania, and in 2008 within a period of 5 months, 25 people with albinism were murdered in cold blood. (Source BBC)
Despite the government’s efforts to stamp out the ghastly custom, it is still rampant especially in disadvantaged areas. And that is why Victoria Kimani joins many others in a bid to protect albinos from extinction.
