Qualifications Needed To Be A Socialite

So today, the Media Madness blog did a pretty viral article asking, “Are we raising the next generation of fame whores?” and then proceeded to admonish Huddah Monroe. This post deserves a response.

Everyone seems to be asking, “What is a socialite?”

Since Ghafla! is the home of socialites, allow me to define the term for you readers.

According to Urban Dictionary: a socialite is a rich, but unemployed person. Must be in constant contact with the media and other rich and unemployed people.

Funny, and close, but no cigar.

According to Wikipedia: A socialite is a term for a member of a social elite, or someone aspiring to be a member.

This, if you ask me, is the more accurate definition of a socialite. I would add that they are people who just seem to naturally draw the public’s attention with their shenanigans. The plain truth of the matter is that we now live in an “attention economy.” This means that in a world full of people trying to vie for your attention, businesses are always looking for new ways to showcase their products. As long as you can draw attention to yourself, you will probably be able to find an advertiser/media entity willing to use your fame as a platform to showcase their products. That is the pot of gold socialites are chasing when they do what they do.

As for what exactly makes a socialite, from my Ghafla! experience, these are the important criteria:

1. An outstanding physical feature

It’s no secret that an astonishing booty is what helped Vera Sidika shoot to fame. It also seems to have helped Kim Kardashian loads.

2. Hobnobbing with high society

Truth be told, you’re not going to be a very famous socialite if you’re seen at joints like F2 Jam Session and such. You have to be at exclusive celebrity events like the Circle.

3. A mysterious air

When people look at you, they shouldn’t see an open book. They should always be wondering how exactly you get things done. When Huddah appeared in a TV interview, one of the first things she was asked is how she makes her money, to which she replied with a coy answer.

4. Draws secret admiration

There is a secret wish by everyone to somehow get money and not do much work for it. This is actually the dream most socialites sell to their audience. Most of them seem to just be chilling out and partying, but they are rich beyond most of us. They are living the dream. Where can I sign up for that?

5. Not shy of controversy

This is where socialites seem to draw heat. From sextapes, to wet-tshirt photos, to removing panties in public, these ladies don’t give a damn what you think. A wise man once said,

“…what am I doing? What am I doing?

oh, yeah, that’s right, I’m doing me, I’m doing me,

I’m living life right now man and that’s what Imma do till it’s over

till it’s over, but it’s far from over…”
