How is Our Music Influenced?
Much as there are speculations that the local music industry is experiencing overwhelming influence from the western culture, the local artistes are proving this to be wrong each day.
When you consider the authentic sub- genres that are being invented nowadays and the groupings that the artistes are aligning themselves to, you will definitely realize that the local industry is evolving in a direction that is totally independent of western influence. For instance, in East Africa, sub- genres such as ‘genge’, and ‘kapuka’ to name just a few from Kenya and the popular ‘bongo flavor’ from Tanzania reflect the creativity of the local artistes fused with the rich cultural heritage of the region.
There is however the undeniable fact that the local music industry has borrowed essential aspects from the famed western hip-hop and rap music. These aspects are rather more of material than content-wise such as the clothing fashion.
