Help This Kenyan Win The Park Ranger Position In The Best Job In The World Competition!
The first time I heard about this competition, there was a Kenyan who represented us but his name escaped me by the time I was publishing this piece. Thanks to Arjun Juna Vidyarthi and Paul Zibarras, I learned that he’s Kiran Jethwa. He used to be the breakfast presenter on Xfm, and now he is the owner of Sevens Restaurant at ABC and Village Market.

The competition is back and Haanee Khan wants to try his luck! I was tweeted his video by the beautiful Alisha Popat so I just had to check it out. Haanee has two degrees, one in law and one in Marketing. A lawyer with a love for nature! He has been a ranger practically all his life. His application video was shot by Feisal Malik, and he has vowed to donate a whooping 15% of his salary to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust if successful. He applied for the position of Park ranger. Park ranger duties include protecting and promoting Queensland’s native plants and animals, along with patrolling the beaches and ‘checking the water temperature’.

Check out this photograph by him.

The rest of the details are courtesy of an article by The Daily Mail. This competition was first launched in 2009, and has now been revived. Briton Ben Southall beat over 34,000 applicants from over 200 countries to win the dream job. After winning Tourism Australia’s competition in 2009, Mr Southall stayed in five-star resorts and enjoyed jet skiing and diving on Australia’s stunning Hamilton Island. Mr Southall also had a brush with death soon after he started the role, after he was stung by a poisonous jellyfish during a post-Christmas jet ski session. He did a six-part show for National Geographic, where he retraced the route taken by James Cook more than 240 years ago.

This year, six jobs were on offer. With six jobs available the number of applicants has nearly quadrupled for the unusual roles. More than 130,000 people applied for one of Tourism Australia’s six ‘Best Jobs in the World’, within 72 hours of recruitment opening. This competition is courtesy of the Working Holiday Visa Maker Programme to young people from around the world. The six jobs on offer were park ranger in Queensland, a taste master in Western Australia, a wildlife caretaker on Kangaroo Island, a chief funster in Sydney, a lifestyle photographer in Melbourne and an outback adventurer in the Northern Territory.

According to The Daily Mail, Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said: ‘We’ve taken one of the most successful tourism campaigns in recent times – ‘Best Job in the World’ – and made it bigger and better by coming up with a competition which represents our breathtaking landscapes, our unique wildlife, great food and wine and, of course, our huge sense of fun.’

Applications for the competition began on March 4. Candidates were to complete an online application form at www.facebook.com/australianworkingholiday or www.australia.com/bestjobs. To apply candidates had to submit a 30-second video explaining why they are right for the role. The closing date was yesterday April 10, and the successful applicants will be expected to take up their positions on August 1, sharing their experiences with regular blogs and social media updates.
