Dear Teacher Wanjiku,You Need To Evolve To Survive

On Friday, Teacher Wanjiku’s show finally premiered on Citizen. Unfortunately after flying out of Churchill’s show nest, the good Teacher did not land on her feet and her show was just a huge miss. This was in contrast to fellow comedian Kansiime Anne’s show Don’t Mess with Kansiime that was a huge Hit.

To be honest Tr Wanjiku’s show was a huge miss because Kenyans have grown out of ‘accent jokes’ and the classroom scenario. Those scenes have been overplayed over and over again… In fact the show reminded me of Tahidi High blended with popular British Comedy Mind Your Language except that in Tr Wanjiku’s situation, it was the teacher whose language was a flop. The idea was not original at all…

In my belief Kenyan’s attention is very fleeting, what worked in 2012 might not work in 2014 that is the business that is showbiz, evolve with the times. Know what your audience wants, from my observation, Kenyans are now feeling situational humor as opposed to ‘accent humor’.

A while back having a serious presenter alongside a comedian was a super hot idea for a breakfast show, everyone was doing it and Kenyans loved it .It worked for a while then Kenyans got bored and Kenyan’s were looking for another morphine, only Maina and King’angi’s show survived the cut and that is because King’angi is witty and his jokes are actually funny, they don’t need an accent .

Remember how Redykulas got us laughing with hyperbolic impressions of public figures and their costumes?

The Redykulas Crew

Well a show in KTN tried that and it was just a heartbreaking miserable scenario. Kenyans have grown out of that. The same with Kajairo, we loved his renditions of famous songs but now it’s no longer funny.

In my opinion, Teacher Wanjiku should evolve to survive. And even Lizz Njaga talented actress had this to say regarding Teacher Wanjiku’s show

The thing about accent humor is it gets old after a while.. I think we got to ‘a while’ 12 months ago. Teacher Wanjiku needs to evolve to survive.. I hope her show has more in store for us than accent jokes. She def has talent. She just needs to get more material.
