Hope FM Explains Why Islamic Prayers Were Heard On Its Frequencies
On Tuesday evening, Kenyans were dismayed by Islamic prayers taking the airwaves controlled and used by Hope FM, a Christian radio station based in Nairobi.
Word went round quickly that the radio station had been hijacked as foreign languages could be heard on its frequencies.
However, as the rumour spread quickly yesterday, the Communication Authority of Kenya came out and explained what had happened to the radio station.
And now the radio station’s management has spoken out about the developments that led to the confusion.
The Hope FM management has quashed the rumour that the radio station had been hijacked and said that they were doing some technical maintenance which led to the hitch.
“We confirm that the Hope FM signal was last night interfered with by a foreign signal. This happened as Hope FM was conducting routine maintenance during which there was a technical hitch at the Limuru transmission site”.
It can be remembered that Hope FM was attacked in 2006 when unknown people hurled a petrol bomb towards its offices in Nairobi. This perhaps explains why there was panic once again when the hitch occurred.
“We take this opportunity to thank you for your overwhelming concern following the interference with our signals on Tuesday night. We assure you that all is being done to ensure we get to the bottom of the matter.”
