First It was Ababu Namwamba, Mike Sonko and PLO Lumumba, Now This Kisumu MCA Donates to Teachers’ Kitty

The Nationwide teachers’ strike that has paralyzed public learning institutions since schools opened has continued to bring the best and worst out of leaders in the country. While the government, some religious leaders and other leaders continue to lose goodwill, there are others who seem to have read the mood right and are backing it up with tangible actions.

Ababu Namwamba and Sonko have all said they will file motions in their respective houses of parliament that will see members of the Legislature and Executive get a 50% pay cut in order to avail funds to pay the teachers. Ababu has already files his motion. Prof PLO Lumumba has started an initiative the ‘Adopt A Teacher Fund’ seeking to have members of the public, government and corporate bodies to contribute to the fund and raise cash for teachers given the government seeming inability to rise to the occasion. To start the kitty off, he contributed 50,000/. 

Following these gestures is an MCA from Kisumu who without much fanfare or waiting for some bill wrote to the clerk of the Kisumu County Assembly requesting to have 35% of his salary cut off and donated to the teachers’ kitty and urged other leaders to follow suit in order to get children back to school. Really all leaders need to take the example set. Here is that letter,
