From Doing Odd Jobs In Industrial Area To Being A Billionaire. Meet Man Who Built The Third Largest Mobile Money Transfer Service in Kenya

Some stories when said sound like a fairy tale. But Duncan Oduor Otieno’s story is real. He is the billionaire who rose from a humble beginning to build a multi-billion shillings empire.

Duncan is the CEO of MobiKash; a mobile money Transfer service that works across all networks, participating banks and all biller merchants.

But before the flourishing entrepreneur started living life on the fast lane, he used to struggle to make ends meet just like typical Kenyan hustlers.

He came to Nairobi in 1996 to look for a good life. As usual, he was slapped with the bitter reality of the city; unemployment.

Jobs were hard to come by and soon Duncan was forced to scavenge for odd jobs in industrial area. He was lucky to land a job where he was being paid 82 shillings.

The struggling village boy in the big city opted to do farming to supplement his income. He was staying where Weston hotel is currently built.

From his savings, Duncan enrolled himself at Kenyan Collage of Accountancy (KCA) to do CPA. He proceeded to Catholic University for BCOM Finance before ending up in Nairobi University for MBA Finance.

Duncan worked for Post Bank and other banks before starting MobiKash in 2006. Currently, Mobikash has over 1.6 million customers and over 11,000 agents throughout the country.

It is also the third largest mobile money vendor in Kenya worth over a billion shillings.

Even with MobiKash still expanding, the young billionaire plans to retire in two years’ time.
