Startimes MCSK Awards Review
I was at the 2013 Music Copyright Society of Kenya StarTimes Awards Gala night this past Saturday, and was a prestigious red carpet affair at the Safari Park Hotel.
The creme of the entertainment industry in the country were brought together to celebrate and fete the highest earning musicians, as far as royalties from the MCSK are concerned. Earlier, MCSK had announced that artistes would reap a total of about Kshs. 22 million in royalties which it had collected in the year ending June 2013.
Nonini, who’s had a phenomenal career throughout the decade, took home top honours on the night that saw fellow artiste Jaguar, collect the highest number of trophies. Other musicians who took home some kind of recognition included Eunice Njeri, Madtraxx, Collo, Camp Mulla, Alice Kamande, Marion Shako, and Sarah Kiarie.
Artistes who performed on the evening included rapper Octopizzo, Collo and Jaguar.
I also noticed that most of the celebrities around were imbibing a new drink called Mask Energy Drink. People had a lot of fun while taking it, and DJ Mo recommended to me the energy cola flavour. Quite the tasty thing, I must say.
Pay-TV StarTimes, the official sponsor, also unveiled the launch of a 24-hour Triple P, a channel that would be dedicated to promoting the music industry. Youth Enterprise Development Fund Chairman, Mr. Evans Gor Semelang’o promised to set aside Kshs.300 million for the Kenyan music industry that’s expected to grow in leaps and bounds thanks to emerging talent each day.
