KRA Now Causing Keroche Breweries Tabitha Karanja Sleepless Nights Over 1 Billion Kshs

Keroche’s CEO and a woman of the people, Tabitha Karanja cannot seem to catch a break.

Just recently her brewery was almost raided by a bunch of wayward youths who were eager to destroy her company’s product and now KRA is now demanding about Sh1 billion in backdated duty. This is according to an article on businessdailyafrica.com

The Revenue authority claims that the brewery ought to have paid excise duty of Sh101.2 per liter on its Viena Ice Ready-to-Drink Vodka but did not comply. The brewers deny this claiming that this popular drink which comes from the dilution of Crescent Vodka should be taxed at the rate of Sh26.4 per liter.

“In a 500ml bottle of Viena Ice, you have 188ml Crescent Vodka attracting Sh13.2 excise duty and 312ml of water which should attract zero excise,” Tabitha Karanja said in a letter to KRA adding that “We dispute the fact that addition of water would generate an additional excise duty of Sh37.4. The computation by KRA would see the drink retail at Sh190 instead of the prevailing Sh90, automatically pushing it out of the market.”
