Here Are Some Amazing Stuff You Never Knew About Mimmo

Singer/songwriter/art director Mimmo is one of the fast-rising singers in this industry. A Kisima Award winner, Mimmo is an independent artiste working with renowned music producers like Musyoka (Decimal Records) R-Kay, Ulopa Ngoma, Ogopa Deejays and Homeboyz.

While you may know that about her, there’s pretty much you may not know about her. In doubt? Take a look;

  • ·         Mimmo’s family is very artistic/musical; Her mom and dad met at a guitar shop in Nairobi’s CBD and they still have that guitar to date.
  • ·         Mimmo’s late mom Wanjuhi Kamau (She died of cancer 2 years ago) used to play the harmonica and recorded a couple of songs back in the early 70’s.  She also used to be the voice behind those English programs aired by the Kenya Institute of Education (KIE) back in the day, to primary schools across the country.
  • ·         Mimmo’s estranged father Nderitu Munene used to play the guitar in a band led by renowned Kikuyu musician Kamaru.  He was also a songwriter for the band.
  • ·         Mimmo’s elder brother Munene who’s a sketch artist plays the guitar.

  • ·         Mimmo’s eldest sister Anne, a doctor currently based in the USA can belt out a remarkable alto, while her younger brother Alfie who teaches music at Braeburn plays the violin and the guitar.  He was also a member of the musical group Jipya that gave us songs like ‘Santa Lucia’ and also featured in Collo’s Msichana high class.  The group has since broken up, with Gaza who featured in Ukoo flani’s Mizani track, being the only member concentrating on churning out new music.
  • ·         Their last born brother Wangai a lawyer by profession plays the keyboard and sings bass in the Nairobi chapel worship team.
  • ·         Mimmo is related to Julie Wang’ombe, who wrote President Uhuru Kenyatta’s acceptance speech. Mimmo’s father and NMG Managing Director Linus Gitahi are first cousins.
  • ·         Mimmo is the voice behind the coke “Open Happiness” advert recorded late last year… (Shake your hands, laugh a little louder…twist a little harder blab la)  She has also recorded numerous jingles like Hass gas, Zawadi 2929 among others.

  • ·         Mimmo was top 15 in the country, in the Coca cola Popstars that gave birth to the now broken up Sema group consisting of Sanaipei Tande, Pam and Kevin.  She auditioned at the Coast where she was living at the time, and was among 3 finalists chosen from the Coastal region. The other 12 were all from Nairobi.
  • ·         Mimmo is obsessed with even numbers i.e. She has to stir her coffee/tea for 22 times, not more not less and if she gets distracted, she will start all over again! Lol!  Her radio/tv volume also has to be on an even number!!
  • ·         Mimmo enjoys washing dishes, she calls it an art!!!
