Here Is The Heart-breaking Account Of The Woman Who Was Stripped At Kayole.
I watched the NTV recap of what happened to the woman who was stripped at Kayole, it broke my heart, my heart went out to all the women who get harassed in the streets as they toil and trudge to put food to the table for their families.
Wambui,a mother of two lives in Kayole, where she hawks eggs around mihango stage in a bid to eke out a living,Sometimes she walks 30 kilometres trying to make a living that has proved elusive. She lives in a 10 by ten single room that she has rented with her sister On this fateful day, shw was doing her usual rounds hwaking her boiled eggs when she ran into Muiruri,a dirty, puny excuse of a man that would make her life a living hell,
The man requested her to make him 3 eggs with Kachumbari, she complied, Wambui stood by waiting patiently waiting for her dues, 60 shillings.Little did she know that the man she had served would be the reason why she would be admitted in a half-dead state at Mama Lucy hospital. After eating and belching out loudly,Muiruri decided that he was not going to pay the agreed amount. He stood there laughing and enjoying his supposed trickery on the innocent mother of 2.
When Wambui demanded for her right, Muiruri got abusive, he called her prostitute, telling her that he would not pay her and would in fact be taking her to bed by the end of the day, hurt at the insult, the mother of two insisted that she had to get her money, Sensing a melee, Muiruri started screaming calling Wambui all manners of of names while asking the men who were there to help him strip the woman, the irate mob happy to unclothe a woman for whatever reasons descended upon her like a plague, they beat her up, stole her phone and her only means of making a living, Her precious boiled eggs.
Her sister who happened to be close by came to her rescue, only to face the same treatment. Wambui was badly battered and bruised, she had to be rushed to Mama Lucy unconscious. She has since been released. There were even allegations that she had died from the bad blow to her head.
The concussion she suffered will heal eventually with time, the scars in her heart wont, the agony that she went through will forever hang around her life like a cloud, a sad reminder that a woman has no place in a male dominated society.
It was fun and play when some of us donned dresses and took to the streets to protest against gender-based violence, some of us were called gay and accused of attention whoring, this has however blown out proportion, what was once a harmless mini-skirt debate has morphed into into a catastrophe, women are no longer safe, they have become victims of assault, being treated like rag dolls by men who act as the moral police.
This needs to stop. Women need to be respected. Not by what they decide to wear but by the virtue that they are human beings too.
Wambui is a Mother for heavens sake! The authorities need to take action against these offenders too. This has gone too far!
