Open Letter to Kenyan Artists
Yesterday we saw Habida hit out at top-flight American female hiphop rapper Nicki Minaj for what she depicts in her video ‘Freaks’. And surprisingly enough, most Kenyan artists (and African at large) try to ape that in their music videos; the skimpy dressing, the swag talk, you know?
However, artists are being dissuaded from parroting Western artists. Here’s an open letter to African artists from hip-hop rapper K-Nel;
African Artists Lemmie coach you; I have been warning artists back in Africa to stop being brainwashed by what they see on American urban music videos! You see a rapper with a big house, a bugatti in a video, butt naked women and all that shit and you wanna do the same? 1st of all that sh*t is leased, secondary majority of these cats are in HUGE DEBTS!!! Yes, they rapping about money money and all that flashing diamonds and Gold but they own none of that sh*t! Stop it. Be authentic! That’s why I mess with cats like Man Njoro!! I love his work simply because he is authentic; the videos and his music. This is the way the music industry in Kenya should be shaped. You know me, I spit facts and take it from me as a lesson. Then when I see Radio and TV stations buying that nonsense, I feel like puking! This garbage gotta stop.
To sum up my lecture today, better realise it’s “OUR TIME”. Don’t be brainwashed! Stand up for Africa in every aspect and reflect that in what you do. Stand up for Africa and show your pride. Reflect that in fashion, reflect that in music, reflect that in how you talk and walk. God has blessed us. Sounds like blasphemy when I say “we are the choosen one”. Stop that “Africa is the future” talk. It’s now, it’s today,the time has come. Y’all be blessed. HAKUNA MATATA.
Meanwhile, K-Nel will release the official Film soundtrack version of the MPigs movie this weekend. Be sure to catch it here when it drops.
