Kitu Sewer And 2 Other Underground Artists Who Should Drop The Tag And Take Their Place In The Industry

There are moments when taking a look through the local industry you feel in some way it has been unfair to some artists deserving a bigger indubitable place at the high table. However, there are times when you also feel some artists are just not either willing to make the step up, or not realizing their potential or simply approaching everything in a lackadaisical manner. That is the same feeling you get when think about the following artists;

  1. Kitu Sewer

If you haven’t heard about Kitu Sewer then both of you bear the blame for the situation. You for your ignorance and him for not actually dominating the scene as one of the leading hip hop artistes in the country. He is among the few Mau Mau artists still churning out music on what you would call a regular basis. A member of the Mashifta faction of the larger Ukoo Flani, his lyric ability and unforgettable voice set him apart than many hip hop artists and on a higher pedestal too. He is considered and deservedly so, a legend. Yet you somehow get the feeling he is yet to get the success (money, fame and influence) he can get. He has been on the scene long enough for the underground tag to be dropped and accepted and acclaimed and you only want him to step up and dominate.

  1. Virus

I had heard the ciphers and the songs mostly ones he featured in and he earned my respect. Yet seeing him freestyle on about anything and making sense was a whole different experience. Why can’t he just push a bit harder, he is better than many in the limelight and in a segment full of pretenders he surely can be a much welcomed relief. Yet he will be restricted to mix tapes, free styles and ciphers. He is past that, has the talent and ability and even in a selective industry, with the right drive and management he should be at the top.

  1. Nafsi Huru

It is actually confounding to know Nafsi Huru has two albums out. He has unintentionally styled himself as a festival or show artists and you are likely to hear and see him on Hip Hop Hook Up first before you get him on the airwaves or your screen. He is well established to even consider him underground but either he is satisfied with things as they are or things are not just working out for him. He can do with a different strategy.

There may be many views and reasons as to why these artists’ works are not on constant airplay and why they do not dominate shows and news…yet their stature means a bigger onus lies on their part and for the sake of their fans and more so the due they deserve, they should step up in their strategies to distribute their music.
