Meet Freedom Fighter’s Daughter Who Quit Working For The President To Hawk Condoms
Last night, Citizen TV aired a story that elicited mixed reactions on social media.
Meet 43 year old Ruth Nthenya Ngei, daughter of the late freedom fighter Paul Joseph Ngei, who quit her job in the Office of the President with one mission, risking it all, if only to ensure that people visiting various entertainment joints in Kenya’s capital Nairobi engage in safe sex.
As night falls in the city of Nairobi, the name Ruth a mother of 4 changes to Mama Flava,She prepares food for her last born before leaving her in the custody of the housemaid.Work begins at 8:30pm,where she sets the target for the night (no. of condoms to sell). She then commutes to Nairobi CBD straight from her home in Ngong, Kajiado County.
In what she calls survival for the fittest, her night job begins. Selling Condoms on the streets,in the clubs to the politicians,university students and even Commercial Sex Workers.Flavoured condoms sell fast and that why she’s referred to as Mama Flava.
“The whole idea is to see how many people you can change” says Ruth Ngei to Citizen TV’s Judy Kosgei.
In the long night of criss crossing the streets Mama Flava makes her sales of condoms which range between 150kshs to 300 per pack. By 4Am the name Mama Flava changes to Mama Hope,she visits to the supermarket before going back home to prepare breakfast.
Two months after the death of her father in 2004, she quit her well paying job and joined her friend who was a condom reseller. She then opted to do the business by herself. The mother of 4 girls and 2 grandson says she does not fear ridicule and even go as far as introducing herself in School Parents Meeting “I Sell Condoms” leaving many agape.
