Kenyans Stepping It Up A Notch In Comedy

When it comes to slapstick humour, Kenya has really left alot to be desired. The jokes are usually in the mould of either tribal humour or buffoonery.

But these are the shows that for me have done their bit in ensuring Kenyans get a different kind of funny that is still slapstick yet doesn’t employ the dimwits brand of definition of the word humour.
“Naswa” the Citizen TV show has no script and very few actors if any. They merely use ordinary everyday Kenyans who are unaware of the situation they have been placed in. Granted, the concept is neither new nor original but they have succeeded in owning it and making it as Kenyan as David Rudisha.
The situations are often hilarious as they give an insight into Kenyan’s belief in witchcraft, our mistrust of strangers and our apathy to help out someone in need and it does this in a funny way.
XYZ is another comedy show but this one is a satirical piece that pokes fun at politicians, their alleged pet-peeves and the sometimes down-right dumb things they say and do.
And XYZ aren’t timid about going after our representatives in the August House. They pull no punches and issue no apologies which is a good show for Freedom of Speech. The cast in this case are a bunch of puppets that are life-size and resemble the who-is-who.
From Keff Joinange to a Martha Karua parody, a Mike Sonko parody et al. And these guys did their homework so everything is down to a T from the voices (or accents) to attitudes. The dialogue is superb but i would expect no less as i hear some of the best Kenyan minds came together to do the show.
