Ian Mugoya Blasts Kenya’s Comedy; “Jokes Are Mostly Tribal”

For a while now we have been subjected to an endless stream of  tribal comedy .We have been treated to never ending jokes about Kikuyu’s love for money, jokes about laziness at the Coast, accent jokes and jokes on Kamba’s love for bright colors.

Don’t get me wrong, tribal jokes can be funny, even international comedians such as Trevor Noah and Russell Peters know that ethnic humor can be funny and employ them once in a while. But when the theme is overplayed the jokes slowly become fusty and that is what is happening to Kenyan comedy right now.

Tribal jokes are no longer that funny, witty humor, dirty jokes and situational humor might just be what your audience needs. This is a sentiment echoed by Ian Mugoya who thinks that the tribal humor card has been overplayed like Pharrell ‘ssong “Happy”. He reckons that Kenyan comedians lack content and keep recycling the same old jokes, and lack other aspects of humor such as double entendre and paraprosdokian. (I had to google that)

Find out more on what he has to say about Kenyan comedy in the clip below
