Larry Madowo Publicly Criticizes His Employer Over The Suspension of Nation Editor Denis Galava

Nation Newspaper has been under fire over the last few days for suspending one of their editors (Denis Galava) for publishing an editorial that was apparently very critical of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his administration.

Following the news, Kenyans have criticized this move and so Tom Mshindi from the Nation has come out to defend his organization and explain himself over the incident.

Tom wrote that “No editor was suspended for criticising President Uhuru Kenyatta. If we punished our journalists for criticising powerful people, you would never trust us the way you do. Indeed, even today, we continue to take critical but informed positions.

An editor has been asked to take some time off so that we can discuss how he handled an important and delicate assignment.” he explained

Larry has also joined in the ongoing discussion and has come out to express his dismay over the suspension of Denis Galava saying:

” I was dismayed and disappointed by the decision to suspend Daily Nation Special Projects Managing Editor Denis Galava for Saturday’s editorial critical of President Kenyatta and his administration. As a journalist at the Nation Media Group, I worried that it set a bad precedent and I said as much to Editor-In-Chief Tom Mshindi. To his credit, he has fleshed out the motivations for that decision in this piece. “Our editorial decisions are taken in the open and everyone is free and encouraged to challenge and contribute to them. That is why you will see the loudest critics of our own decisions are Nation journalists.”
