How to Succeed As a Musician. Sagely advice from One of Kenya’s Top DJs
The Kenyan music industry has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the years but we are yet to roll with the big dogs.
A few artistes blame the DJs for the dismal performance of artistes in the music industry claiming that most DJs do not grant them favorable airplay.
Mike the DJ of Royal media however thinks differently, this is what he said
“I was just chatting with a local artiste complaining about the unfavorable airplay he gets from the Kenyan Media. My humble advice, just invest in time, do your research and get to know it’s a high time you crossed over to the music business and leave the music industry. Don’t rely on main stream media, we also have community radios that can still push you to the public easily and frequently…who tells you someone in Kasipul Kabondo doesn’t treasure you as a good artiste? You have denied him/her that chance because he can’t easily find your music anywhere at the end u end up losing that one fan
Get toil actually meet your fans do not rely on their likes and follows…artistes like Suzana Owiyo are seldom played back here but they enjoy a better lifestyle than some of the ones the media puts on rotation.
Have a proper profile that sells you as a brand and please stop doing music as a ‘by the way’ because music is a full time job just like medicine, aviation.
The fact that musicians from the West take their music seriously is the reason they have successful artistes such as Beyonce, Jay-Z and the likes.Hapa tunaifanya as a by the way then we end up not investing in our time well, hence the disappointments in the growth of our music..I stand to be corrected but all in all….take time to evaluate your career in music here in Kenya!!
By this I mean why would a local artiste charge 200bob entrance fee for a gig when Fally Ipupa charges 2k and the house is full?? He has invested in time to have his music well refined and the band members do a great job unlike here most of ours use stage performance tracks on CD And most fans don’t get value for their cash.it’s not too late to sit down and evaluate oneself..The media for a long time has promoted half baked talent to compete with more refined talents thus killing our own talent in the end.We as Kenyans can support each other very well.Think about it.
