JAMMIN THURSDAYS: THE LAUNCH

I was quite adamant for two reasons as I headed to Westlands last Thursday evening. One. I had no idea where I was headed, as I had never been to the venue before… Two. It was my first one of a kind assignment for Ghafla, and by any standards we all fear the unknown.

Nevertheless, it all went down well…and like clockwork, as I headed to the Red and Black for Black Supremacy’s launch of ‘Jammin’ Thursdays’ last week, the 1st of March 2012. Rumour has it that the club got its name because of its location, right under Red Tape and Black Diamond…genius!

Arriving at the venue, I was pleasantly surprised to be ushered into a cavern-style corridor by a lush red carpet that dressed the granite floor upto some drawn black drapes, which I assumed was the entry to R&B (Red and Black). The bouncer and attendant were as accommodating as can be as they ushered me into the club.

The new premises has all the ingredients that make the clubbing experience memorable and comfortable: subtle yet dynamic lighting, a super DJ, first class and efficient service as well as a mature crowd just out to have fun! I spotted Simple Simon, the CEO of Supremacy Sounds across the room in the company of R&B’s proprietor.

Both of the guys were down-to-earth, welcoming me and even offering to throw a round. It was 9pm, and true to their nature, Nairobi ravers don’t start the weekday party till post 10pm, so the place was still sparsely filled. I didn’t mind though, I got a vantage point near the main bar and the DJ was in full swing with dancehall anthems.

Everything here is so new, the black, white and red leather seats, the beautiful and unique wine glasses and beer mugs, the fresh faces and beautiful people. It’s an experience that surely should not end.

The waitresses who served always had smiles on their faces, even though at one point the club was almost full to capacity…not the choking full but the kind that makes you appreciate the company and the good times.

‘Welcome to the launch of Supremacy Sound’s Jammin’ Thursday at Red and Black, this and every Thursday from 8.00pm’ the MC boomed, ‘there’ll be FREE shots for all the ladies in the house at midnight!’

Sure enough he got some squeals of satisfaction and excitement from the primmly dressed ladies in attendance. There happens to be a dedicated dancefloor at the interior, laced in marble and appropriate for all those who just can’t sit down to the beautiful reggae, ragga, dancehall and riddim tunes.

The only reason I couldn’t pull an all-nighter was the fact that I had work the following day, though I checked my watch and it was 2.00am! You don’t want to miss Jammin’ Thursday, it’s happening tonight all over again, from 8.00pm at the Red and Black Restaurant. Entry is FREE so there’s really no reason you should miss out…
