Publicity Stunts:When The Thirst For Fame Becomes Real

 Publicity stunts. Celebrities have used this for a long time as a way to garner fame, likes on facebook, acquire hits on you tube, and promote an album or an upcoming movie. A well-devised PR campaigns can take an aspiring celebrity from oblivion to stardom. A badly planned publicity stunt on the other hand can be as disastrous as a lorry plunging into the rift Valley.

In Kenya Socialites are notorious for having the most outrageous publicity stunts, some socialites have succeeded in becoming famous while others are sadly still nobodys.

The most common and easy way of gaining publicity is publishing saucy, nude photos. It has worked for Huddah but for others it has been nothing short of a train wreck for as soon as they released their nudes, someone hotter and better came up and they were soon forgotten.

One socialite let me not embarrass her so I will call her Socialite X. So socialite X after a brief disastrous date on a certain dating show decides,hey let me make hay while the sun shines. She decided maybe she should launch a music career, to debut her music she posted photos of he making out with her ‘cousin’. We were shocked and took notice but we soon forgot all about it . Nudes followed suit, but just like the lipstick lesbian-incest action, we forgot. Third, came a declaration that she was gay which was followed two days later by the usual “I’m not gay. The blogs are lying” The thirst for fame was clearly strong with this one.

These shenanigans made me wonder were the brief moment in the sun worth embarrassing yourself publicly.

Yes, publicity stunts have elevated the likes of our own Marilyn Monroe, Huddah Monroe into the spotlight, but for a publicity stunt to work it has to be well orchestrated and different. Nudes and twerking are so 2013!
